16th March 1968
It's a first week on top for The Union Gap and the powerful vocals of Gary Puckett with the rather classic Young Girl, heading a classic top 5 and a brilliant obscure song from the first Nancy & Lee album on release this month - Sundown, Sundown is classic Lee Hazelwood, but just to show they can cover others songs, they also have the definitive version of Elusive Dreams enter at 24, the 1967 entry for Tammy Wynette & David Houston. So with 3 in the top 30, that puts Nancy's solo Lee Hazelwood song, 100 Years, into the shade at 66.
The Beatles are back with new song Lady Madonna, fab of course, but not quite as fab as every single since Eleanor Rigby started the classic run, while the B Side from George sneaks in at 70. Bobby Goldsboro's Honey is in at 13 - very much a marmite track this one, either touchingly sad, or nauseatingly cheesy, what with lush string arrangements, Bobby's emotional delivery and especially the lyrics. The song hit 2 in the UK again in 1975 around the time a classmate was killed in a motorbike accident, so I'm emotionally leaning towards the former as it deals with tragic early loss. It topped my chart that Spring.
Honeybus, a tuneful fave of the time, pops in with I Can't Let Maggie Go, Cliff's Congratulations (he was officially robbed!) Eurovision perennial enters, and Robert John debuts with a sweet soul number. Who he? He had a hit US cover of The Lion Sleeps Tonight in 1972 which I rather liked, his vocals tending towards the Frankie Valli-style, and best of all a UK hit (as well as a huge summer of 79 radio biggie while I was touring the South West USA) with the fab Sad Eyes. So 11 years of waiting for that UK hit...
Leonard Cohen gets another cheerful entry with his early classic, Suzanne, Solomon Burke avoids getting sued by the estate of the late Sam Cooke by virtue of the court case establishing copying a previous record's style meant getting done for royalties hadn't been set (see Blurred Lines/Got To Give It Up), The Bee Gees get an obscure new entry, Elvis has given up Returning To Sender and taken on the job of the US Male himself, while The Intruders get another early chart entry 6 years ahead of UK success.

18th March 2018
It's a 3rd week on top for Kendrick and SZA, still sounding great, as are the whole top 10, all of them lower than they deserve (bar one). Lissie gets her highest-ever peak of 2, and JT goes top 3 for a full 20 years of 'em. In at 5 it's the original B side to the new entry at 35 for the Pet Shop Boys - Paninaro was equally loved by me in 1986 as A side and chart-topper Suburbia, but I didnt allow B sides and album tracks in those to avoid swamping my charts with fave acts like Abba and Pet Shop Boys. These days, since Sheeran & the stupid streaming takeovers of the UK & US charts, I've said sod it, I'm doing the same - so as Please (one of 3 deluxe 80's album versions to chart last week) is back I'm recharting tracks I would have charted (but didn't). That means the banging 12" mix of Paninaro (Italian fashion movement) enters at 5, having peaked in the top 5 in the mid 90's in a belated inferior remake, and Suburbia is back again also in an 8 minute plus extended version. In The Night also enters (better known as The Clothes Show TV theme tune back in the day), while Two Divided By Zero climbs.
They aren't the only act taking over the charts though - Paloma Faith's chart-topper drops out, but two new ones enter giving her 4 tracks: Til I'm Done revives in my CD playlists, love the manic ending and her vocal, back up to 11 leapfrogging the top 20 combo with Sigala. Another duet, with Sia, and clearly a Sia OTT ballad for a Game or something, enters at 45 (not available to buy) as an advert track (I think) also enters at 64: Paloma's version of the fab Mama Cass 1969 hit of the Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill song. Kylie meanwhile keeps the dance yee-haws a-coming at jumps straight in at 8 for 2 top 10's in a row.
Big climbs for Years & Years, and Owl City, the latter getting a second top 30 hit, and Lykke Li covers the 1973 Jim Croce classic Time In A Bottle which topped my chart thanks to an X-Men movie sequence a couple or 3 years back. Kim Wilde's new album is out, and she grabs another chart entry out of it, Sade return for the first time in 7 years, and 34 years on from Your Love Is King jazzing up the charts, and the UK Eurovision song sneaks in as the Finland entry drops a bit at the top end of my chart. Expect that ratio to be repeated on the day...

18th March 1986
It's a first week on top for ELO's 13th and final chart-topper (barring recharting oldies), as it all turns a bit summer of 76 disco with The Real Thing and Tavares side by side, and the Pet Shop Boys get a second top 10 - the days when they would have topped my chart not yet arrived (I certainly love it enough to have a chart-topper out of Love Comes Quickly).
A big leap for The Mint Juleps, and the highest new entry is a Comic Relief single of Cliff covering his 50's topper for a bit of a laugh. Yes, back in those days he wasn't regarded as a joke, he joined in with the fun, helped by The Young Ones, which gives 'hippie" neil (aka actor Nigel Planer) a second top 20. Cliff extends his run to 18 years. Another actor, Aussie US soap star Rick Springfield, pops back to Celebrate Youth a few years after he'd wished he had Jessie's Girl.
Stevie Nicks gets a second top 30 in a row, Belouis Some a follow-up, and Supertramp arrive like a Cannonball bringing their 11-year-run of entries to a close, give or take. Another 50's song returns for Duane Eddy, assisting the Art Of Noise's cover of his superior original, the TV show theme Peter Gunn. That leaves Johnny Cash's daughter Roseanne to follow in her dad's footsteps, and Suzanne Vega, in debuting, while Talk Talk, The Pogues and Dee C. Lee add to their runs and Tom Waits grumbles in at the rear end.
In the oldies scene, I'm still into my Bubblegum TV heroes, bringing a bit of 1970 Sunshine, and the same years' Laura Nyro sweet gospel harmony cover from The Fifth Dimension - if ever a song needed covering and becoming a huge hit in the States it's that one in 2018 - and also a bit of Rock with a message, Free's best record Wishing Well, and boy oh boy do we need that message in 2018 as well.

9th march 1968
It's a 3rd slightly-Spanish/acoustic guitar riffed chart-topper as The Monkees final classic single tops my chart, Boyce & Hart's Valleri making it a 6th. Don Partridge one-man-bands it onto every TV show at the time, and it still sounds charming up to 8, Jimmy Ruffin and Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell both have some Motown climbing, along with The Four Tops cover of If I Were A Carpenter and Diana Ross & The Supremes under-rated Forever Came Today both entering.
Highest new entry is also another cover of a 1967 top 10 original - Andy Williams glorious cover of Frankie Valli's classic Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Not quite up to the brilliant campness of the U2 mash-up by the Pet Shop Boys, but up there. Cilla is back with a song written by Paul McCartney for her new TV show to kick of a variety show career. I wonder if that will be a success, hmmm.
In at 65, another childhood fave debuts, Ray Stevens was a bit of a hero with his novelty records and his straight country/gospel ballads - possibly the odd mix is why he's not critically-appreciated, Gitarzan is not necessarily going to get music critics excited - but he had 3 chart-topping singles in my of-the-time 70's charts. Unwind is a decent song written by Ray for his first serious album, and a minor US hit ahead of a run of bigger hits. The Paper Dolls enter with a MaCaulay/MacLeod song I loved at the time - sadly the girls missed out on the lined-up follow-up - Build Me Up Buttercup - owing to a studio recording mix-up. Oops!

11th March 2018
It's a second week on top for Kendrick Lamarr and SZA, a great movie song for the closing credits, leading a static top 4, all still sounding fab. The Partridge Family's 1970 album track and TV show performance finally makes my top 10, err, 47 years late - the episode featured around a Black urban area show for charity, so fits in nicely with a blockbuster black superhero movie. In 1971 (when I first saw the TV show) I was into DC comics with social conscience themes, like Teen Titans and many others. It was a time of optimism that things were changing.
Killer makes the top 10 for the 3rd time for Seal, all versions different, and The Fratellis make it a 4th top 10, while highest new entry is from a newish US singer called Beca who popped up on my twitter with her new mid-80's sounding track, We exchanged some messages, I bought it, and here it is in at 18, ironically ahead of the lead track from Pet Shop Boys first album - it's sort of late 80's Pet Shop Boys-sounding in some respects with the synth chords. The PSB's have 3 reissues with bonus tracks, giving me an opportunity to own them on CD as well as vinyl, charting in the UK top 75, and a chance to chart all those tracks that I excluded because I didnt let album tracks into my charts once I started buying Abba albums - or else the chart would have been Ed-Sheeran-ed to death.
Big climbs for LPX and Meghan Trainor, Years & Years return, Don McLean's classic 1972 UK chart-topper is back for the first time in 46 years as it re-enters the UK top 75 sales chart this week, giving me a perfect reason to let it have a decent chart run - I preferred American Pie at the time, and it was much better than I rated it at the time. Vincent isn't about me (my middle name), but is about Van Gogh. His great great nephew lives locally running a transport service: Vincent Van Hire. Maybe.
Others: Leona Lewis is back, Owl City is back, both after breaks, Rainbow Kitten Surprise is not as cuddly as it sounds at all, alt-rock pretty much, but good, and in at the bottom end it's Sting back with an assist from Shaggy. Some have commented on the Youtube video that they are surprised at the pairing, never saw that one coming, and the like. Being old, I'm more surprised it took this long for them to pair up: Sting had non-stop reggae-rock monsters for 3 years in The Police, almost 40 years ago, and by 1993 when Shaggy was huge, so was reggae huge again, including Sting having more reggae hits with reggae acts on loan. The new one's more gentle and less gutsy or poppy than the older ones, but nice to have them both back.

4th March 1986
It's a classic Hounds Of Love barking on top for Kate Bush, her 2nd chart-topper, and presiding over a frantic chart choc-a-bloc with goodies. Sigue Sigue Sputnik shoot it up to 2 from 26, all glammed up with synth riffs, and ELO call America at 4, 24 a 24-place climb for what is 14 years on from topping my chart with 10538 Overture, for around the 20th time making the top 5 - and the final time for 30 years, bar oldies. Billy Joel finally goes top 10 8 years late, Blow Monkeys climb to 13, and some great tracks are treading water due to the leapfrogging going on: Bangles, Mike + The Mechanics (it would top my chart in the 90's) and many more.
Highest new entry is Culture Club, at 18, with the pleasant Move Away. Looked like they were here for the long haul...errr sadly not, relationships are complex, and substance abuse worse. Pet Shop Boys get the highest climber 59 to 20, and have two tracks in the 40 for the first time. Not for the last time though. Pretty much a regular thing actually for the next 35 years, and then some. At least I banned album tracks, largely, in those days, or else the lads, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and a few select others would dominate the charts Ed Sheeran style.
In at 24, the title song from the movie Absolute Beginners, David Bowie back on critical form, and the best thing about the movie. sadly Bowie also decided he'd had enough of being great, and it was at best just good until the mid-90's an the Pet Shop Boys helped make him sound great again for a bit (hit singles-wise) after the Tin Machine career-killer. Whistle kept on buggin' me - in at 39 with a very familiar riff, oh yes it's the theme tune to 60's surreal sitcom Green Acres. Not only one of the greatest TV themes of all time, but the greatest sitcom of the 60's. Ask Matt Groening...
Grace Jones covers Roxy Music, Bryan Adams keeps the hits swiftly coming, The Stones are back covering Bob & Earl (not very well), and Shaky sneaks in with a song I have utterly forgotten. No idea.

2nd March 1968
It's a first week on top for Love, the great obscure classic Alone Again Or, better known by The Damned, and a track I didn't know till 30 years later, beating out classics galore. Dave Dee, Union Gap, Monkees, Tom Jones, Otis Redding, Nancy & Lee, Beatles (most of them), Moody Blues, Four Tops, Scott Walker, for example all topped my charts as oldies in later decades. Highest new entry, of only 3, the lowest since I started doing these retro 1967/8 charts - which gives me a break to let records try to reach a decent chart position as they deserve - is The Monkees yet again, straight in with Valleri, a terrific record, and the final hit that was well worth being a bigger hit than it was. Their previous single peaks at 50, it's a Nilsson Beatles-ish song (as Harry's tended to be at this time) and it's sweet - but it's not in the same league as Valleri.
Jimmy Ruffin's 1970 UK hit I'll Say Forever My Love, joins the club of 70's soul hits that were actually 1968 US hits, and a goodie it is too, nicely dramatic and stringstastic. Pet Clark leaps into the 30, as does Sandie Shaw more modestly into the 40, neither of them tracks I noticed particularly at the time. Tom Rush jumps nicely, and the final new entry is Bob Dylan, with a song I associate more with UB40 and Robert Palmer. It's actually quite restrained and tuneful, gasp!

4th March 2018
It's a first chart-topper for Kendrick Lamar and SZA as they leapfrog Kendrick's other Black Panther soundtrack hit with The Weeknd who has to be content with yet another number 2 peak. Lissie goes up to 3 with her 6th chart entry, beating the 6 peak of When I'm Alone in 2010, and Hailee Steinfeld gets a first top 10, and a 2nd top 20 in one fell swoop. Florida Georgia Line similarly get a first top 10 and almost get a second one in the same week.
Janelle Monae gets her 3rd top 10 in 6 years since she hit 2 with fun. but her first solo entry with the very Prince-inspired and highest-climbing Make Me Feel. Funktastic. The Fratellis get their 5th top 20 entry, the first for 11 years, while highest new entry has gone all Pete Tong - as he turns into a Killer with his 2nd top 40 classic dance cover, featuring Seal, who thus gets a 3rd version of the 1990 Adamski chart-topper into my charts. He got no credit for what is essentially his own song, sung by himself (how times have changed, these days you get a label credit for farting in the background accidentally). He did record his own hit version a few years later but it wasn't as good, though he did get another 2 chart-toppers himself alone in the 90's. Just to rub it in, his 1990 classic debut hit, Crazy, has been covered in a very different style by Think Up Anger, and renamed Mutiny. No idea why Crazy isn't the title.
New act Ria Mae is the highest new song, at 27, as Sigala and Paloma Faith both add to their list of top 40 tracks as Lullaby rockets into the 30. Alan Walker gets a 3rd top 40, Noah Cyrus a second, Imagine Dragons 4 out of 4 from the new album, and Rosemary Martins covers Donna Summer reggae-style spearheading a reggae-presence of 3 as UB40 also cover Stevie Wonder to get a 2nd in the chart. Or 2 UB20's (almost, 3 members at any rate) which adds up to UB40 pretty much, given the actual vocalist Ali is singing.
Meghan Trainor is back, ditto Marshmello, Anne-Marie, and Gary Numan - Gazza has been absent since 2002, so he now extends his chart career to 39 years since Are 'Friends' Electric topped my chart in the summer of '79. My Name Is Ruin is his best effort in a decade and a half.

25th February 1986 Back in at 1, it's a UK chart re-entry giving me an excuse to rechart 1985's greatest single, Tears For Fears' pop masterpiece wait 3 more months and you can chart it again with a one-word change. funny you should suggest that.... (I did chart Run - my charts are all of the time, not what I like now, though my tastes havent changed that much actually for the mid 80's, I find, and this thread is helping me get them all onto spreadsheets and out of notepads so I can one day have a full database 1968-the present day)

25th February 1986
Back in at 1, it's a UK chart re-entry giving me an excuse to rechart 1985's greatest single, Tears For Fears' pop masterpiece, giving an oldies theme to the upper chart as Eloise holds at 2, Billy Joel climbs to 11 and Huey Lewis' Back To The Future song hits a new peak belatedly. In at 5, it's 1976 top 10 disco classic Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, as it charts all over again. Tavares were early cool disco stars. Yes, disco was cool at it's best.
Mike + The Mechanics give Mike Rutherford his 4th top 10 (3 with Genesis), and Paul Carrack his first, in 12 years of trying, while Russ Ballard makes it for the first time in 13 years - when Argent took God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To Me a bit higher. The Blow Monkeys have a massive climb, as I am Digging their Scene, and ditto Sigue Sigue Sputnik who shoot like a missile into the 30 as well, while the highest actual new record is ELO having a go at synths with the fab Calling America - their last hit, far too minor, and the end of the road essentially for the band as a unit. Jeff Lynne of course kept on having success in various guises until resurrecting the name recently - and cue more hits in my charts.
Depeche Mode are stripped back, Frankie is still doing it his way 17 years on from his first chart entry with My Way - though his best songs predated my charts and would have been big. Audrey Hall has a gentle reggae bop again, and future fave band for the next 30 years have a second entry at a modest 59 - the gorgeous Love Comes Quickly, being very different from West End Girls, as were all the next singles for a few years - despite naysayers at the time who had a problem with Neil's vocals making ludicrous claims that they all sound the same. They all sound like Neil Tennant, yes, but not musically the same.
Aretha and Elton are back - not together, that lies a bit in the future, but more notches in the run of solo singles, while Hipsway, a band that might have been successful, debut with The Honey Thief.

It's Xanadu for 3 weeks still holding off Love, for a very Spanish-flavoured top 2. There will be Portuguese-flavoured later in the year. The Delfonics hit 3 with the lush La-La beating Naughty Boy and Sam Smith's La La La by decades and Massiels' La La La La La La by months. It's a great track, it works without the vocals as an instrumental, but the lyrics and vocals are the icing on the cake. The Cowsills continues to be a new obsession making it another top 5, I shouldnt love it in theory, but I do. Highest new entry is the melodramatic murdersong genius that is Delilah, and another 16 Big Hits key track that got played over and over through to 1971. people often seemed to be murdering in the 60's, when they weren't dying in motorbike crashes, lyric-wise. I can't imagine these days the likes of Ed Sheeran getting all bitter and twisted by love, too busy simpering.
O.C. Smith's ode to his fictional late mom (another 60's theme) leaps into the 30, as Lulu leaps back into the 40 with Me The Peaceful Heart, one of my kiddie faves, tuneful pop with half of Led Zeppelin on it. Honest! Written by Tony Hazzard, of Ha ha Said The Clown and future fave Fox On The Run for Manfred Mann. Manfred going top 20 with Mighty Quinn, another Bob Dylan hit cover that is better than Dylan's version. Pretty much most Dylan covers in fact, bar Like A Rolling Stone, Knocking On Heaven's Door and Lay Lady Lay. Maybe.
Jeff Beck, another Micky Most act (see Lulu, Donovan etc etc), gets the 3rd hit version of Love Is Blue, and another future 1971 Northern Soul hit (see Delfonics) enters for The Formations, At The Top Of The Stairs being one I never got to hear in the 70's. Marvin & Tammi get another duo entry, keeping a continuous presence on my charts that I never anticipated - I hadn't realised just how often they charted in the USA at the time.

It's Saara Aalto on top for a 3rd week, chasing by 2 Black Panther tracks (which I saw this week), giving Kendrick Lamar 2 of the top 3. No relation to Austrian inventor and movie actress Hedy Lamarr, who basically invented bluetooth in the 30's (sort of) as part of a radio-wave missile-guidance system for allied troops and then became a gorgeous movie star in Hollywood. I can however listen to Kendrick Lamar now via bluetooth, so sort of linked. No relation in either case to fictional Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles. Hedy had a film-worthy life, though.
Florida Georgia Line and Hailee Steinfeld both have 2 top 20, and top 40, respectively, while CAIN (who?!) have the highest new entry with an unavailable Witchhouse track. Janelle Monae is back 3 years from her last chart entry - with Duran Duran - and 6 years since her monster fun. track. I now have a complete 1997-2017 database so can quote accurate stats from my charts during that period. Just 1968-1996 to add now...
5 Seconds of Summer get a second chart entry 4 years since the first, Imagine Dragons make it 4 off the latest album, Paloma Faith links with Sigala to give her 3 on the chart, and 23 in total. Sigala have had 4, and Franz Ferdinand get their 11th chart entry 9 years on from the last one (excluding their FFS project with Sparks).

18th February 1986
5 weeks on top for the mighty a-ha, keeping The Damned at 2, the same position the Barry Ryan original reached in the UK chart, and one place lower than it reached in mine. Kate Bush is the highest new entry, outdoing Cloudbusting and making it 3 top 10's in a row, with the exciting and brilliant Hounds Of Love, candidate for my fave Bush track. PIL get another top 10 3 years on from the last one, 8 years on from the first one, and 9 years on since The Sex Pistols burst onto my charts for Johnny Rotten.
Billy Joel has a double 70's oldies blast from the past, one having been uncharted at the time (but fab) and the other having been under-appreciated by me in 1978 (Just The Way You Are). 16 is still an under-rating for both songs. Hot Chocolate return for the last time, 16 years on from their amazing run of singles, though not one of their better efforts sadly. Starship and Mr. Mister get quick follow-ups, and the fab Blow Monkeys debut with the equally fab Digging Your Scene, the first CD single I ever bought (OK technically it was a later maxi single featuring a lesser Blow Monkeys single as the lead track, but I bought it for Digging Your Scene). CD's were on the way...
The mad, glam, and Mad Max-styled Sigue Sigue Sputnik debut with the unusual Love Missile F1-11. I liked it for being different to anything else, and they were having a laugh. It's a Hi-De-Hi to comic actor Su Pollard not being very amusing in song, and it's a Heeeere's Johnny to Prefab Sprout too.

17th February 1968
2 weeks on top for the epic Xanadu, keeping the almost-as-epic Love at 2, and the gorgeously sentimental Louis at 3. Highest new entry is a second top 10 for Gary Puckett, Union Gap and their ever-changing credits, in at 9 for Young Girl, back in 1974 the record voted the UK's fave oldie, which triggered a reissue hit and a number one in my charts of the time. yet again another "16 Big Hits" Aussie compilation track, so another song that remained a key dramatic pop track throughout the early 70's. It also offers reasonable advice to wannabe popstars when faced with too-young fans who look older than they are. R. Kelly clearly never listened to it.
Hugo M goes top 10 8 months earlier than he actually did in my charts of late '68, the cool Roger Miller brings his Little Green Apples in at 23, a subtle and classy track still, and deserves to be better known. Deep Purple (sort of) enter with a cover of Green Tambourine one spot behind the original, and Donovan simpers about Jennifer Juniper whimsically, while Simon & Garfunkel are back with a 2-year-old folk album track, from Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme, which inspired The Herbs. Sort of.
In at 67, an obscure band with an obscure pop song, quite decent though, although the melody is more than a little bit like I Can Hear Music, the future Beach Boys hit as done originally by The Ronettes and purely by co-incidence one of the musicians on The Ronettes and other Phil Spector productions (along with other musician mates who helped on The Parade tracks such as Hal Blaine), Jerry Riopelle, co-wrote and sang on this along with actor friend Murray MacLeod, and co-written help from Stuart Margolin - later better known as the wonderful Angel in The Rockford Files. I had never heard the song before this week.
Future Walker Brothers 1976 hit debuts for Tom Rush, No Regrets from me cos it's a great song, though the biggest version was Midge Ure's 1982 release. I think I'd plump for the Walker Brothers though, on balance. The Sweet Inspirations, Elvis' backing band, are back giving Whitney Houston's mum and early chart appearance. That leaves Smokey Robinson and Ray Charles to add to their tally of chart hits, both building up nicely during 1967.

18th February 2018
It's 2 weeks on top for the Eurovision hopeful, as Al Green gets a first top 5 since Let's Stay Together in 1972 (and it's reissue in 2010 when it topped my chart). He last made my top 10 with new material in 2008, and would have been charting for 50 years had I compiled charts in early 1968. The Eels grab a 5th top 10 some 21 years after the first one, while Lissie gets a top 20 8 years on from her first rocketing up 35 places.
Hailee Steinfeld gets greedy, up 40 spots into the 20, while also entering at 45 with BloodPop assisting, t'other assistants Florida Georgia Line leapfrog themselves. Kendrick Lamar joins himself in the 30, SZA gets a second top 40. Highest new entry is MIKA, last in my top 10 in 2013, and first in with Grace Kelly in 2007, in between topping with flop Rain in 2009. The Fratellis also enter, having been absent for almost a decade, but having 3 top 10's in 2006/7. Kishi Bashi grabs a 7th chart hit, Alan Walker a 3rd, Noah Cyrus a second, and sneaking in with an unreleased track (at least until friday) is Mel & Kim. Poor Mel died at a very young age at the height of their success, and are owed another bit of chart success, as it's not bad at all from what I've heard so far, 30 years on.

11th February 1986
It's 4 weeks on top for a-ha presiding over a volatile chart, Billy Ocean leaping to 2 for a career-best chart position after 12 years of trying, starting from 1974's Top 5 On The Run (under the pseudonym Scorched Earth, and as good as later gems). Five Star go top 3, Eloise takes the Damned to a career-high after 9 years of trying for a top 5 - and also reactivates the former original chart-topper, still the best version, in my oldies playlist. As does Stevie Nicks going top 20 with I Can't Wait reactivating an oldie on the playlist. Talk Talk get a first Top 10 in 4 years, since Today did it, and the highest new entry is a new peak for a record that pottered about my chart in 1985 - the awesome Behind The Mask in at 10.
PIL, Clannad, James Bown and Bono all return to the top 20 - except James Brown who does it for the actual first time after 16 years of occasional minor hits, admittedly past his 60's pre-chart peak. Genesis spin-off project of Mike Rutherford, and featuring the smooth vocals of former Ace vocalist Paul Carrack, gives a fab new entry for Silent Running at 23, 12 years after both first charted. Betty Wright pops back in with her first top 30 in 11 years, Manic Monday rockets into the 40 for The Bangles, Huey Lewis is back yet again with the Back To The Future theme, and John Cougar also climbs high with Smalltown - a song which I co-incidentally saw on The Cleveland Show this week.
Ozzy Osbourne is back 16 years since he went Paranoid with Black Sabbath, but not quite So Tired this time as he tries A Shot In The Dark. Midge has a 4th solo entry a decade since his chart career started with Slik-ness, and Kissing The Pink come back after a 3 year-break from The Last Film.

10th February 1967
It's straight in at 1 for one of yet 2 more tracks from my dad's vinyl (Australian)16 Big Hits album, and a major classic to any kids catching Dave Dee on Top Of The Pops with the Spanish sounds of The Legend Of Xanadu and his whip and leather trousers. I was SO happy to catch Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich reunited for one last tour a year or two before Dave's sad passing, such a great under-rated back-catalogue of singles - and this one isn't even the jewel in the crown for me, though it's close. The other track on the album was also a UK chart-topper - but not until October! The Good The Bad & The Ugly is the second Hugo Montenegro cover of a Spaghetti western classic theme, and it will appear again later in the year when I start showcasing my charts as they were then (I started in September) but in the meantime I'm carrying on doing charts as if there was streaming in 1967 - as in, available everywhere in the world at the same time, and everything eligible to chart.
Talking of which, the Love classic flop (later covered in 1987 by The Damned very well) Alone Again Or was released in January and since it never charted is entering here and now at 3, in case no-one else picks up on it as a Bubbling Under or whatever. It's a work of genius, understated, moody and flamenco-ish to boot. The Delfonics go top 10 for the first time (I was out the country in 1971 when it charted in the UK, so I didn't get to hear it till a year or so later, post-chart-run) with the fab future much-sampled and Swing Out Sister hit covered, La La Means I Love You. At 10, The Cowsills get a second top 10 - not bad for a melodic pop ditty I'd never heard until a few weeks ago, but which I'm currently obsessed by on my car CD.
Had I been charting in Feb 1968 the record most-likely to have topped my chart enters at 52, Esther & Abi Ofarim - I was a huge fan of Morticia-like Esther and the song. My love hasn't stayed over the years, but it's sweet enough in an oddball fashion. O.C. Smith is another US (minor) hit I associate with being bigger later in the year, but at the time I totally thought it was a Tramp - a stick and rolled-up hanging bag, top-hat-wearing moth-eaten be-suited Hobo. How naive I was! I always wondered what Hickory Holler was doing hanging around with a Tramp! O.C had to wait 9 years for another hit.
Otis gets knocked off the top spot, but posthumously covers the Temptations classic to great effect, new in, Pet Clark has a melodic minor one I actually do know, and ditto Sky Pilot, but the rest of the new entries are all new to me. Billy Vera & Judy Clay get a second entry with a good country-soul blend, Bowie improves on The Laughing Gnome and somehow I have managed to never hear this one in my life! Who Knew! Raymond Levere, is lush and instrumental and very 1968, but nice, and that's all folks!

Straight in at 1 it's a record from Saara Alto, Finnish runner-up in X-Factor UK, and former The Voice Finland candidate. That makes her twice a song contest fave, but I have to say I don't watch either shows anywhere these days. That makes it pretty extraordinary that a record I'd never heard until yesterday enters on top. Essentially, she's engaging, and it sounds like a Eurovision Song Contest winning track - if only the BBC could come up with one like it. I rarely have singing competition singers top my chart (excluding Eurovision), and usually it's well into their career when they do: Adam Lambert did it in 2017, Olly Murs in 2013, Agnes in 2009, Girls Aloud did it twice in 2007, and that's about it for the 21st Century, none of them doing so with the first single after appearing. There is precedence though - Mary Hopkin won multiple weeks in a 60's show called Opportunity Knocks, Paul McCartney signed her up to Apple Records, and she had 3 chart-toppers in 1968, 1969 and 1970 - only missing out on making it 3 in a row thanks to being the UK singer for Eurovision in 1970 with a cheesy entry, which slipped in before her final one.
Elsewhere, Florida Georgia Line get a double debut, both as featuring act, The Weeknd rockets to 3 with his Black Panther single, the film not even out yet, and giving him 5 years of top 3's since Twenty Eight hit 2, and including a chart-topper with Ariana Grande. Disclosure eclipse their Sam Smith 2012 Latch single (peaked at 10) in one fell swoop by sampling the brilliant Al Green, one of the greatest soul singers of all-time. Lissie's back after a slight gap, UB40 (or at least 3/8ths of them) string out a chart run to a whopping 38 years, and a six-year-old Mexican political track sneaks in at the bottom.

4th February 1986
3 weeks on top for a-ha, as Eurythmics get their highest charting single since chart-topper There Must Be An Angel, and Diana Ross rockets Bee Gee style up 60 places to 9 with Chain Reaction, for an 18-year run of top 10's. Madonna ticks off yet another top 10, Five Star get a first, and Russ Ballard has a big climb for Voices, his biggest solo hit and first top 20 as an artist since Argent's God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You in 1973.
A big top 40 climb for The Costello Show, and Johnny Rotten is the highest new entry as Public Image Limited get an 8-year-span of hits, John Lydon gets 9 years. Madness cover Scritti Politti and are rewarded with an instant top 40 hit outdoing the previous single, their first top 40 failure in 7 years. Talking Heads get a fab follow-up, Arcadia keep the Duran spin-off ball rolling, and Ruby Turner arrives 2 decades ahead of her Jools Holland career with a Staple Singers cover of a 1974 US chart-topper and Popchartfreak top 30.
Simple Minds keep the hits coming, Leo Sayer covers a standard over a decade after The Righteous did the definitive version, and 4 years ahead of Ghost making that classic a reactivated UK chart-topper. Poor Leo, timing is everything. Leo is great live, catch him if you can, even if not a huge fan, well worth it. Early Madonna-producer Jellybean enters a year ahead of his chart breakthroughs, Survivor return with another Rocky song, 4 years later, and it's not a patch on Tiger. Finally, The Bangles breakthrough with a Prince-song, and it's quality time with Manic Monday.

3rd february 1968
It's a first week on top for the then-recently-late Otis Redding's classic, talk about going out on top. One that popped "back" into my charts in 1974 and again topping in the 21st Century - actually 1974 was it's debut as I didn't start my actual charting till later in 1968 and these are what I like now. I will post a comparison chart when I get to my actual UK-top-30-based-only charts versus what I like now - I'm enjoying discovering stuff new to me and seeing how my tastes have changed with age.
In at 9, highest new entry is the loveable Louis Armstrong and his optimistic sentimental heart-tugger. It actually works best when shown against images of what a horrible world it can be thanks to Man. A big leap for The Delfonics, much more cult these days than in those days, and the chirpy melodic Cowsills is one I would have gone mad on as a kiddie, had I ever heard it. Reparata's ship leaps into the 30, as befits one I actually WAS mad on (but then I was rather mad on lots of pop songs), and Madeline Bell's I'm Gonna Make You Love Me enters at 34, I didn't know the song till the Diana & co version, but I picked it up on a "1968 Chartbusters" LP around 1976 along with some other fab tracks still to chart. I love Madeline and Blue Mink, very under-rated.
The Fire Brigade brings teenage hero Roy Wood back into the charts, and Don Partridge was huge for 12 months on TV at the time, debuting with Rosie. Sandie Shaw is back again, ditto The Monkees with a Nilsson song, Gladys Knight, & Curtis Mayfield aka The Impressions doing an early Move On Up hook. Leonard Cohen sneaks in, he last charted with new material last year, pretty much 50 years give or take with whole decades missed out (70's) and covers in between. The Pretty Things pop in with an obscurity, after the buzz had gone, but it's good.
