Although it only charted at No.74 on import only, I feel that Sonnet by The Verve should have gotten a proper single release. It still gets played quite a bit on the radio too, and it could have been a Top Ten hit for them.

Blur - This Is A Low This was, and still is for me one of the standout tracks on "Parklife" and despite not being a single it did get radio airplay and would later appear on their "best of".
Smiths - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before. From final album "Strangeways Here We Come". Was planned for release as a single but was quickly scrapped after being banned for lyric about "planning a mass murder". Didn't seem to do Mark Ronson any harm, when his version was released as a single years later.
Editors - Fall or Someone Says The whole of their debut album is fantastic and these two should have been singles.

It has to be You Could Have It So Much Better by Franz Ferdinand. I thought that was a real disappointment, and about most of the songs weren't as good as the first album. I remember seeing them live the same year it came out and The Editors were supporting them, and it was one of the rare instances (for me, anyway) where I thought that the support act was doing better.

For me, this year has definitely been possibly the most disappointing one for music, because of...
The fact of there being virtually no decent No.1's this year - (apart from maybe "Ruby" by Kaiser Chiefs, but let's face it, how long till we have another No.1 hit like that again?).
The Radio 1 chart is just becoming an even bigger joke with Fearne & Reggie (who pathetically choose to leave out songs from the chart without even announcing them firstoff, and the fact of Reggie always selecting some dire r'n'b song that he urges every chav and ned to text-vote for, which they do).
With X-Factor, I just think it's incredibly unfair to the competition of artists releasing singles at christmas time, when everyone knows who's going to win the Christmas No.1 and it costs Ladbrokes and William Hill too much money every year. I hate to say it, but as far I'm concerned Leon's going to have a shelf-life, like Michelle McManus I reckon. Plus, shows like this were unfair to all these unsigned bands struggling for years to get noticed, thankfully we now have Mobile Act Unsigned. Plus I'm all with Damon Albarn when he says that X-Factor should be banned.
Westlife. I still don't understand how they're still releasing tunes when the majority of their original fanbase will have grown up and moved on now and now it's mums and grandparents that dig them. I just hope that the Beatles back catalogue on Itunes next year will prevent any hope of these bar-stooled-only-getting-up-for-the-key-change-bland-balladeers from ever outdoing the Fab Four's tally of No.1s.
Cascada. How many more times do we have to hear that on the bus??
As for commerical indie pop, well let's just say I've been turning my back on most of that this year and re-visited the glory days of Madchester, Britpop, and particularly "Shoegazing". Roll on 2008.

I was in Fopp yesterday and I got some good cds for £3 each: they were 3 of PJ Harvey's albums (Rid Of Me, To Bring You My Love and Is This Desire?), Pornography by The Cure, Give Out But Don't Give Up by Primal Scream and Modern Classics by Paul Weller. thought fopps are shut Both the ones in Edinburgh were shut for a while, but ever since Fopp came into a partnership with HMV I think? The one on Rose St re-opened.
