Still a few gaps to be filled for some sports. Rob Walker is a notable absentee. I think Helen Skelton presented the swimming coverage last time. I believe most of the presentation will be done from Salford rather than Tokyo for obvious reasons.
Eurosport also has full coverage of the Games and its line-up includes Orla Chennaoui and Reshmin Chowdhury as presenters, Radzi Chinyanganya as reporter and Bradley Wiggins, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Greg Rutherford as pundits. Eurosport (owned by Discovery) becomes the main UK rights holder for the Olympics from the 2022 Winter Olympics though has a deal in place to sub-licence rights to the BBC for that Games and Paris 2024. Under the deal Eurosport has with the IOC, it is already the exclusive pay TV rights holder, hence the addition of seven dedicated channels for this Games.

Sailor Hannah Mills and rower Mohamed Sbihi have been selected to carry the GB flag at tomorrow's Opening Ceremony. It is the first time nations have been allowed to select one male and female athlete to act as flag bearers. Mills won gold in Rio and silver in London, while Sbihi won gold in Rio and bronze in London. Interesting choices and different to the norm - I would have thought the Kennys or at least Jade Jones would have gotten the nod but perhaps the low key opening ceremony influenced the decision? I believe the Kennys are staying outside the Olympic Village which meant they couldn't be chosen. Track cycling is quite late in these Games so it seems they're avoiding contact with others. The fact taekwondo is taking place much earlier than usual probably ruled out Jade Jones, as she competes on Sunday.

Odds for SPOTY:
(will definitely be revisiting this after the Olympics)
5/1 Dina Asher-Smith 11/2 Mark Cavendish 14/1 Laura Kenny 16/1 Alun Wyn Jones 18/1 Adam Peaty 20/1 Lewis Hamilton 20/1 Harry Kane 20/1 Raheem Sterling 28/1 Katarina Johnson-Thompson 33/1 Anthony Joshua 33/1 Duncan Scott 33/1 Jason Kenny 40/1 Ben Stokes 50/1 Sky Brown 50/1 Bianca Walkden 50/1 Laura Muir 50/1 Max Whitlock 66/1 Jade Jones 66/1 Helen Glover 80/1 Tom Daley 100/1 Jemma Reekie
Peaty looks great value at 18/1 though he'll be shorter with most bookies. Jade Jones' odds will tumble if she wins gold on Sunday. Laura Muir at 50/1 is tempting as well.

A somewhat low-key Opening Ceremony but still very well done. The drones above the stadium and the real life versions of the pictograms were particular highlights.

A somewhat low-key Opening Ceremony but still very well done. The drones above the stadium and the real life versions of the pictograms were particular highlights. Understandably not a lavish ceremony but I enjoyed it, unlike Piers Morgan who decided to publish his dislike of the ceremony/holding of the Olympics on the Daily Mail website during the ceremony.
In addition to the drones and the pictograms, I liked the cauldron and it was a nice touch to reveal the Wooden Olympic rings made from the trees planted in 1964.
I question the Portuguese flag bearers though, looked like it was an accident waiting to happen!

Drones, pictograms and the woodworkers dancing on their workbenches were all good.
But the understandably threadbare team procession was rather sad.

So Day 1 very much underway...
Max Whitlock comfortably through to the pommel horse final.
Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury beat the French no.2 seeds in the mixed doubles but Heather Watson out in the singles.
Adam Yates part of a group chasing a medal towards the end of an epic road race.
Helen Glover and Polly Swann through to the semis in the pairs rowing but only finished 3rd in their heat.
Seonaid McIntosh failed to qualify for the final of the 10m air rifle but has her best event to come next weekend.

Great effort by Adam Yates to give himself a chance. Just didn't have enough left to outsprint the others after a marathon ride. Richard Carapaz doubles the number of gold medals Ecuador has ever won.

The USA fails to win a medal on the opening day for the first time since 1972 (apart from the 1980 boycott).
GB hasn't won a medal on the opening day since 2004.

Worrying times at the rowing.
In the Women's Coxless pairs thta was Helen Glover's first defeat in over a decade but has to be put in perspective as it's a new partner for her.
Big shock was the Men's Eight's - they've been the form team of the year but only finished 3rd behind The Netherlands and New Zealand and have to go into a repechage.
Although the Men's Coxless Fours won their heat they were over a second down on the Australians in the other heat.
Now I don't know the ins and outs of the sport and can only go by what the commentators say but apparently they were looking ragged at the end and had lost their discipline.
Onky one of the rowers should be looking around but all of them were and seemingly this slows the boat down.
Hopefully this can be sorted out before the final but the Aussies are looking menacing.
There's also talk of a problem at the start but this was the same for all teams in their heat.
Great win for Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury.

Amazing win for Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury, 6-3 6-2 against the 2nd seeds Herbert and Mahut!
Heather Watson's defeat was just awful, 7-6(7-5) 6-3 against Friedsam, who was one of the easiest draws she could have got.
Only discovered this morning that the rowing started yesterday. Wasn't sure how Helen Glover would do, but a medal would have been amazing, if she went out in the heats then that would be a surprise as probably expected her to make the final.

A mixed start in the boxing. Kariss Artingstall wins her opener but Peter McGrail is beaten.

Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski also through in the doubles after saving a match point. Long for a doubles match including a match tiebreak, over 2hr. Won the match tiebreak 13-11.

Adam Peaty unsurprisingly quickest in the heats of the 100m breaststroke, James Wilby also through to the semis, 6th fastest.
GB through to the QFs of the football with a game to spare after beating Japan 1-0.
GB's men have started with a win in the hockey, beating South Africa 3-1.

The U.S. women’s soccer team look like bouncing back after their disappointing defeat against Sweden.
Currently U.S. lead 3-1. NZ just scored with 18 minutes left to play.
