Not sure they know what they are doing at Radio 2. Whoever is making these decisions hasnt a clue. I cant listen to Vernon Kay. He's a bloody idiot. Cant understand what he is saying most the time. What does he know about music. he is just a YES man. Absolute 80s for me now then or Greatest Hits.

I prefer Scott Mills afternoon show to Steve Wright's old show, but I never liked him anyway. It definitely won't be the same without Ken Bruce though.

Times By Alex Farber, Media Correspondent February 28 2023, 9.00pm GMT Ken Bruce had his contract with Radio 2 terminated early in an attempt to stifle promotion for his new show at Greatest Hits Radio, insiders have claimed. The veteran mid-morning presenter is understood to be “disappointed” by the BBC’s decision to broadcast his last show on Friday rather than letting him see out his contract, which runs until the end of this month. The decision has been taken to curtail his profile before he joins the Bauer-owned station from April 3, according to sources. “Ken has been treated appallingly after his many years of service,” a source told The Times. “They don’t want him out there promoting himself when he’s about to move on to another station. They are doing their best to scupper his chances on Greatest Hits.” They added that the tactic was unlikely to prove effective because of the widespread coverage of his exit in the press and across social media. A second source claimed that the decision was rooted in an attempt by the BBC to “claw back control”, adding: “They missed the boat with renegotiating his contract and decided they needed to get back in the driving seat rather than have Ken leading the narrative.” Dan Cocker, a radio producer who works for the BBC and commercial stations, said the corporation had been left in a difficult position. “Greatest Hits are promoting their new asset as much as possible. Ken’s name, image and voice are everywhere. Radio 2 recognise Ken is now a Greatest Hits brand and every extra moment he’s in a BBC studio is free advertising for his new gig,” Cocker tweeted. “It’s an unworkable position for Radio 2. They have no choice but to let him go sooner rather than later. They’ve also been generous. Any commercial network would have let him go immediately after announcing his intended departure. Giving him a week to say goodbye is generous.” Gary Davies is being parachuted in to fill in for Bruce until Vernon Kay takes up the 9.30am slot in May. Matt Deegan, creative director of Folder Media, said the break would make it harder for Bruce to take his audience with him to Greatest Hits Radio. “If Ken finished at Radio 2 on Friday and then started at Greatest Hits on Monday, it makes it very easy for listeners to switch across. With Radio 2 inserting an additional three weeks, it does give the chance for some listeners to calm a little while Gary Davies takes over,” he said. Deegan added that it also helped to lessen the shock for the station’s listeners to adjust to the incoming Kay. “If they’d launched Vernon on the same day, the double shock of losing your favourite and finding a new person that’s of a different style and era would probably hasten a transfer,” he said. A Radio 2 spokeswoman said: “Ken decided to leave Radio 2 and it’s always been known he’s leaving in March,” she said. “Returning to Wogan House for a week after a month of broadcasting the Piano Room sessions at Maida Vale provided a natural break.” www.thetimes.co.uk/article/ken-bruce-radio-2-bbc-off-air-kill-brand-krc0w8n6l

I remember listening to Vernon Kay on Radio X a few years ago and he was terrible. There was one show when he had a reporter in the studio doing music news who mentioned Alien Ant Farm. Kay immediately interrupted him so he could loudly perform his own version of the instrumental part of Smooth Criminal, followed by a Michael Jackson-style "Ow!" There then followed a very awkward silence while the reporter pondered whether it would be worth losing his job for the satisfaction of punching Vernon's teeth down his throat.

What do you all think of Popmaster's replacement "Ten To The Top" It's ok, i got all the questions right, apart from saying the wrong song for the Eurythmics one.
That Richie Anderson sure loves the sound of his own voice though, can't bare a minute going by without him speaking.

I heard a little bit on my way to work. Felt like Radio 2.
Does Mark Goodier have a new slot on GHR or is he just going to be doing his weekend show?

radiotoday.co.uk/2023/08/steve-wright-to-replace-paul-gambaccini-on-pick-of-the-pops-at-bbc-radio-2/BBC Radio 2 is moving Paul Gambaccini off Pick of the Pops to make way for Steve Wright. Gambo is staying at the station – he’ll host a new Sunday night show whilst Wrighty takes on 1pm till 3pm each Saturday in addition to Sunday Love Songs. Steve says: “Pick of the Pops is such a legendary show. Gambo brilliantly made it his own over the last seven and a half years, and now it’s my chance to give it a go! “It’s a great privilege to present such an iconic show on Radio 2, and Pick of the Pops fans don’t worry – it’s going be the same and different at the same time. Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2 says: “I’m delighted Steve will be picking up the mantle of the mighty Pick of the Pops in the autumn. I can’t wait to hear his unique take on the songs that over the decades have soundtracked all of our lives. Steve will continue to broadcast specials across the station, including our long-awaited Kylie Minogue listener vote, and he’ll carry on soothing the nation every Sunday morning with his ever popular Sunday Love Songs show.” Paul’s new show will see him playing some of his favourite lesser-known records from the 1950s onwards. He’ll be sharing his knowledge of the artists and bands he is playing, as well as mining his memory bank for the stories which reflect his life lived in music and radio. In October, Radio 2 will celebrate Paul’s 50th anniversary as a national broadcaster with a very special show, and he will also present a number of artist specials on the station. Paul says: “This year marks the 25th anniversary of my happy relationship with Radio 2, which began with America’s Greatest Hits. When I accepted the Pick of the Pops assignment in 2016, I was told it would be for between five and ten years. Here we are, smack dab in the middle, seven-and-a-half years later, and it is time for Chapter Three. I am delighted that on the new show I will have the opportunity to present neglected gems from the past century, be they album tracks, 7” B-sides or missed hits. The show will be live, because live is best. It is a happy presenter who gets to share great music of his choice with loyal long-term listeners. “I’m also grateful that this autumn Radio 2 will observe my 50 continuous years as a national broadcaster, which began on Radio 1 in October 1973.” Helen Thomas added: “I’d like to thank Paul for presenting Pick of the Pops so brilliantly since 2016. Given Paul’s passion for music of all eras and genres I wanted to create a new Radio 2 home for him which allows him to showcase his unparalleled knowledge whilst playing some of the best records in the world. I can’t wait to hear Paul’s first show in October, and I’m looking forward to celebrating his broadcasting golden anniversary this Autumn.” Steve’s forthcoming specials include Steve Wright’s Summer Nights (Monday 21st – Thursday 24th August 7-9pm). Produced by BBC Audio, Steve will be live with the songs that sound good in the summer, from L.A. soft rock, to Summer of Love hits and the coolest contemporary summer tunes, as well as playing listeners’ summer shout-outs. From Monday 21st August, BBC Sounds will launch Steve Wright’s Love Songs Extra, four 30m shows, each focussing on one year. Listeners will hear a blend of classic love songs and real-life romance stories, all from 1983, 1993, 2003 or 2013. Also previewing on Monday 21st August on BBC Sounds, Steve presents Your Ultimate Kylie Song, the full Top 40 countdown of Radio 2 listeners’ favourite Kylie songs. The show will be exclusively available on BBC Sounds from Monday 21st August and broadcast on Radio 2 on Monday 28th August from 4-7pm.

I guess that puts an end to the "Steve Wright to GHR" rumours (though Gambaccini is on there as well as Radio 2).

I often have Greatest Hits Radio on in small blasts when I'm in the car as a replacement for Absolute Radio. (on a longer journeys I use my phone).
These are my thoughts:
Overall, it's fairly easy to listen to. Like Radio 2 but without them desperately trying to pull in disgruntled ex-Radio 1 listeners by playing dull new stuff. There are a few stinkers in there but there's enough variety for most people and it doesn't seem as repetitive as Absolute Radio was.
DJs: Rossie - I had no idea who he was (and still don't) but he seems popular with the listeners. I do feel however, they may go for a bigger name for the breakfast slot at some point. Apparently Scotland gets a different breakfast show (and maybe some other slots too). Ken Bruce - just doing what he always does, a seamless transition from Radio 2. Debbie Mac - Does the afternoon show. Yet to hear her say anything funny or remotely interesting. Another slot that is potentially open to a bigger name. Simon Mayo - Again, just being Simon Mayo. As is often the case on the radio, his sidekick is painfully unfunny and annoying. Perhaps the one DJ who might be a bit shackled by the inability to play anything recent. Jackie Brambles - Good to hear her back on the radio again. Andy Crane - A bit of a hidden gem on the late night slot. Also fills in on other shows, including the Breakfast Show but it's hard to see an 80s/90s kids' presenter ever getting a bigger role on a permanent basis. Mark Goodier - Displaced by Ken Bruce so now on weekends and stand-in roles. Great that he's still going and seemingly fully recovered from his stroke a few years back. Des Paul - Another hidden gem on Friday and Saturday nights with his Rhythm of the Night Show, where you'll always hear something you haven't heard in a while.
