Bit gutted that theyve moved Gambo off Pick Of The Pops. Cant see Steve Wright doing it any better than Gambo or what Tony Blackburn did.
The only good thing is they will be keeping the 70s and 80s charts.
Thats the most important thing but i do wish the producers play more of the obscure tracks lower down and in some cases the proper versions unlike the other week they played The Crowd Youll Never walk Alone.
God knows what that version was but it wasnt the single thats for certain as The Nolans are pretty prominent on it. And they dont seem to like playing the remix versions very much either. The other week Lulu's Shout was on for 1986 and they played the original version instead of the 1986 version.
To be honest id rather have them play the whole top 20 in the two hours than 2 different years

As Mark has just posted. I have to say I love Paul Gambaccini's The Collection show. Two hours of brilliant music from 2020s (Last night 2023's I Remember Everything) back to the 1950s, which are mostly classic tracks or big Stateside hits that wont get played (to death) by GHR (Last night he only played 3 tracks which I'd expect GHR to play regularly). Blessed with plenty of his recollections from his encyclopaedic knowledge in broadcasting. I've tried Wright's take on Pick Of The Pops, but I feel it is too much of a radio straight-jacket for his talents. Mark, You also failed to mention: Forty years on from Madonna’s debut UK Top 10 hit, Radio 2 is celebrating the Queen of Pop’s amazing career in music by asking you to vote for Your Ultimate Madonna Song. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/MQhbhvdy9PkqMC33d1R9My/vote-for-your-ultimate-madonna-songYou can vote for up to 5 of Her Madgesty UK top 10 hits (so I can't vote for "Oh Father" booooo!) Voting Closes at 16:00 on 08 December 2023.

Having had Radio 2 on in the car the last few weeks after Greatest Hits Radio was taken off AM where I live, I've come to the conclusion that it's absolutely sh*te.

Well Claudia Winkelman has now gone and its now guest presenters until Romesh Rangenathan takes over.
Im so loving Gary Davies on pick of the pops, so i hope they do the right decision by giving the show to Gary. Im sure Steve Wright would have said Yes.
For me Gary Davies is the new saviour of Radio 2

Sunday 6th September 1987 covering for Bruno Brookes.

Paddy McGuiness are they serious. Yes i can see Michael Ball doing a great job on Sunday Love Songs but to be replaced by that idiot who i cant understand what the hell he is saying. More listeners will go now. And i hate to think who this Head of Radio 2 woman has got thats potentially better than Gary Davies to host pick of the pops.

I think the woman currently in charge of Radio 2 is awful. Some poor decisions. Making Paul O'Grady share his slot with someone else forcing him to leave, then letting the great Ken Bruce go and Popmaster at the same time as he owned it, and taking Steve off afternoons. All three were POPULAR by the public and far more popular then they're replacements, now two of those presenters are sadly gone. I agree about Paddy he is awful. I too dread to think who she will get for POTP hopefully Gary will take it on permanently, or failing that get Bruno Brookes. Be nice to hear him on a chart show again. (If he's asked or wants the job). Radio 2's best era was the 00s, they were still ok in the early 10s but late 10s onwards there was a slow decline starting with the axing of Janice Long and Alex Lester. And the playlist started to change too. It's no wonder Simon Mayo upped sticks for GHR. I bet Terry Wogan is turning in his grave, the best breakfast show Radio 2 ever had. There's still some okay shows like Paul Gambaccini's Collection which is one of the few good things she did get right.

What would be a good idea for POTP, as the BBC have used archive audio from an amateur BBC Top 40 recordings collector before for documentaries, and credited him also.
As I Know a lot about sound editing and feel I could do this myself, and I'm sure the BBC Producers are even better than me at audio editing is get an archive edition of the BBC top 40 from the week in the year featured.
Then turn it in to radio 2 for broadcast, editing out any mention of BBC Radio 1 from recording and the jingles and make it all BBC Radio 2, I would be able to do this myself, edit the Top 40 presenters sentence where he says BBC radio 1 to him saying BBC radio 2 (1fm maybe a bit tricky)
Then chose the selected tracks to be played and edit the old recording to suit what need to be played, I would be able with my editing skills be able to to something like this myself.
This will really take listeners back to the year featured.

Broadcaster Mark Goodier is to host BBC Radio 2's long-running Pick Of The Pops show, following the death of DJ Steve Wright earlier this year. Goodier, who was friends with Wright, said he was "honoured" to be taking over, "although I wish it were in happier circumstances". He will start in July, with Gary Davies holding the fort until then. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-68816377

Excellent, a good choice Mark Goodier, but even better would have been to let Gary Davies keep it

I too dread to think who she will get for POTP Paul Gambaccini's Collection is one of the few good things she did get right. Her name is Helen Thomas. I would have thought you would know that. Is any of your rant attributable to the fact that the Controller of BBC Radio 2 a woman ? It sounds like that might be the case. Mark Goodier to take over pick of the pops in july Excellent choice Has your opinion about "her" being "awful" changed as a result of this decision ? Just curious. I rarely listen to the radio, so I don't have an opinion one way or the other.
