How it works ? It's a mix between the official UK chart and my music preferences. For each week I will select my favourite song from UK top 10. So I can't declare favourite UK # 41 flop as alternative # 1 and my all-time favourite with UK chartrun : 2-3-8-15-24-35 can't spend more than 3 weeks on the top. My music taste is the mostly opposite to the majority of Haven community. So possibly you will prefer the official history of UK # 1s over my choices, but let's have fun. Possible future upgrades :1. Stars rate (from zero to five) for each top 10 song, but obviously not from start, because there are not enough bad / awful songs in 1950s UK charts. 2. It's for fun, so maybe I will add "virtual weekly sales" for each # 1 song from 1970 year, if this thread will survive.

Would it not be more interesting to ask voters for each chart to pick their own favourite from the top 10, rather than it be the actual #1 versus yours?

Would it not be more interesting to ask v oters for each chart to pick their own favourite from the top 10, rather than it be the actual #1 versus yours? Even with three days voting for each chart, we must spend five years for finishing any decade. Firstly I wanted to compile personal "favourite songs from any decade" list, but possibly nobody didn't have any interest in it (even in "favourite songs from UK chart" format).

We have retro charts and those show how we compare the number ones at the time with whatever else was out, I don't think I'm that excited by these particular polls. You'll see soon in 1990 when that "Turtle Power" song was #1 in the UK chart, what the various member of Haven think of it and what they might prefer that was out at the time. (In my own chart you can see it isn't that bad, it was my 2nd highest entry that week behind Sinead O'Connor, but there are also many other songs from the top 10 that will be above it. I think it will certainly do better than the song that replaced it anyway).

70th anniversary of UK chart is a good reason for refreshing UK top 10 hits from 50s decade in my memory.
Al Martino's first # 1 hit "Here In My Heart" got only 3 out of 5 possible stars in my rate, so didn't have any chances for win against four very good songs. I'm very pleased to announce the first imaginary number one.
14th November 1952 : Jo Stafford - You Belong To Me (4 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 2-5-2-2-2-2-2-2-1-2-5-5-6-9-11-8-11-12
First number one single for American traditional pop singer Jo Stafford.
Special mentions : Doris Day and Frankie Laine - Sugarbush - 4 stars Rosemary Clooney - Half As Much - 4 stars Bing Crosby - Isle Of Innisfree - 4 stars Doris Day - My Love And Devotion - 4 stars Al Martino - Here In My Heart - 3 stars
"My Love And Devotion" spent only two weeks in UK top 10, the rest "4 stars" songs remain in the race for number one chart position.
Bing Crosby has a good chance to become the first male singer with solo number one single. "Isle of Innisfree" is the musical theme from film "The Quiet Man", which became his hit in 1952 year and continues to feature in the repertoires of many artists.

13th December 1952 : Doris Day and Frankie Laine - Sugarbush (4 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : [8-12] [8-8-10-10-10]
First number one single for Doris Day and Frankie Laine.
Special mentions : Kay Starr - Comes A-Long A-Love - 3 stars
"Sugarbush" reached the top and hold # 1 in festive period. December wasn't good for new entries, "Comes A-Long A-Love" (future UK # 1) is my favourite song from this month.

Only six charts (plus one frozen week) were compiled in this year.
# 1 singles (1952) : 1. Jo Stafford - You Belong To Me (4 weeks) 2. Doris Day and Frankie Laine - Sugarbush (3 weeks)
Best UK top 10 hits : Jo Stafford - You Belong To Me - 4 stars Doris Day and Frankie Laine - Sugarbush - 4 stars Rosemary Clooney - Half As Much - 4 stars Bing Crosby - Isle Of Innisfree - 4 stars Doris Day - My Love And Devotion - 4 stars

10th January 1953 : Bing Crosby - Isle Of Innisfree (2 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 4-4-6-4-3-3-5-4-5-7-11
First number one single for Bing Crosby, who was the first legendary singer before Sinatra and Elvis days. Almost all his hits belongs to 1930s and 1940s, including "White Christmas" (possibly all-time # 1 best-selling single). "Isle Of Innisfree" became the most successful song for almost 50 years old singer in official UK chart.
Special mentions : Perry Como and Ramblers - Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes - 4 stars Eddie Fisher - Outside Of Heaven - 3 stars
Both songs from "special mentions" section were official # 1 hits in UK. Perry Como has a good chances to do it in my version too.

24th January 1953 : Kay Starr - Comes A-Long A-Love (1 week at # 1)
Rate : 3 stars
UK chartrun : 9-6-3-3-3-2-1-2-2-3-4-8-11-12-8
First number one single for Kay Starr. There are not any differences between my imaginary history and the official chart, "Comes A-Long A-Love" spent one week at # 1 in both versions.

In the Steve Waters book I count 32 number ones for Bing Crosby. That's more than the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

31st January 1953 : Perry Como - Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes (3 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 10-8-3-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-4-5-3-5-9
First number one single for Perry Como.
"Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" is a country song about a man away from home who is worried that his paramour may unwittingly stray from their relationship, which became a big hit not only in UK, but also in United States.

21st February : Jo Stafford did a comeback on the top and spent fifth week at # 1 with "You Belong To Me".
28th February 1953 : Danny Kaye - Wonderful Copenhagen (3 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 7-9-8-6-6-6-5-6-8-10
First number one single for American singer and actor Danny Kaye. It was a frequent situation in 50s decade, when the song became a hit after using in movie. "Wonderful Copenhagen" was recorded for 1952 film about 19th-century Danish author of many famous fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen.
Special mentions : Guy Mitchell - She Wears Red Feathers - 3 stars

21st March 1953 : Stargazers - Broken Wings (1 week at # 1)
Rate : 3 stars
UK chartrun : [12] [12-7-6-7-8-2-1-3-6-8-12]
"Broken Wings" is an important song in the history of UK chart. For the first time British act reached # 1 in singles countdown.
Special mentions : Dickie Valentine - All The Time And Everywhere - 3 stars

28th March 1953 : Patti Page - (How Much Is) That Doggie In The Window (1 week at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 9-12-12-9-12
Lita Roza's cover was more popular in UK and became # 1, but I prefer Patti Page's version. Despite many hits and some # 1 songs in United States Patti will not comeback in British singles chart.

4th April : Stargazers spent the second non-consecutive week on the top of hitlist.
11th April 1953 : Johnnie Ray - Somebody Stole My Gal (1 week at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : [6] [7-6-8-10] [12] [11]
There are good and bad news for American singer Johnnie Ray. Two his duets with Doris Day were my top 2 songs from this month, but both didn't reach UK top 10. So they are illegal for imaginary # 1 position. Fortunately for him another single "Somebody Stole My Gal" peaked at # 6.
Special mentions : Doris Day and Johnnie Ray - Ma Says Pa Says - not in top 10 (4 stars) Doris Day and Johnnie Ray - Full Time Job - not in top 10 (4 stars) Frankie Laine - I Believe - 3 stars

18th April : Second week at # 1 for Patti Page and her "(How Much Is) That Doggie In The Window".
25th April : Johnnie Ray is the best again with "Somebody Stole My Gal".
2nd May : Johnnie Ray hold # 1 position, it's the third week on the top for his successful single.

9th May 1953 : Doreen Stephens and Billy Cotton's Band - In A Golden Coach (There's A Heart Of Gold) (2 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 3 stars
UK chartrun : 11-10-9-7-8-3-7-9-12-12
It's good time to fix the injustice. Doreen Stephens is a main voclaist on this track. Her name was mentioned on the single's cover, but there are no information about it on UK chart site (and possibly in chartbooks too).
"In A Golden Coach (There's A Heart Of Gold)" was recorded to commemorate the Coronation of Elizabeth II on 3rd June 1953. On that week this single had peaked in UK chart (# 3).
Special mentions : Eddie Fisher - Downhearted - 3 stars

23rd May 1953 : Eddie Fisher - I'm Walking Behind You (3 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 4 stars
UK chartrun : 6-7-6-5-4-1-3-5-4-4-3-5-4-7-5-6-6-12
First number one for Eddie Fisher. In my opinion Sally Sweetland should not be considered as singer with UK # 1 hit, it's more like backing vocals. Just compare her contribution with Doreen Stephens' singing in the previous # 1 song.

13th June : The third and last week at # 1 for Doreen Stephens.
20th June 1953 : Frankie Laine - I Believe (3 weeks at # 1)
Rate : 3 stars
UK chartrun : 11-8-4-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-1-1-1-2-2-2-3-2-2-4-6-5-7-4-6-10
Frankie Laine became the first singer with two number one singles. Summer charts were very static, maybe it's a main reason of all-time "I Believe" records with insane 18 weeks at # 1 and 35 consecutive weeks in top 10.
Special mentions: Vera Lynn - The Windsor Waltz - not in top 10 (4 stars)

Patti Page reached #2 in my chart 3 times in the second half of the 1950s and I noticed those were also her (only) 3 top 10 Billboard hits in that time: Allegheny Moon (US #2), Old Cape Cod (US #3) and Left Right Out Of My Heart (US #9). The last of those 3 is now also on Spotify - it wasn't when I visited the year in my retro chart.
