Chas & Dave at number one. After this reached the heights of #2 in the UK, their only remaining hits top 40 hits were sport-related - they weren't credited on the Tottenham cup-final hits but whilst they didn't live up to the heights of their first one, they did get two more in the top 40, and they were credited on Snooker Loopy which got as high as #6 in the UK chart. The big surprise perhaps is that the follow-up "Margate" didn't get into the UK top 40. But it should be a decent-sized hit here.
A FLock Of Seagulls perhaps appear to be the start of the "shoe-gaze" sound that became popular this decade with some indie acts, Jesus & Mary Chain then following shortly after until it became common-place. In any case "I Ran" is a fairly classic debut so you probably think it was a big hit, but actually it didn't even reach the UK top 40, falling short at #43.
Behind them, two UK #1s that stayed on top for just one week. Bucks Fizz got their 3rd number one but Charlene was a one-hit wonder with a song she'd recorded about 5-6 years earlier and had been forgotten until a radio station in the US picked it up to play and got a reaction. There were 2 versions, the one with the talking bit in the middle got the single release and in the USA it got to #3 so they released it in the UK too and it got to #1. One of those memorable cheesy hits that often makes it onto "worst song" lists. A bit of a guilty pleasure?
With "Blue Eyes", Elton John got his first UK top 10 hit since "Song For Guy" and there were a number of other flops until "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" would be a top 10 hit the following year and that one took forever to get into the top 40. In the USA his John Lennon tribute "Empty Garden" was released and that's on my next playlist.
A few follow-ups to big hits not doing quite so well by XTC, Altered Images and Dollar, although the latter matched the peak of the previous one. Also the Mobiles whose hit "Drowning In Berlin" reached the UK and NM top 10 (#9 in both charts) but Amour Amour didn't make the UK top 40.
I'm not totally sure who reads these, I suspect though that
TheThorne might do, and may be even more horrified by what is going to replace Chas & Dave at number one. I think he may already have a good guess..
