17 Prince - 1999
This though is where I am! I have said before I never really got Prince at the time, the first song I really loved by him was 'Raspberry Beret' and then 'Sign Of The Times' but I was never a fan or really cared about him. But over the years I have loved him more and more, all through his brilliant-dodgy catalogue. Of course I should have loved '1999', it is a very rocky album, also blending synth-pop, funk and disco. A bit like the lists you raed on Rolling Stone for example, you don't always think about the records that are above or below certain choices. Do I really prefer 'Thriller'? I think it has more highs and definitely more lows, they are pretty much on par for different reasons, yes that means it's coming soon. Anyway his fifth album peaked at #7 in the UK and just #28 in the UK, a surprise maybe but maybe the British public were as slow on the uptake as I was. 4.5/5

16 Pat Benatar - Get Nervous
I am very biased I know, this is her 4th album and the bridge between her classic rock sound and her new wave/pop rock sound she will have on her next records. It features "Shadows of the Night" one of her best songs and it reached #4 in the US and #73 in the UK. 4.5/5

15 Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)
This was their fifth album and the one that propelled them on the way to becoming a stadium band. This is really when they go full in with their rock anthem sound and before they get all pompous. It's one of their most consistent albums and fetures the singles "Someone Somewhere in Summertime", "Promised You a Miracle" and "Glittering Prize" It reached #3 in the UK and #68 in US. 4.5/5

14 Depeche Mode - A Broken Frame
Their second album and now without Vince Clarke, but that really doesn't hurt them at all, sounding less like a pop band and more like a serious synth act. The single "See You" is one of the best of the 81-65 era. But its not one of their best albums so falls short of the top 10 this time. It reached #8 in the UK and just #177 in the US, its going to be awhiel until they make an impression there. 4.5/5

So who is 13 Michael Jackson - Thriller
A record I did own physically on LP but I gave it away before my last house move, not sure why I did that gave away quite a bit of vinyl but that was before the revival. The main reason this isn't in my top 10 or a 5/5 album is 'The Girl Is Mine' and to a lesser extent The Lady in My Life" but all the other tracks are brilliant. Not sure I need to give any stats for his 6th album. It was number one everywhere and has sold over 70 million worldwide. 4.5/5

19 Ultravox - Lament
Their sixth album and the last one I would say is essential, fetauring two of my favourite tracks "Reap the Wild Wind" and "Hymn". They maybe are still doing the same thing but nobody not even OMD are making synth music as good as this, its just so atmospheric and foreboding, a theme that will for sure reappear in their next record. It raeched #6 in the Uk and #61 in the US. 4.5/5 You have the title Lament instead of Quartet? This is a great album, mind you I have nearly all their albums. So many great tracks Reap the Wild Wind, Hymn, We Came To Dance among them.

"Reap The Wild Wind" has just entered my 1982 retro chart. Only at #28 but there are loads of brilliant songs on these playlists. "Gypsy" by Fleetwood Mac was mentioned a bit earlier and that entered too this week.

"Gypsy" by Fleetwood Mac was mentioned a bit earlier and that entered too this week. The fun thing about doing this is discovering those songs or tracks that I didn't know in and outwith the top 40 here and in the US and listening to critically acclaimed, before their were famous and under the radar acts from these times although the big names will of course do well still. So far in 1984 for example, I have had so many weird discoveries that PIL do the theme song to the movie 'Hardware', 'Red Dwarf' steals the riff from 'Loving The Alien' in its theme and Capella - You Got To Let The Music samples an obscure Alphaville track and thats just in the last couple of days.

12 Roxy Music - Avalon
This had to be coming and yes fair dos it is a better record than 'Flesh and Blood' mostly due to not having any dodgy covers but it still misses the top 10 though. 'More Than This' for a long time was my favourite Roxy Music song but I do prefer "Same Old Scene" now thanks to "Ashes To Ashes" the TV show. Their seventh album raeched #1 in the UK and #36 in the Us. 4.5/5

'Hymn' is my favourite Ultravox song now - but that could be because of 'Vienna' overplay over the years.
1999 is one of Prince's best albums. The title track is one party song that I never tire of hearing!
There's not much to say about 'Thriller' really. I like 'Bad' better overall, but 'Thriller' has some of the best pop songs ever written on it.

11 Altered Images - Pinky Blue
The second album from my favourite Scottish pop princess of the time. Clare Crogan, and still is in many ways hehe And this after hearing all three is the best record, the next albums has some highs but this one is the most consistent and captures them at their peak with their early indie sound. Weird dance mix of "I Could Be Happy" slightly ignored, I had to play the 7" version, yes great at the discos but why on the album? The titl etrack is just the cutest song. This was their biggest album raeching #12 in the UK. 4.5/5

No I agree 'Vienna' would not be in my top 5 Ultravox songs even at the time, I even prefer 'The Voice' to it

So who is in my top 10
We have 7 UK acts and 3 US.
There are 3 loosely defined as rock acts, two indie/alternative, four synth pop/new romantic and a singer/songwriter
3 acts have made previous top 10s

I had to find the 7" of I Could Be Happy which is really good but making a song go on forever without adding anything useful is pointless and doesn't enhance the experience at all.
As Roxette would later say, don't bore us, get to the chorus... Or at least to the first verse.
Ok some songs have great long intros. But not "I Could Be Happy"

10 Huey Lewis and The News - Picture This
Ok we are into the top 10 with Huey Lewis and the album that helped them become stars. Thanks to a single written by Robert John "Mutt" Lange.. "Do You Believe in Love" becam etheir first top 10 hit single and yes it's probably the best song on the album but the other singles were great as well and I coudl gro wto love this album as much as their next two, slight spoiler. The album itself raeched #13 in the US and has sold over half a million there.

9 Toto - IV
Yes I am really listing all the cool acts in this top 10 so far. Well this is their fourth album and their most famous and successful. A band I really loved at the time thanks to the two huge singles "Rosanna" and "Africa", but I love the whole album now. It reached #4 in the UK and US and has sold over 5 million worldwide. 4.5/5

8 A Flock of Seagulls - A Flock of Seagulls
The coolness continues with this new wave band from Liverpool and their debut record. The band are pretty much a meme now due mostly to their greater success in the US and their ridiculous haircuts, thank you 'Pulp Fiction', they must say. So they were never going to be Duran Duran but their music is just as good. "I Ran (So Far Away)" is one of the best songs that year, although I only heard it first in GTA:Vice City. The album reached #10 in the US and just #32 here, where it didn't sell amazingly but over half a million in the US.
