58 Visage - Visage
One hit wonders are tricky, but I went into this expecting a brilliant single and lots of songs a bit like it but not as good and thats pretty much what it is. It is very atmospheric and just brings back memories of old Smash Hits and my sisters magazines with all these pretty men with makeup on hehe But I know Visage arent really one hit wonders and Steve Strange is one of the most important people in 80s music and culture but I cant help feeling that way. Their debut album reached #13 in the UK. 3/5

57 Kate Bush - Never For Ever
Ok for some this might be too low but up until a few years ago I really hated Kate Bush's music with only one exception especially her pre 'Hounds Of Love' music. I realise now that it was not justified at all and I shouldn't have held by 8 year old views for the next 40 years. Kate Bush on HF helped with that. So yes I still don't really like 'Babooshka' but I can now appreciate it as a piece of art and to be fair this whole album is. The album reached #1 in the UK. It is also a barometer album for this list. the question do I like this more than the Kate Bush album? I asked myself about 50 times. So with that we have our first... 3.5/5

56 Scorpions - Animal Magnetism
'Winds Of Change' wasn't quite my first intro into Scorpions, that was 'Passion Rules The Game' 2 years earlier which I heard on a nightime heavy metal show on ITV. Yes its not a fever dream, there was a HM/Rock show on ITV around 2am which played videos and live performances. It was usually on just after we came back from the village discos. Anyway I was quite late to the Scorpions party but its great now you can go back and hear acts early music so much easier. This album was really good, I honestly didn't know what to expect. This was their 7th album and it reached #23 in the UK and #52 in the US. The album cover worries me a little though hehe 3.5/5

I've always loved Babooshka, and Army Dreamers is a classic too.

55 Phil Lynott - Solo in Soho
As promised we have more Phil and this is his debut solo album featuring 'King;s Call; his track with Mark Knopfler as well has the sometime theme of Top Of The Pops, 'Yellow Pearl' but there are lots of great tracks on this. It reached #27 in the UK. 3.5/5

54 Dexys Midnight Runners - Searching for the Young Soul Rebels
This album finished much higher than I expected as I only like a couple of their singles but this was great whether I will be so positive about their next album remains to be seen. Another debut album it peaked at #6 in the UK. 3.5/5

53 Jackson Browne - Hold Out
I only knew a few songs by Jackson Browne but I had strong feeling I would like his stuff, if I checked it out. This was his 6th album and a very successful one for the singer.songwriter giving him his 1st and only US chart-topper. Never a big name in the Uk, this record went to #44 here, his second to chart. We have more from him in 1983 so looking forwrad to listening to that album. 3.5/5

52 Robert Palmer - Clues
Robert Palmer was an artist I didn't know at the time but I was very familiar with the singles from this record due to later Radio 1 plays. Like many people I never noticed him until a certain hit from 1986. But he had been around since 1974 and this was his sixth album. It was his most successful yet in the Uk , including his first top 40 here 'Looking For Clues'. It reached #31 in the Uk and #59 in the US 3.5/5

51 Siouxsie and The Banshees - Kaleidoscope
Another band I really didn't like at the time, they and Siouxsie especially was just too weird, I was 9 ok!! I would eventually appreciate them in 1988 and over the yaers I have grown to love at lot of their back catalogue. This was their 3rd album and it went to #5 in the UK. 3.5/5

59 Ambrosia - One Eighty
This is probably the last act on the list that are pretty unknown to most here. they are a Californian rock band who had been going since 1970, who had several top 5 and top 20 hits in the US. I discovered them through a Spotify playlist focused on AOR a few years ago. This was their fourth album and biggest success let by the top 3 US hit "Biggest Part of Me". The album reached #25 in the US. As an Air Supply/Styx fan, did you know these guys as well Earl Purple ? 3/5 "Biggest Part Of Me" NM #5 in 1980, plus two smaller hits "Holdin' On To Yesterday" (#31 in 1975) and "You're The Only Woman" (#37 in 1980)

I've always loved Babooshka, and Army Dreamers is a classic too. Of course they are both classics, Army Dreamers should never have got Kate Bush into a sing-off. Babooshka was up against Haven darling "It Must Have Been Love" by still only narrowly lost.

Wuthering Heights may have swung it for you but we'll never know. I've always said that Army Dreamers should never have been bottom 2.

50 The Cars - Panaroma
It still makes my top 50 albums of 1980 but for The Cars I was a little disappointed, its still good but they have definitely been better and will be. This was their third album and I expect all their 80s albums will finish pretty high on these lists. Only one hit single of thsi album though but it reached #5 in the US and sold over a million. 3.5/5

49 Tenpole Tudor - Eddie, Old Bob, Dick & Gary
This was their debut album and I was really not sure what it was going to be like. The big hit "Swords of a Thousand Men" is one of my favourite songs of the year and 'Wunderbar' is fun as well but most of the tracks are Adam & The Ants knock offs, but not as good but considering Adam & The Ants are top of their game right now, this is still an enjoyable record. It only raeched #44 in the Uk. 3.5/5

48 Bryan Adams - Bryan Adams
Another artist we will see a lot in these lists. This is his debut album and it already shows a lot of promise, all the ingredients are already there but he had fronted a rock band prior to this. No success outwith his native Canada but the US was starting to take notice. The album reached #69 in Canada. 3.5/5

47 I Just Can't Stop It - The Beat
One of the bands that were the defining sound of the UK in 1980. If 'Mirror In The Bathroom' wasn't one of the most played songs that year I would be shocked. There was much more to them than just ska, they incorporated soul, reggae, pop and a bit of punk attitute into their music. This was their debut album and went to #3 in the UK 3.5/5

46 Bob Marley & The Wailers - Uprising
More reggae now with the master of them all, this was his 10th album , the last to be released in his lifetime. And boy does this record sneak up on you, might be one of the most bottom heavy albums I have ever heard. So yeh side A is pleasant enough, nothing azming but then side 2 and the last 3 tracks some of the best songs he ever wrote. 'Could You Be Loved' would definitely be in my top 5 Marley songs. It reached #6 in the UK. 3.5/5

45 Daryl Hall & John Oates - Voices
I can't believe this is already their 9th album as apart from 'She's Gone' they have had no real bangers in the 70s at all. That is certainly not the case with this album. When I was a kid the big song on this LP was 'Kiss On My List' but over the last decade another song has taken it's place by some distance becoming their most well known song for many Millenials and certainly Gen Z. 'You Make My Dreams Come True'. These two songs tower above everything else but its still a very strong album with one dodgy cover but also a shock that they did the original version of '"Everytime You Go Away". The album though was only a hit in the US and Oz peaking at #17 and #19. 3.5/5

44 Split Enz - True Colours
I expected this to be higher but too many songs just didnt gel with me eventhough I have heard this album before. It is still really good just thought it would be top 30 quality. This was their 5th album and breakthrough record internationally. It reached #36 in the UK and #40 in the US and of course number one in Australia and NZ. 3.5/5

43 John Cougar - Nothin' Matters and What If It Did
Another artist who has been around a lot longer than I realized. This is actually John Mellencamp's 4th album and his biggest success so far in the US although he will explode with his next record. This one reached #37 in the US. Expect everything he releases to be around the upper half or higher in furure lists. 3.5/5
