Alanis Morissette would have something to say about this .... "I Write The Songs" was written by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston (his band rejected it!), and first recorded by Captain & Tenille on their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together; it was then covered by US teen idol David Cassidy peaking at UK #11 in August 1975; it was then covered after persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, by Barry Manilow (a New York easy listening songwriter who did not want to have another hit with a cover version so soon after "Mandy"), and his version of "I Write the Songs" was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling and hit USA #1 this week, as well as Canada #3, Australia #5.

With EMI running out on their then deal with The Beatles, they reissued a glut of their singles which reached the UK top 40. Elsewhere the Arkansas soul singer Johnnie Taylor scored his biggest hit of his career with "Disco Lady" USA #1. The UK #25 Canada #14 song was produced by Taylor's long-time producer, Don Davis, with Parliament/Funkadelic being the backing musicians.
