Shock horror, The Beatles drop outside the top five! They share 6th place with an act from the North East of England, who sadly did not sync their former UK & USA #1 hit "House Of The Rising Sun" well enough (UK: July; USA : Sep) to make this chart, so i might as well post up arguably the best single of 1964.

Petula Clark had been having hits since 1954, but her revival was thanks to teaming up with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by producer Tony Hatch and his wife/singer Jackie Trent. The biggest being the former UK #2 (but a Pick Of The Pops #1 which the BBC used as the aggregate of the 4 existing UK charts) & future USA #1 "Downtown".
