The relentless negativity of the media really, really annoys me. And the right of these so-called experts to be so personal with their criticism can do the squad no favours.
I'm not asking for a happy-clappy, everything's great, reaction. But to give a fair, balanced assessment, with some credit where it's due, wouldn't go amiss.
It wasn't a great performance. But England were better than Slovakia overall. They defended well, again. They were lucky with the timing of the equaliser, but not lucky that it happened.
As I said some time ago, Switzerland will be a proper test, and should be a good game. Another quarter final defeat may be looming, but, yet again, a Southgate-led England team have made the last 8 of a major tournament, and I think he and his coaching staff deserve some credit for that.

I'd written a long reply to this mentioning how Spain have offered more in the first 15 minutes than England did in the first 80, then Georgia go and score. Football, eh?

Spain had the ball in the Georgia half for 18 of the 18 minutes and are 1-0 down after a single 10 second counter attack lol
BUT I'd rather lose playing to win than be scared to play at all, you may scrape a few wins because you are far superior to most opposition but it isn't what winners do, it is meant to be entertaining

I thought England were terrible, but somehow they've managed to get through, so we are still in it. Switzerland should give us a lesson in football, but you just never know. What I was pleased about was that we didn't go over the top in our celebrations, because we had only just beaten Slovakia by a single goal, not France or Germany! And totally agree about Panda's comments on Matterface at the end, I just said Shut up you stupid man and muted it, but then there was that little handbags at the end.

I've read or heard very little in the media where England is concerned - saying how well the opposition has played or how well they defended and dealt with the England's front four attacking players. If there is a mention - it's always "well they're 45th ranked in the world, so we should be beating them comfortably". Well we know that!
Every team England have played in this Euros have been defending pretty well and nullified the front 4. It look a long throw in and a set piece move in extra time to win against Slovakia.
Although we're all asking for change somewhere in the team - I think that boat has sailed of what changes he can do without risk. Southgate will just carry on with starting the same starting 10 and we'll probably hear or say the same thing in the next match.
Saying that - Switzerland should be an intriguing match.

With Guehi suspended, Southgate might be forced into a change of system, unless he just goes like for like with Dunk, Gomez or Konsa playing there.

Round 2: Spain 4-1 Georgia Georgia threatened a shock, taking a first half lead completely against the run of play, but Spain were ultimately far too strong and set up a quarter-final against hosts Germany on Friday.

4 of England's 7 matches against Slovakia have seen them come from behind to win 2-1 (both qualifiers for Euro 2004 and at home in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers).

The behaviour of the English players and goading the Slovakia bench was disgusting. I hope they lose now.
Most arrogant national team going and their supporters are not much better with their World War 2 songs about German bombers, which the FA do nothing to stop.
The post match interviews from Bellend and Kane just sums up their ego.
If England win this, it will be unbearable and we will hear constant repeats of "Something nice for us to have after Brexit, Tories, COVID and Cost of Living".

Two of those 3 you mentioned were Charlton Athletic academy players, Gomez leaving us in 2015 and Konsa in 2018. Replacing a Palarse defender would be great.

Round 2: France 1-0 Belgium A late deflected goal gives France the win in a largely uneventful encounter. They reach the quarter-finals and await either Portugal or Slovenia. For the remaining members of Belgium's "Golden Generation", their last chance has now surely gone.

I was just happy someone scored in that France Belgium game so we didn't have another 30 minutes to put up with. France had lots of shots, how many of them were anywhere near the goal is another question!

The two sides higher up in the FIFA rankings than England were France & Belgium who stank the place out this evening with that turgid match, decided by a deflected goal.
At least England have got to the QF of the Euros with goals through open play, unlike France.

Belgium have no business being that high up the rankings. They started the tournament 10th in my rankings, compared to FIFA's absolutely inexplicable 3rd.

This Portugal v Slovenia game reminds me of Spain v Georgia last night except Portugal aren't as good as Spain and Slovenia aren't quite as committed to the counter attack as Georgia were.

You know that Ronaldo is thinking Portugal only won that shootout because he scored the first penalty, nothing to do with the gk making three great saves... Cant stand him, he takes every free kick, will he have a tantrum if he doesn't? Ridiculous!

What a great game considering it was 0-0 over 120 mins. Plenty of drama and the Portugal keeper became the first goalkeeper to ever save three pens in a shootout in the Euros.
I was looking forward to the France/Belgium game but that was rather dull!!
France v Portugal should be good though!
