Yeah, I think i've charted every Blondie #1 bar The Tide Is High too. I never took to that one. All the PSB hits are here as well. "Spaceman" is often rather unfairly overlooked. It's a pretty unorthodox pop record really and manages not to be infuriatingly irritating like the vast majority of novelty songs.

20 (29) Thunderclap Newman - Something In The AirI couldn't find a picture for the record cover so here's an aubergine instead I think last time round I was the only person to actually chart this song. What’s wrong with you all? Perhaps no one knows it, or maybe it’s just universally unpopular and only I can see the appeal of this rather ace number from the late sixties. I know absolutely nothing of Thunderclap Newman other than this song. Were they a one hit wonder? Either way, they’re presumably still profiting from the success of “SITA” due to its apparently irresistible appeal to advertisers. This is one of only four songs to climb into the top 20.

19 (57) Buggles - Video Killed The Radio StarThis song experiences a rather large rise to shoot up thirty eight places on the chart. I don’t think I need say anything too profound about the song because essentially it’s a rather fun synthy sounding pop record from the late 70s, albeit a very uplifting and enjoyable one. It should probably be noted that this isn’t the only record in the top 20 that Trevor Horn has had a hand in…

I hope I win some sort of award for being so slow with this... 18 (06) Madonna - Papa Don't Preach So Madonna tumbles twelve places out of the top 10 and so fails to equal last year’s feat of having three songs in the top 10. I could probably write some rubbish about how it addressed a relevant social issue but first and foremost it’s just a very fine pop song.

17 (19) Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 UA small rise then for a song that I think remains a very powerful and affecting ballad. The video only serves to enhance this with the intense focus on her face as she sheds a tear. A birrova classic.

16 (03) Pet Shop Boys - It's A SinA rather large drop then for a song which occupied a top three spot last time round. This was a bit of an over the top epic affair and it yet again wins the battle of the PSBs #1s on this chart.

15 (17) Blondie - Call Me Everyone loves a bit of Blondie don’t they? Well they should do anyway. They sure knew how to write a pop song. I think I’m right in saying they’ve already had two entries on the chart. Still two to go as well. Incidentally i'm really unsure as to what the cover for this actually looked like because an image search seemed to produce several. This one with some Japanese sticker seemed to come up the most often, so I went with it

14 (39) Tatu - All The Things She Said Ah. What a breath of fresh air Tatu were. Released at a time when I was seriously concerned at the dearth of decent pop music in the charts this really did the business. Forget about the whole faux lesbian gimmickry (although that was rather fun too while it lasted). The only thing that matters is that this was pretty near to pop perfection. More Russian lesbians please.

13 (12) Blondie - Atomic Blondie chalk up another hit in the top 100 then with “Atomic”, a sort of new wave/disco fusion, which is rightly often considered among their best tracks. One more entry to come for them.

12 (44) Soft Cell - Tainted Love A cover itself and covered many times since yet this is widely recognised as being the definitive version. A wonderful, slightly sinister synth-pop track which is instantly recognisable from those opening notes. It manages an impressive 32 place rise up the chart this year.

11 (13) Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer Ah, good old Snap. German electro-dance fabulousness. I never really got “The Power” I have to say. This has certainly always been my favoured Snap #1 and a choon which I consider something of a dance classic. The wonderfully tasteless “I’m as serious as cancer” line in the rapped section of the song only serves to enhance its appeal. Top 10 to come then...

10 (11) Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The WallA small rise into the top 10 then for Pink Floyd's one and only #1 hit. Taken from the concept album "The Wall" part 2 serves as a sort of protest song against rigid schooling and indoctrination in the classroom. It's quite probably the song most closely associated with Floyd given that they released so few singles despite hardly being representative as their career as a whole.

09 (10) Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)Another song that rises a single place up the chart. Apparently the lyrics are actually directed at former band members whom Harley felt had abandoned him. So much for my assumptions that this was a happy, feelgood song then. Even so with that irresistible chorus I find I usually can't help but smile...
