I hate that Pink Floyd song, the video gives me nightmares too.

08 (14) Human League - Don't You Want Me You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar... well yes, we all know it. Didn't they almost consign this to the bin? Instead it turned out to probably be one of the more defining pop songs of the 80s. Rightly so too really as it comes fairly close to pop perfection in my book...

07 (07) Blondie – MariaYou may have noticed that the top 10 in this countdown isn't actually that drastically different from last years, and this is emphasised once again by the fact that we have a non mover at #7 and the final Blondie song in the chart. That song is Maria, their 1999 comeback record, and what a comeback it was too. Record buyers clearly agreed as it scored them their biggest hit in almost 20 years and discounting re-issues became their first top 40 hit since 1982, proving that Debbie Harry and co still had something to offer a different generation of record buyers...

06 (09) a-ha - The Sun Always Shines On TVAh, a-ha, those 80s Norwegian popsters. Probably rather better than they were ever given credit for. This wonderfully intense number complete with soaring vocals demonstrates that they sure knew how to make a good pop song

A-Ha are great and deserved to have way more #1s than they did - love all of the ones since my last comment.

Ta folks 05 (04) Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next Now i'm very unsure of my facts here but I think this holds some sort of record - the longest title of a #1/longest bracketed title of a #1 single... hmm, I forget. At any rate it's probably the only song about the Spanish Civil War that ever has or ever will make it to the very top of the chart. Taken from the This Is My Truth... album this continued the trend that was seeing the Manics moving into much more commercial territory and at the same time was establishing them as one of the biggest bands in Britain.

04 (05) Madonna – FrozenSwitching places with the Manics this year then is "Frozen", a track belonging to Ray Of Light era, William Orbit produced Madonna and a song which marked quite a departure for her musically. It probably stands as one of my favourite Madge tracks...

03 (08) Rolling Stones - Paint It BlackA decent rise this year for the Stones with what I consider to be one of their finest moments, with the upbeat eastern riff acting as a counterpoint to the morbid, near apolcalyptic lyrics. Unfortunately it's not quite enough to clinch the top spot...

Ok, then here goes, after a breathtakingly slow countdown the end has finally been reached. But who will claim the #1? 02 (02) Animals - The House Of The Rising SunAnother golden oldie and something of a folk rock classic but this song remains stuck at #2 again. Not actually written by the Animals I believe the lyrics were moderated to change the main protagonist from a prostitute to a gambler. Anyway, I think we can all agree that there should be more songs about whore houses...

Which means that I end the countdown in truly anti-climactic style to proclaim that the #1 is none other than... 01 (01) Madonna - Like A PrayerAh, so a non-mover at #1. Sorry to disappoint but this really is pretty damn close to being the perfect pop song. A power pop song featuring a gospel choir and a controversial video which itself features a black Jesus and burning crucifixes - what more could one ask for? Well, apart from frog eating mutant cabbages of course...
