The Day Before You Came did much better in Sweden though Fourteen weeks for Dancing Queen is not to be sniffed at I guess! (I sourced my Australian stats from the same website as you by the way! Great ABBA stats! ) copycat!!!!!!!!! TDBYC(i hate these abbreviations btw ) did very well in Germany as well if remember correctly........

AND don't forget they were primarily an album act as well.Ironically ABBA Gold sold the most copies in the US of any particular country, where they did the worst when they were at their peak, over 6 million copies sold?

I don't know whether it's the norm in the US, but to sell 6m and only reach 63 seems pretty good to me! It seems to be a staple seller everywhere over the last fifteen years, it must be up quite high in the best selling albums of all time!

There definitely seems to be something fishy there. Either the record company are exaggerating the sales or a lot are not being picked up.
I know the US is a large album market and Gold will have gone on selling quietly year by year but it seems impossible to have sold 6million and not gone above #63. Even in the US to shift this number of copies (averages around around 8k a week) it should have constantly been re-appearing in the top 200 album chart.

This would be my Abba Top 10
01 Knowing Me Knowing You 02 The Winner Takes It All 03 Andante Andante (Would have made a good Christmas #1) 04 Hasta Manana 05 S.O.S. 06 Angeleyes (Am I the only person who preferred this as the A-side to Voulez Vous?) 07 Another Town Another TRain 08 Fernando 09 Head Over Heels 10 When All Is Said And Done (would have been a better single in the UK than Day Before - I do like Day but it was too long and intricate for the UK singles buying public)
That's today but to be honest while the top ones would remain there at any particular time tracks like One Man One Woman, Piper, My Love My Life, Super Trouper could replace some of the others.
Obviously, it's Abba so they're still good songs but the ones I like the least:
Waterloo Nina Pretty Ballerina Hole In Your Soul Voulez Vous Eagle
The fact that they made videos for One Man OW, My Love ML and When I kissed The Teacher makes me think that they were seriously considered as singles.

And even then it would have its peaks and troughs when there re-ignition of interest in revivals, anniversary editions, re-promotions worldwide and the like. You're right, it doesn't quite sit with me either, but then I just put it down to my lack of knowledge of the US market.

Thanks for this Rubcale. I didn't know they made a video for When I Kissed The Teacher, I will go and look this up in a minute. I always thought it would make a good single. It's funny how a lot of peoples non-favourites is Waterloo, but I supposed it must have worked for them at the time, but the rest of the releases quickly eclipsing it. I always prefered Ring Ring as a Eurovision entrant to Waterloo, but then it had its chance and didn't quite cut it. I also agree with Nina Pretty Ballerina as well - makes me cringe But Eagle! Thats one of my favourites!

1) In the USA Top 200 Albums Chart, once an Album has been in the Chart for 104 Weeks - 2 Years - its is DISQUALIFIED from the Top 200 if it drops below a certain, (low), Position. I forget which Position it is, but 'Gold' dropped below it. It was not allowed into the Chart again.
2) Instead, it was moved into the USA Pop Catalogue Album Chart, & it has spent many 100's of Weeks in it, Peaking at No.7, in 2003. That is how it has managed to sell over 6 Million in the USA without getting higher than No.63 in the Top 200 - it has been a consistent Seller.
3) The claims of 6 Million USA Sales for it have nothing to do with Universal - they have been verified by the Record Industry Association Of America - RIAA - who have Awarded the ABBA Album 6 Platinum Disks - for 6 Million Sales. Soundscan, who add up, (by Bar Codes), every USA CD Sale in MOST USA Stores, have it on less than 4.5 Million Sales.
This is because Soundscan do not add in Sales from some USA Chain Stores. Nor do they add in Sales from Mail Order USA Music Clubs - and 'Gold' had sold 884,000 in the BMG Music Club alone, by 2002 - and it has been selling for 5 Years since then. Indeed, 'Gold' must be well on the way to 7 Million USA Sales, by now, as it got its 6th Platinum Disk, way back in 2002 - 25th June 2002.
4) EUROVISION - ABBA did NOT enter The ESC twice. In 1973 they entered the Swedish version of, 'A Song For Europe'. Several Swedish Acts performed Songs that they hoped would be chosen for the 1973 ESC. 'Ring Ring' was the Song that Swedish TV Viewers wanted to enter Eurovision, but - unfortunately - the final choice was made by a Panel of Judges. They decided that the ABBA Song was only the 3rd best Song, & it was unable to enter the Contest. Swedish TV Viewers were so angry that in 1974, the choice was made by TV Viewers, & they chose 'Waterloo'.
5) In Australia, ABBA were actually losing popularity, just as they arrived there for their early 1977 Tour. 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' only reached Number 9, at the time. Then, it turned out that 'Arrival' was their final Number 1 Album there - until 1992 - 'Gold'. After, 'Arrival', no ABBA Studio Album got higher than No.4 in the Australian Album Chart. By 1981, 'The Visitors' could only get to No.22 there..... After, 'Money, Money, Money' became their 6th Australian No.1 Single, ABBA never again even had a Top 3 Hit in Australia. Their highest Charting Hit, after 1976, was 'Chiquitita' - No.4 in 1979.

^^^ Thanks for this Orthon7, especially the bit about the US album charts. My knowledge of the US chart system is somewhat limited, but thats makes a lot of sense, so thanks for clearing that one up for me. I did know about the bit about ABBA not being in the ESC twice. In my post I was just referring to the actual entrant and potential ABBA entrant in 73. I think I must of missed a word out in my earlier post and might of given the impression that I thought they were in the final twice, so sorry if I wasn't clear.

Yes, thanks for the info. on US charts Orthon7.
Explains the apparent discrepancy. I would say that if the chart was based solely on sales each week and no exclusions then Abba Gold would have had a respectable position in the top 200 in many weeks.

This must've taken you quite some considerable time to compile! It took a little while! I sat down and listened to all the ABBA albums back to back, then rated them, then compiled, changed it a bit, and then did a definative list on my way home on the bus the other night! I did basically the same compiling my favourate Top 40 ABBA songs, i definitely had favourate songs of theirs over the years, and the ones that i only got to know much later. There arent many i havent heard yet, so it was easy just going through each album's tracklistings and compiling favourate Top 50 from there and eliminating song by song till i got to Top 30, 20,10,5 and finally no.1.
