Fergie stood by him after the 2006 World Cup because Fergie is Scottish so he probably hates England anyway and was quite happy with what Ronaldo did. He was more concerned about Rooney's red card in a pre-season friendly that got him banned from some Man U games.

He was more concerned about Rooney's red card in a pre-season friendly that got him banned from some Man U games. Ferguson has a record of standing by players who might have been hounded out of another club. He did it with Cantona after the kung-fu kick and he did it with Beckham (an Englishman, note) after he was sent off against Argentina in 1998.

I think with Ronaldo it may simply be that he wants to live in Spain. Maybe Portuguese culture is more similar to that in Spain than it is to Manchester. Maybe his Spanish is better than his English, after all, Spanish is a closer language to Portuguese than English is.
He was happy to play for Man Utd for a while and has achieved his ambitions there of winning the Champions League and now feels a bit homesick.
If Man U and Real Madrid can do a "player swap" then it might happen.

Is it though, really? He could probably get what he wanted at Man Utd anyway...

Anyone think Man U might go for Arshavin?

i think if they have any sense they would bring in arshavin and maybe pavlyuchenko, he has looked good and arshavin would settle better with another russian in the team... sell saha ofcourse, that guy is made out of porcelain...
i wouldn't be surprised if man u get sneijder in with the deal. he has had a better tournoment than ronaldo anyway and is valued at a fith of the price

They should do. He's a fantastic player and is surely destined for a move to a big club this summer. I've seen people mentioning the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and Everton but there's no chance he'd move to any of those. He already plays for a team that's better than any of them and probably gets just as much money as they'd pay him. He is 27, but that's younger than the likes of Drogba, Ronaldinho, Deco and Berbatov who could all be making £20m+ moves this summer...

exactly, ronaldo is great but he over achieved this season. he is a 20 a season man but he got over 40. its one of those once in a lifetime achievements that if he can recreate that next season he will be the best player ever! (but he wont)
i feel he is setting himself up for a huge fall moving to madrid, what will everyone say when he has a good season and scores 20 goals, that he has underachieved and it was the wrong move. in his mind if he can never reach anywhere near the heights he did at man u he will be filled with doubts about his ability and regret at moving. that will only dent his confidence, he has also never had a real injury. if he misses a few games the pressure will be on him and ive seen glimpses that he isnt on top form with his 3 penalty misses recently, with a new league to settle into i cant see him making the impact madrid want. on top of that they had a poll and the majority of real madrid fans said they DON'T want him, add a world record transfer fee and an already volatile only instant success will do fan base, i can see him being booed even.
even if he stays, slightly unsettled and unable to better this season even if he was in the right frame of mind i reckon he would under achieve at man u aswel. man u have to sell him based on this and like mark says they can build the best tem in europe with the money

Is Arshavin at real then? I know Schneider is there, think is with 80 mill being mentioned is that it isn't all paid up front, it's in instalments, united need a replacement though.

They'd probably accept 20 mill then?

Zenit have got wealthy backers - that's how they've achieved so much recently. However, if they were offerd £20m for Arshavin, I would guess they'd take it. The potential availability of a player like that must make Man U even more inclined to sell Ronaldo.
