In a way it's a shame Sam Murray won silver rather than bronze. It would have been a fitting coda for the last medal of the Games to be won by the host.
As it is, the last two medals were won by the current and future host...

Excellent review Mark and I can't really disagree with anything you've said.
There have been so many highlights.
Here's a few of mine that haven't been talked about so much:
Winning two golds in a minute on Day 5 For me, this was when the Olympics really came to life for GB. Yes, we won our first gold medals the day before but they were expected. These weren't. Stott & Baillie taking victory in the canoe slalom, with Florence & Hounslow getting silver and Peter Wilson winning shooting gold about 60 seconds later was the moment when it became clear that GB was going to do very well at these Games. It's great when people expected to do well manage to cope with the pressure and fulfill their expectations but there's something special about someone unheralded winning a gold medal that few, if any, people saw coming. With Gemma Gibbons' emotional judo silver medal later that afternoon, this was probably my second favourite day of the Games after Super Saturday.
Jade Jones Everyone celebrated their gold medal(s) in their own way but there was something infectiously adorable about the way she threw her helmet towards the ceiling, then sprinted around the arena with the Union and Welsh flags after wining her taekwondo final.
GB's women beating Brazil at Wembley I have very little time for football at the Olympics but to beat Brazil at Wembley in front of 70,000 was a significant moment for women's football in this country. However, I feel the quarter-final defeat to Canada may have killed a lot of that momentum.
Montenegro's women's handball team In one of the greatest pieces of sportsmanship in the Games, with 30 seconds remaining in the final, and victory beyond their reach, the Montenegro team stood off their Norwegian opponents and applauded them as the clock ticked down.
Some of my low points:
Drugs cheats winning medals People deserve a second chance in life but that should be dependent on them accepting their mistakes and showing remorse. So it's rather galling to see several athletes who have shown no remorse for their past actions standing on the medal rostrum.
Ignorance in the first few days After a slow start to the Games for GB, the doom-mongers were having a field day. Yet, a simple glance at the schedule would've shown the first few days were unlikely to yield much success. The needless negativity spilled over into the press but thankfully, didn't seem to spread to the athletes.
Wendy Houvenhagel Yes, it must have been heartbreaking not to get to ride in the team pursuit, but to come out and publicly criticise her coaches and team-mates probably suggested they were absolutely right not to pick her. Her rant was bitter, selfish and unprofessional and the fact that Jess Varnish, a cyclist half her age was able to be a million times more dignified after her own personal disappointment spoke volumes.
The badminton fiasco A ridiculous situation brought about by a ridiculous format change that could ultimately end up costing the sport its place in the Olympics.

Thank you, everybody. It's been an absolute pleasure posting in these threads and talking about the Games with you.
I never thought for a second there'd be this many replies (if you go back four years' worth of pages, you'll see how much of an increase the numbers are on Beijing).

Thanks for your round-up Mark. I don't actually agree with you about the Jamaicans, specifically Usain Bolt. I'd say he was fairly arrogant. However, it's easy to forgive him because there's so much to be arrogant about.
People often describe Muhammad Ali as the greatest ever sportsman. He, like Bolt, intimidated his opponents before the event. However, with Ali, it was impossible to measure how good he was. That's not the case with Bolt. In an event where the World record is usually broken by one or two hundredths of a second every few years, he absolutely shattered the records. He's probably past his prime but he is still winning comfortably in events where competitors can often only be separated by technology.
The other Jamaican sprinters aren't half bad either. In yesterday's relay they ran 100m in an average time of 9.21 seconds.

Thanks for the tremendous updates MrH. I've thoroughly enjoyed them and always checked into the nightly predictor for the projected medals the next day.
It's wonderful to have so many passionate sports fans on here and again it's down to MrH that the sports forum is thriving. It's a big passion of mine and I almost spend more time in here than gubbins.
Lastly the question of Usain Bolt. I think he's absolutely at his peak right now but his motivation isn't and probably won't be. He's 26 which is a peak for a sprinter ! I do hope he has a go at the 400m next year.

Great thread(s), MrH (even though I haven't posted)!
And a great performance from Team GB - still incredible to think that in the first 4 days, we only won 4 medals (none of them gold), yet the medal rush started as soon as August started! Somehow, I do not expect a repeat of this in 2016.

Somehow, I do not expect a repeat of this in 2016. Agreed. Team GB/England can only win at home. Note: Wembley 1966 and London 2012.
