Somehow, I do not expect a repeat of this in 2016. Agreed. Team GB/England can only win at home. Note: Wembley 1966 and London 2012. So how do you explain the 19 gold medals in Beijing?

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy's just absolutely walked the USPGA and no-one was paying the blindest bit of notice... Gone off him quite a bit since erarlier in the year when he was acting like a petulant kid when results didn't go his way. There was actually good coverage this morning on the sports bulletins this morning and I would say he is now almost a cert for a place in the final of SPOTY. I hope they don't start messing about and try to increase the size of the final pool. With only ten places it would be quite exciting to see what the final list would be.

He's still very young and everyone makes mistakes. He seems to learn from his, which is a good sign. (Remember his comments about the Ryder Cup a few years back?)
Best golfer in the world today, several million in the bank already and a glamourous girlfriend. It probably would come as a bit of a shock when something goes wrong.
And yes, he should make the SPOTY shortlist after that. I can't see any other non-Olympian/Paralympian making the list unless Lewis Hamilton somehow wins the F1 title, which looks unlikely.

Shot put gold medallist Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus has been stripped of her title after failing a drug test. New Zealand's Valerie Adams is promoted to gold. The gold is New Zealand's sixth, just one less than Australia. ATHLETICSShot put (W) 1. Valerie Adams (New Zealand)2. Evgeniia Kolodko (Russia)3. Gong Lijao (China)

Low points
05. Victoria Pendleton being relegated in the first heat of the Sprint Final.
Whereas I thought she was mostly to blame for the disqualification in the Team Sprint I elet she was "forced" out of her lane by the Aussie. The objection should not have stood. There is no doubt in my mind this affected her performance in the second and ultimately decisive heat.
04. Gary Lineker as chief anchor man for the BBC.
They really got this wrong. He looked ill at ease, didn't seem to have any depth of knowledge of many of the events and asked inane questions. At times when Ian Thorpe (what a loss if he is gay - he's gorgeous) you could almost feel his contempt of Lineker.
I haven't yet heard one person who didn't nominate Clare Balding as the leading commentator.
03. Rebecca "give me your love and sympathy" Adlington and most of the GB swimming team.
I can't put it any better than Maximo Mark did in a previous post.
Unfortunately the Australian head coach had already been contracted for the next 3 years or so. There's going to be an in depth review and while there will be a couple of independents on it guess who'll be heading it - yes the self same head coach!!
When such a large number of swimmers are coming in at what is supposed to be the pinnacle of their career with slower times than at the Olympic trials there seems to be me to be a deep rooted problem - higher up the chain............
02. Charles van Commenee and the GB Athletics Team.
On the face of it this looks a strange choice but take out our Gold medal winners plus a few others and there were an awful lot of sub-par performances.
I am thinking Mr van Commenee has gone as far as he can. The relay teams are a perfect example. As mrh has said no thought was put into how best the women's 4x 400m could maximise their chances. Putting Dai Greene into the men's 4x400m almost certainly cost them a bronze medal and putting the two rookies on the 3rd and 4th legs of the men's 4 x 100m without seeming to pay proper attention to the teams' own changeover markings looks amatuerish. There were actually a couple of commentators including Darren Campbell who called this as soon as the running order was announced.
01. Mark "whinger" Cavendish.
I have always had a tremendous respect for Mark Cavendish but I lost most of this when he started whingeing after losing out in the final of the road trial about how the other teams "especially the Australians" didn't try to win but ganged up to make sure GB didn't with negative tactics.
Is this guy for real? Does he honestly expect other nations to help GB win the Gold?
While personally I have reservations about the winner (anyone who fails a doping test should receive a life ban) the guys who won the medals took the race on, didn'yt have to rely on others and were thoroughly deserving of their success.
Now we hear that he will probably go back to the track for 2016 (just cause he hasn't a medal). We've such a crop of great track riders already it would be a laugh if he didn't get on the team .

Interesting how Russia really rushed up the medal table in the last few days although they always had a large number of Silvers and Brionzes.
Finally, as everyone else has said a big thank you to misterhamster for all the hard work which went into organising this wonderful thread. He was also able to answer any questions you had.
I always came here in the morning to see exactly what was happening on a particular day and the predictions for Bristish success. I think they mostly went on current world rankings but in the Olympics it is pretty much a lottery amongst the top competitpors in most events.

Thanks rub. It's been great to have such an active discussion about the games. People might not always agree with each other on some things but that's why we have the debate and then you move on to something else. (Gubbins trolls take note)

I'm now back from the Olympics, and have a reliable internet connection again. Sadly, I've missed the comments here, but I do intend to go through the thread from start to finish, and throw in some belated remarks, wherever appropriate.
At first sight, I must add my voice to the chorus of praise for misterhamster. Definitely a gold medal performance.

My marks out of 10 for the BBC team:
Clare Balding - 9 As others have have said, as well as myself - she is the best sports broadcaster in the country. She clearly puts in a huge amount of research whatever sport she is covering and that is why she can move seemlessly from presenting horse racing one day to rugby league the next, then doing radio commentary for tennis the day after that. After Channel 4's shambolic World Athletics coverage last year, they needed to bring in a seasoned pro for the Paralympics and they couldn't have done any better. And it looks like she'll be spending a lot more time on Channel 4 next year, having been signed up as their main horse racing presenter as well, following the channel's acquisition of the BBC's racing coverage.
Gary Lineker - 3 And in contrast, we have Lineker. A football presenter, whose only foray outside of football that I can remember was presenting golf now and again. But that doesn't mean he can't do other sports, does it? Well no, but as Clare Balding showed, you have to actually take the time to learn something about the sport you're covering and it quickly became apparent that Lineker hadn't bothered to do any research at all, a trend that seems all to common within the BBC's football department.
Gabby Logan - 8 I've never been a massive fan of Gabby Logan. I didn't dislike her but it always seemed like she was just "there". But the nightly highlights show Olympics Tonight was one of the best parts of the BBC's coverage for me. She dealt very well with the constantly changing line-up of star guests and managed to put up with John McEnroe's idiotic questions (if you've seen the film Best In Show, think of the commentator and that sums up McEnroe on Olympics Tonight) and Amir Khan giving results away before they'd shown them. There were some nice regular features and each show ended with a series of images from the day before ending with the chimes of Big Ben as the Olympics moved into a new day... Her only negative was on the last edition of Olympics Tonight where she managed to kill off Luke Campbell's mother and sister and had to broadcast a correction at the end of the show, stating they were alive and well.
Sue Barker - 7 Solid stuff from Sue. You know what you're going to get with her.
Mishal Husain - 5 A really odd choice to front the morning coverage on BBC1. To my knowledge she had no experience of sports presenting and really didn't seem to know what she was talking about. She was competent enough as a presenter.
Jake Humphrey - 6 Did OK as a general anchorman but I felt he struggled a lot at the velodrome. He generally does a solid job on football and F1 so it's disappointing when he struggles with something like the Olympics. Again, it comes down to research.
Sonali Shah - 5 I think she's much better as a reporter than a presenter. Struggled at times and even managed to invent her own weightlifting event: "the snatch and jerk"
Manish Bhasin - 7 Spent the whole Games on BBC3, where he was as reliable as ever.
John Inverdale - 7 Not everyone's favourite but I think he's an underrated part of the BBC line-up and having once looked like being the next Des Lynam, he seems to have been cast aside in favour of younger presenters. One of the moments of the Games for me was when he consoled Hunter & Purchase at Eton Dorney after they finished 2nd and he had to fight back tears as he spoke to the camera about how tough it was to see people he regarded as friends being that disappointed.
Dan Walker - 3 I just can't stand this guy. I've stopped watching Football Focus because of him. Everything he says is annoying. He reminds me of Alan Partridge and seems to have a very over-inflated opinion of himself. The fact he barely got on TV before midnight suggests BBC don't hold him in very high regard either.
Steve Cram - 7 I know some don't like him but he has knack of coming out with a great line for a big moment and as someone old enough to remember David Coleman, who sadly, could barely string a sentence together by the end of his career, I can appreciate someone who describes the action in a crisp, clear way.
Jameson & Moorhouse - 5 I used to quite like them in the past, but their schtick has become repetitive (saying "I can't believe he just did that!" after every other race doesn't really highlight the enormity of someone's achievement) and they didn't do a great job of accurately describing what was going on during the races.
Garry Herbert - 7 for enthusiasm He would've been really annoying if GB hadn't been doing so well.
Matt Baker - 7 An improvement on Mishal Husain in terms of presenting but he came into his own during the gymnastics events and his unbridled joy at the medal-winning performances of the British gymnasts only added to the coverage.
Other positives: Ian Thorpe Denise Lewis Michael Johnson Mike Tucker Mark Cavendish - filled in the gaping holes in Jake Humphrey's knowledge Leon Taylor Eddie Butler's voiceovers on last night's video packages
Negatives: Hugh Porter - all over the place - BBC even had to edit his commentary for Pendleton's keirin victory because he got her and Meares mixed up Jonathan Legard doing volleyball Eddie Butler's archery commentary
