 I didn't even know she had plans for a proper single release of this US promotional song - one of the best on her album, a #3 hit and a #1 when covered by Ryan Adams. So this was a nice New Year surprise.

It's a shame she's so inconsistent. Some of this album is by-the-numbers corporate pop - some of it (like my number one song Body Talk) is brilliant. It's perhaps better than the first album but she has even less of an artistic identity than she had then. Weirdly the deluxe edition is the one most widely available and is the only one that has the title track (and some of the best tracks!). Dedicated fans or fans of nipples will buy both.
Trivia: members of Semisonic and The Kane Gang are involved in this as well as Liam Howe (Marina), Babyface(!), Dan Smith (Bastille), Jim Eliot (Kylie, Ladyhawke), Rick Nowels (Madge, Lana) and Jonas Quant (Hurts) .

She launched her own label imprint Vroom Vroom this week, headed by this return to experimental dance pop. While the latter two tracks listed are a bit light, i highly recommend Trophy which bangs hard and the track that got this up from top 5 to number one: the amazing Secret (Shh) which brings her back to her goth/synth/indie sound from the 2010/11 period. It's all produced by Sophie - a guy - and she says the whole new album is by him. So this is Charli effectively "doing a Marina" and going back to her heart - not worrying about being a popstar.

:lol: And here's Charli's mates with their biggest ever Tony Hit! Infectious production from Jarrad "Mistr" Rogers (who did Doing It and many more pop hits). So this was one of six songs put forward for selection in a TV show by the BBC for UK's Eurovision entry (like they did for years). Sadly this Will Young / Hurts (remember when they said they'd enter?) type melancholic pop ballad didn't win - they wouldn't even reveal the final table of results but it seems from YouTube reactions this never had a chance. :cry: The studio version is better so hopefully it will still get a release / video.

Or "songs FROM AND inspired by". A host of eighties artists brought together by Gary Barlow for an album of which half the songs are in the film - so it says on IMDb. While some are true to form - Kim Wilde back on propulsive powerpop, ABC with all the drama, Midge Ure sounding great - too many have the touch of Barlow all too evident and sound like Take That with guest singers.

Not the type of chaos they wanted - a complete hodgepodge of mixed styles and quite annoyingly inconsistent. When The Blackout Meets The Fallout recalls Swastika Eyes but is over in less than two minutes. The opening track is the weakest thing ever made.

Some further Rihanna comment: For those that think her vocals aren't the strongest, she actually proves them wrong on two album tracks in a row - Higher and Close To You. She even does a Sia on the latter, though she probably fainted in the studio afterwards! :lol:
As to her singles success on my chart. On looking back, i was surprised to see Kiss It Better is her highest ever position. Umbrella was my #27 hit of the year 2007 but only got to #3 as it was kept off by other big songs.
Her five hits: 'Pon De Replay, Umbrella, Shut Up and Drive (all top 10), Live Your Life with TI (top 75) and this.
She's been on my year-end Sh*t List almost as often (would have been on it more if i hadn't dropped it)!

This could easily have been top as well. I only relegated it for being a bit too long (though i've not yet listened to the shorter continuous mix). Welsh DJ/producer pulls off a Boards Of Canada style set of downtempo dance - with occasional trance-y flourishes of old.

Score to Mark Cousins' Hiroshima doc - already shown on TV. More synth based than guitar based.

I didn't even know she had plans for a proper single release of this US promotional song - one of the best on her album, a #3 hit and a #1 when covered by Ryan Adams. So this was a nice New Year surprise.
