TONY'S ALBUMS CHART: 31st AUGUST 2019
1 NE Taylor Swift - Lover SPOTIFY
Her 3rd topper in a row (i've not checked but i don't think she did it before 1989). The (mainly) synth-pop magnificence of 1989 returns. I bought the CD, which i still haven't done for Sharon Van Etten or Hatchie. That's how impressed i was.
The album really kicks in with track 2 Cruel Summer - takes balls to copy an iconic title of another song but it is sublime and - astonishingly - co-composed by St. Vincent! (as Annie Clark). If some "indie" people still aren't won over by the involvement of Jack Antonoff and Joel Little then see Annie's credit and turn up their noses they are being wilfully delusional. The Man sees Joel Little even re-use his voice effects gimmick from Lorde's Tennis Court.
Some songs could be cult synth goddess Allie X - Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince, and the echodrop beauty of Afterglow. Death By A Thousand Cuts reminds me of Diana Vickers - the subtlest synth pop with brutally lovely lyrics. It's Nice To Have A Friend has a beatless calypso chant backing that sounds like something Foster The People or Friendly Fires might do. Paper Rings is a more acceptable and less cloying variation on Me!'s skippy-pop (i usually detest skippy-pop so for me to love it is no mean feat).
Soon You'll Get Better (featuring a barely noticeable Dixie Chicks) is a spare ballad about her parents' fights with cancer - her mother has just had it return (my mother died of secondary cancer). Following that with False God (a hymn to delusion no less) is just genius placement - it sounds like Banks or Jessie Ware, i swear if i played it blind to someone they'd never guess it was Swift. You feel both lifted and disturbed by the track placement. The tracks i've not mentioned aren't filler, either.
By leaving ...Calm Down and Me! near the end of the album she's got immense confidence in the material - rightly so. A higher level 9/10 (don't do halves!) - better than Marina.
2 NE Eskmo - 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (OTVST - Score) SPOTIFY
It's a shame the (young) fans don't bother with his scores. They are always more successful artistically than the compilations.

TONY'S ALBUMS CHART: 14th SEPTEMBER 2019
1 NE Bat For Lashes - Lost Girls SPOTIFY
Bought CD. It's excellent if short - a common niggle of artists trying to recreate the eighties. They don't have to be that short in 2019! 5 more songs would be great. She describes So Good as her "Madonna song" and she's not wrong! It only needs an ill-fitting t-shirt and a headband in the video. Vampires is like dipping into Tangerine Dream's Near Dark soundtrack with gothic basslines. Safe Tonight is an MNEK collaboration and is slinky pop. The album might be her best ever if she kept the momentum up but it tapers off a bit on the last two tracks, though Mountains has grown on me since my first review posting. It's her best since Two Suns. Charles Scott IV is the main (co-)producer, he seems to specialise in soundtracks. 9/10 - album of the year so far.

From 36 hits, this is only Charli's 5th number one! :jaw: Boom Clap, Need Ur Luv (a song that briefly looked like a single), Boys and the Vroom Vroom EP being the previous. I got the CD. I wish they didn't hide her voice so much (Thoughts is the most guilty culprit). And the things i didn't like about Pop 2 are here - the sub-rap of Click is just another waste of Kim Petras' abilities, does Tommy Cash usually sound like a mental asylum escapee? The only "good" thing about Click is the humungous fart noise at the end. I don't get the logic of calling an album after yourself but smothering yourself in other people's sounds? Shake It is better than Click but may as well be a mixtape track from seven years ago, she has as much presence on it as Malcolm McLaren did back in the eighties. Dare i say it but she should have kept Sophie and had less AG Cook. The Vroom Vroom EP was exceptional. She should have the confidence to release a full solo record, not "me and my mates".
The things i love are Cross You Out (sounds immense on a proper stereo), Gone, Warm, White Mercedes (a mainstream pop song trying to pretend it isn't), Official which is lovely and bare (proof that you shouldn't hide her voice or make it sound "robotic" too often). I like Silver Cross but it seems a waste of potential. It has interesting lyrics but the melody and production let it down - it is literally rushing toward the end of the song like they can't wait to end it! A song with that weighty a title needed a weightier sound. Next Level Charli isn't really that but it's a good primer.
I Don't Wanna Know is also good - a power ballad pretending it isn't one, it's very Hannah Diamond. I'm still not sold on Blame as i find it pointless. February 2017 is weirdly abrupt like she felt it TOO personal and couldn't go any further but it's nice. 2099 is a very odd choice for a video - it doesn't really have a melody though the overall futuristic sound is good. 1999 sounds out of place on this album. And if that's here, why isn't Boys?
I don't think this is as great as Number 1 Angel or Sucker (both amazing albums/sets). Or Kim Petras' Clarity. 8/10. :cry:

The Hoff covers The Jesus and Mary Chain! His 3rd and biggest hit on my chart. This grat is better than the album's lead single Open Your Eyes (both it and Lords Of The New Church original are a bit naff). The album will (probably) chart next week.
