As Same Love wowed the Grammy Awards with multiple weddings and The Weather Girls raced up UK iTunes because of a homophobic politician, my attention was drawn to this gay anthem (possibly the first?). Originally recorded in 1975 by Valentino but maximised for the dancefloor by Carl Bean in 1977 the song was a club hit both times. This version was remixed in the mid-eighties and made even better and the track has featured in a cult gay film covered by Jimmy Somerville. Lady Gaga should be shown the door by this, quite frankly - make a Facebook campaign for this, not It's Raining Men. Bean is now a minister for a gay friendly church.

"Our Father, who art in Heaven. Sullied be thy name." Was watching the film Good Vibrations (about the Northern Irish label that introduced The Undertones) and this was mentioned in it. Self-written and released in 1972, the actor orated this powerful poem from the perspective of an angry God about the then fresh-brewing troubles in Northern Ireland. This is a revelation, MacArthur Park was a classic but this is something else entirely. Obviously it had no coverage in UK at the time and seems to have only been released overseas - as a single - but it was an album track.

So i was just thinking i hadn't heard from Toni in a while so i Wikied her again. I discovered she'd done several tracks with some composer producers - one of which is out to buy and others are made purely for TV promo purposes. Universal Music have kindly made these tracks available to stream. The clear highlight is this intense rocker that was used in a promo for The Vampire Diaries last year. In case you don't know (and heaven knows i've tried to promote them on here over the years!) Toni was in pre-Garbage electro-indie rockers Curve (she's the one on the right), Dowd is the composer producer on the left - she's worked with INXS, William Orbit, Tiffany Page and Beth Rowley.

Estonia's entry for Eurovision is a Loreen-ish dance-pop song. Much better IMO, the beat is better for a start. Euphoria only got to #34 on my chart. This is the first ESC song to make my top 5 since 2010 when three did - the highest being Estonia's Siren by Malcolm Lincoln.

UK synth band fronted by Madeline Poncia - most well known as the girlfriend of Architects singer Sam Carter. This amazing track (the bass and synth lines make it as well as the soaring melody and aching vocal) was on Radio One's BBC Introducing playlist two years ago - i must have missed this video by literally days. It's a free download (yes, they're GIVING THIS AWAY!!??!!). They're named after the Siouxsie and The Banshees cover of The Beatles song as Madeline is a huge fan of Siouxsie, as well as Depeche Mode.

An incredible slice of anguished soul-rock that namechecks a recent acclaimed sci-fi film in the title and samples Charlie Chaplin's to-the-audience speech in his satire film The Great Dictator. Becomes Nutini's first hit since the first Jenny Don't Be Hasty got to 38 in 2006. I like him when he rocks out but most of his work is way too soft and second-hand. This and Cherry Blossom on the new album far outstrip the rest. See Ben Harper for a better example of an artist who blends retro rock and soul styles.

Far too many boring duets with uninteresting males, too.

Quality retro soul that is just a bit too long and bland in places. She's had trouble convincing people to buy her albums but this looks like being one of her biggest in UK despite people stealing it WEEKS AGO *tut tut*. That's not a reason to justify it so don't get ideas - think how much bigger it would be if those leaks HADN'T happened. A spoof girlgroup put together for Jonathan King's follow-up film Vile Pervert: The Sequel WATCH (includes making of footage and group song info-intros which i've time-linked). They've released four singles, two of the others chart lower down. This one is an original produced by former Culture Club producer Steve Levine, which King says was submitted for UK at Eurovision but was a day late for the deadline (and Slovenia turned it down for being political). How much of this is true or part of the satire i don't know but it's far better than that Molly rubbish. A take on fickleness in fandom - which has its own twist in that the guy who played all the instruments on it - YouTube star Tom Milsom - is at the centre of a new abuse scandal that also involves hitmaker Alex Day. See here for all links on the events and here for more detail including Milsom's deleted Tweets. Many former fans are "over" them for sure. The author of the novel The Fault In Your Stars (from which Charli's Boom Clap comes from the film adaptation) is involved by proxy as it's his and his brother's record label that has a roster full of underage sex cases. King makes no comment about any of this in VP:TS as Alex and Tom are his friends (he claims to have some involvement in Day's Forever Yours Christmas hit). Let me be clear here, i'm not condoning sexual abuse of minors here or suggesting King had anything to with these new cases - King himself denies his original charges and puts very good reasons forth in both Vile Pervert films - he also has support from Stephen Fry, Boy George, Ricardo Autobahn of Cuban Boys, journalist Rod Liddle and Neil and Christine Hamilton - among others. The Hamiltons exchanged calls with King on Friday upon the news of Max Clifford being sentenced - Clifford was partly responsible for engineering the abuse allegations against King which is a main focus of Vile Pervert: The Sequel.
So yeah, there are numerous fascinating social reasons to explore here - or just a funny, cute pop song. Take your pick, or most likely ignore it and think me mad. :lol: :oops: :cry:  :wink: Will it go to #1 in Eurovision Week next week?

I strongly disagree with Navi's statement that they are tarnishing the Blondie legacy. Even if you think it doesn't represent the sound of a band and should be credited to Debbie (i would argue there IS a band sound on here, albeit not as much as before) the album still contains absolute stormers that rank with many of their best. They just haven't picked representative singles - they rarely have since No Exit.
And as no-one made a post on it here - i found out through John (NothingFails) on Facebook - RIP the great artist and Alien creature creator HR Giger - here's an overlooked vid he did for Debbie (not Backfired but the one that sounds like Kate Bush, Now I Know You Know). :cry:

I really don't like the bland sub-Florence of her last two singles so it was with some relief that her long-awaited album contained plenty of what i used to love her for. There are a couple of other bland icky moments but this is largely impressive slightly wrought pop. She's not quite a proper "artiste" though. You get the sense she's reaching for Kate Bush but she's sort of stuck in the Hazel O'Connor set. Even Liam Howe (so good with Marina) can't do much to help her. Not glorious yet but may be one day!

The best Christian worship song since Hosanna by Brooke Fraser and Hillsong United. Big gutsy vocal, big gutsy epic blues and celtic-flecked rock sound - it could be the backing to a Game Of Thrones trailer. Though JC is the only one on this throne.

This p*sses on Courtney Love's recent weak single from a great height. There used to be four but only three appear on the upcoming album - a new fourth member (pictured on the right) is playing with them on live shows.

1 NEW Moulettes - Constellations STREAM
A stunning set of world / pop / folk / rock songs. Both thoroughly modern and electric while infused with the traditions of the music they come from. As well as Arthur Brown and Emma Richardson, the album features Herbie Flowers (known for work with Bowie), Blaine Harrison from Mystery Jets and The Unthanks.
Album turned up in the midweek top 30 - to everyone's surprise! Seems they've been exercising a concerted top 40 chart campaign through various physical outlets. Doesn't look like it will hang on but a top 50 is due and i for one will buy their music in the future.
2 NEW Kyla La Grange - Cut Your Teeth STREAM
And this set of synth/torch pop is the best of its kind since the last Florence and much better than Foxes so it's a shame radio is ignoring her. :cry: Also a lot better than her guitar-based debut which is lower down this week.
