Never really took to instrumentals - they somehow lacked something - although The Shadows were best at them.
When I first became interested in music in the 70s there didn;'t seem to be as many of the genre.

There was a brief period between rock and beat groups where there was a vacuum in which all sorts of stuff tried to take control. Trad jazz for a while was the biggest thing in Britain and the likes of Dave Brubeck and Stan Getz were developing the album side of things Stateside. Instrumentals were much bigger in the US - The Ventures, Santo & Johnny, The Surfaris, Sandy Nelson and so on all scoring big hits, and Dick Dale and Link Wray proving hugely influential.

You mentioned Santo & Johnny, they entered my chart on 2nd April 1960 with "Teardrop", the one that was only one week at #50 in the UK. I'm too late for Sleepwalk but when I heard it I immediately though "I wonder if this influenced Albatross" and looked it up and found it was indeed the track that had influenced it.

11 Elvis Presley - A Mess Of Blues (5wks 23-13-10-11-11) 12 Elvis Presley - The Girl Of My Best Friend (6wks 17-7-4-4-7-12) 13 Shirley Bassey - As Long As He Needs Me (2wks 14-13) 14 Brenda Lee - I'm Sorry (13wks 17-11-7-3-2-1-1-2-3-7-8-10-14) 15 Anita Bryant - In My Little Corner Of The World (4wks 25-19-17-15) 16 Bobby Rydell - Volare (Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu) (3wks 28-21-16) 17 Sam Cooke - Chain Gang (2wks 30-17) 18 Donnie Brooks - Mission Bell (7wks 24-24-26-24-22-19-18) 19 Jackie Wilson - A Woman A Lover A Friend (5wks 24-20-16-12-19) 20 Rolf Harris - Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport (2wks 28-20)

The King of Rock'n'Roll (completely) grabs the top spot. But it is girl power all the way with my three very different new entries... a USA #39 (C&W #2) song written by Hal Blair, Skeeter Davis, and Don Robertson as an answer song to Hank Locklin's "Please Help Me, I'm Falling" by the country artist most famous for SAW & Sonia butchering her USA #2 from 1962; the "Queen of Rockabilly" USA #37 & UK #32 hit cover of an 1957 Elvis album track; and the (probably final) return of the original Disney Mousekeeter on this ridiculous catchy calypso ukulele USA #11 teen anthem.

It's one of those mad things that The Shadows sans Cliff produced some of the most cutting-edge and downright fantastic tracks of the early 60s, yet with him produced stuff so bland Sam Smith will probably end up covering them. Such is popular demand.

Hard to believe The Drifters were going away back in 1960. I can remember a series of big hits in the 70s when I was young.
Much preferred Cliff's Nine Times to Tease.

Hard to believe The Drifters were going away back in 1960. I can remember a series of big hits in the 70s when I was young. The Drifters were in existence in 1952. In terms of an ever changing fluid line up they made the Sugababes look like U2... This was their first million selling USA hit & R&B #1 from 1953 featuring the lead vocals of original lead singer Clyde McPhatter:
