In the UK there is a double A-side "At The Club"/"Saturday Night At The Movies". The latter has already been a hit on this chart, the former therefore charts on its own.

At present the Beatles are level with Elvis Presley on 6 number ones and so if this one gets to the top they will pass him. This was also their 7th UK #1. Of course it's a bit unfair on Elvis given my chart only started in 1960. (Maybe one day I'll go back and do the 1950s too).
We have also an entry for Herman's Hermits that reached #1 in the USA but was not released as a single in the UK. The Righteous Brothers had more than 2 hits, apparently... and down at #38, it feels a bit dated singing about the Twist and Watusi etc. takes us back to 1962... and indeed it's a cover but they added a bit of their own - the "na-na-na" chant which was retained in Wilson Pickett's cover and also sampled by Ini Kamoze in "Here Comes The Hotstepper", just in case it sounds familiar to you and you can't place it.

Yet another #1 for the Beatles.
The highest entry for Jackie Trent was co-written with Tony Hatch, who has written two NM#1s thus far but in the UK this song became his first #1 (his only #1?) where it remained on top for just 1 week, the 7th single to do so in 1965, and that was up to May. (Go Now, Tired Of Waiting For You, It's Not Unusual, Concrete & Clay, The Minute You're Gone and King Of The Road were the first 6). You'll have a hard time finding the song at #25. It's not on Spotify or Youtube.

-- ( 29 ) Stranger In Town - Del Shannon (#10) -- ( 30 ) Catch The Wind - Donovan (#18) -- ( 32 ) Come See - Major Lance (#25) -- ( 34 ) Hawaii Tattoo - Waikikis (#4) -- ( 37 ) All Over The World - Francoise Hardy (#22) -- ( 39 ) People Get Ready - Impressions (#6) -- ( 40 ) I Don't Want To Go On Without You - Moody Blues (#33) -- ( -- ) Dream On Little Dreamer - Perry Como -- ( -- ) I Do Love You - Billy Stewart
As the Beatles remain at #1, Herman's Hermits move to #2 behind them with what is now their biggest hit on this chart. Meanwhile the Beach Boys get a high entry with "Help Me Rhonda". They've had many big hits, their biggest so far "I Get Around" peaking at #2. No number ones yet, but maybe this will be their first.
Bob Dylan was mentioned in 1963 when Peter Paul & Mary took his song "Blowing In the Wind" to #1, so he has reached #1 as a songwriter. They also reached #7 with this song "The Times They Are A-Changing" in 1964. Now finally Bob Dylan enters with a song that includes in its lyrics a very good piece of advice (or command) "Don't wear sandals...". (I remember the first time I heard this song I thought, did he really sing that? But yes, he does).
Yet another classic Drifters song (wow they had so many) and the classic anthem "Wooly Bully" makes up a strong list. The classic "Iko Iko" only scrapes in near the bottom though. One of the songs in the ukulele songbook and it only has 2 chords. So that and the Clapping Song (now going down, at #11 this week) provided two hits for the Belle Stars. We won't be getting "Sign Of The Times" anytime soon though here. That was an original song they wrote themelves...

8 May 1965:
1 ( 1 ) Ticket To Ride - Beatles < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) Help Me Rhonda - Beach Boys 3 ( 2 ) Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter - Herman's Hermits (#2[1]) 4 ( 9 ) Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan 5 ( 10 ) Come On Over To My Place - Drifters 6 ( 3 ) At The Club - Drifters (#3) 7 ( 13 ) Wooly Bully - Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs 8 ( 8 ) Where Are You Now (My Love) - Jackie Trent 9 ( 6 ) Bumble Bee - Searchers (#6) 10 ( 4 ) Here Comes The Night - Them (#1[3])

31 ( -- ) Back In My Arms Again - Supremes 32 ( 33 ) We're Gonna Make It - Little Milton 33 ( -- ) Just A Little - Beau Brummels 34 ( 24 ) I'll Be Doggone - Marvin Gaye (#19) 35 ( 32 ) Land of 1000 Dancers - Cannibal & The Headhunters (#31) 36 ( 26 ) When I'm Gone - Brenda Holloway (#13) 37 ( 23 ) The Race Is On - Jack Jones (#4) 38 ( -- ) That's Why I'm Crying - Ivy League 39 ( 27 ) It's Growing - Temptations (#16) 40 ( -- ) Crying In The Chapel - Elvis Presley

-- ( -- ) The Entertainer - Tony Clarke
The Beatles hold on as Herman's Hermits couldn't make it, and nor could the Beach Boys but the latter stand a chance next week. The Drifters fall from #3 to #6 but also climb from #10 to #5 to have side-by-side hits, whilst Bob Dylan's #4 peak here equals his highest chart position in the modern era but I know in the retro era he's pretty much certain to beat that. (Not necessarily with this song).
Among the entries, Tom Jones's latest hit namechecks a biblical character whose name will play a much bigger role in a later hit. Elvis Presley's return to UK #1 only scrapes in narrowly here. A few weeks ago when the chart was only a top 30 that would simply have flopped.

The Beach Boys finally get to #1 on this chart, and possibly they will do so more times. This song also reached #1 in the USA. (Both the UK and US chart had a high turnover of #1s in 1965).
Sandie Shaw gets the highest entry with a single that got to #1 in the UK, her second to do so. It was written by Chris Andrews who wrote a lot of her songs, but this was the only one of those that reached #1.
Freddie's dance became popular in the USA. Chubby Checker also released a Freddie song. That might chart next week...

Sandie Shaw gets her 2nd #1 here with the song that was her 2nd UK #1. We'll have to wait until 1967 to see if that pattern continues.
The Hollies had a UK #1 with the highest new entry of the week. Like the Righteous Brothers, who topped the chart earlier this year, they would eventually get at 2nd #1 a long time later with a re-issue of one of their hits that didn't make the top first time around.
The band entering at #20 are British and featured Ronnie Wood on guitar, and should not be confused with another band due to enter very soon.

Last week we had the Birds enter, this week the more famous Byrds, with a song written by Bob Dylan but embracing the Beatles style of guitar riffs.
Two German instrumentalist / composers in the chart with now Horst Jankowski joining Bert Kaempfert.
Johnny Cash had a #1 in this chart in 1963 with "Ring Of Fire", probably better known than "It Ain't Me Babe" even though this song reached the UK top 30 for him and that one didn't.
Donovan provides some Scottish folk while Bobby Goldsboro continues to show his career didn't simply consist of "Honey" and "Summer (The First Time)"

If it's been a bit slow the last couple of weeks it is because I skipped one week and kept a playlist active for 2 weeks over the weekend that had the festival.
Also the number of entries is rising so it's only 4 weeks per playlist, instead of the usual 5 it was before.

You see what I mean, 14 songs entering the UK or US chart on this week alone. Just as we thought the Byrds may get an extended run on top, there is an immediate challenger as the classic Rolling Stones hit enters at #2. This song entered the chart in the US first, and is not due into the UK chart for about 3 months.
A heart full of soul - and a chart full of birds. Now the Yardbirds getting their 2nd hit, their biggest UK hit which peaked at #2.
Bob Dylan already has a song he wrote at #1, now one he sings on enters at #15. Notably this was covered by the Specials (among others) with the Maggie in that case referring to Margaret Thatcher.
You probably know a lot of Jackie DeShannon's songs because so many of them were covered. "When You Walk In The Room", a hit for the Searchers here, was one of her's originally. "Bette Davis Eyes", a big hit for Kim Carnes in 1981, and "Breakaway", a big hit for Tracey Ullman in 1983 - were also both her songs. And on this chart she gets a hit of her own now.
Of the two "death" songs out this week, the Shangi-Las do enter with their tale of a couple running away, but Dickey Lee's spooky song about a woman and a sweater doesn't make the cut.

No change in the top 2. The highest new entry is by Tom Jones with a song written by Bacherach/David for a new film, scripted by Woody Allen who also stars in it, and also starring Peter Sellers and Peter O'Toole.
Among the other entries this week we have both the Marvellets and the Marvelows. I'd never heard of the latter.

Still no change at #1. The highest new entry is the UK #2 hit for the Fortunes, and following that the original version of "I Want Candy", with its Bo-Diddley beat. Covered by Brian Poole & The Tremeloes for the UK chart, and later by Bow Wow Wow and I think also Melanie C and I can't remember who else...
Not so original here: I'm Henry VIII I Am, an old song dating back to the just before the first world war. This version did entertain the Americans, getting to #1 there.

As the Rolling Stones keep out Tom Jones this week and the Fortunes climb to #3, we get another new entry at #7, this time by the Animals, doing a song written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and originally intended for the Righteous Brothers. That that duo didn't get to record this may have had a knock-on effect in musical history, given what they are about to come out with...
Whilst I dislike the fact that the Dave Clark Five are not on Spotify, that isn't the reason their songs have been performing relatively badly in my chart. I just felt that since Bits & Pieces they haven't been that good - until this one. And looking at their chart positions the British public at the time generally agreed with me. Catch Us If You Can returns them to the UK top 5 and gives them a decent entry here, albeit there is a huge amount of strong music to come out in the next few weeks.

The Rolling Stones get a 5th week at #1, and is the 2nd longest running #1 of the year, behind the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", a song their manager was very keen to promote in the UK. The song threatening to knock the Rolling Stones off now is one written by the same duo that wrote that song - Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil.
The highest entry is an instrumental also recorded by Herb Alpert. It starts slow then picks up. This tune was used at some point in the early 70s with the test card, and that's how I got to know it.

The Animals get their 2nd #1, having topped the chart last year with The House Of The Rising Sun. In the UK, that song was replaced at #1 by the Rolling Stones, whereas now it's a kind of revenge on here as the Animals topple the Stones. Back then the Beatles then ensured the Rolling Stones' run was also just a single week. Perhaps the Beatles can do the same to the Animals now, as "Help" enters at #4.
Entering lower, a duo Sonny & Cher, the latter of whom has also had hits in the modern era. Her only #1 of the modern era was also duetting with a male partner. "I Got You Babe" is unlikely to top the chart due to there being so much strong competition, but we'll see how well it does. There are more great songs entering in the next couple of weeks too.
Down at #30 we see what the Righteous Brothers did end up recording. Of course, 25 years later on, having been used in the film "Ghost" it got a revival and topped the UK chart. Bad enough it knocked the Beautiful South off. But then a scene in Soldier Soldier where the two main characters performed it in a karaoke led to that also being released and keeping the wonderful Pulp off #1. Worse for me than Joe Dolce keeping out Vienna. At least Shaddup You Face was an original track and may have been slightly funny.
In any case, the 3rd highest entry is by someone who may or may not have committed crimes (I believe not, even if he was convicted), but his only crimes against music were perhaps in his own silly recordings. He did great things for music in discovering and promoting other artists.

The mad rush of classic songs we are having at this time. I would say all of the top 7 entries could be seen as classics of the era, and they are all by American acts. The hit by We Five is one of those "Oh, I didn't know it was a cover.." moments, referring to Crispian St Peters' big hit version, which probably won't chart now. At least he may chart with Pied Piper.
One thing I have noticed is that, although the Beatles are indeed getting the most #1s, they are not scoring the biggest hits with it. And thus far, an American act has had the #1 of the year every year, and I suspect this year that will also be the case, and probably 1966 too.
The Miracles high entry is sung and also written by Smokey Robinson, who has also written a #1 for Mary Wells (My Guy) so maybe he can also get one with his own band.
Cher's hit was written by Bob Dylan and there was a rival version by the Byrds.

A strong week. "Help" becomes the 2nd consecutive #1 to stay only one week, and maybe it will be 3 in a row, as the Miracles are under threat from a high entry by Bob Dylan, who like Smokey Robinson before him has been #1 as a songwriter but not yet as a performer.
Another classic, by Wilson Pickett, enters at #11, and potentially this is my strongest top 11 of all time (and certainly so far in the retro era).

Last playlist was 6 weeks, 14 August until 18 September. Current playlist is 5 weeks, 25 September to 23 October
Plan is that the next playlist will be 5 weeks: 30 October until 27 November, regardless of how many songs that is.
Final playlist of 1965 will be 4 weeks, 4 December until 25 December and I will listen to that in the week beginning 18th July and I hope to "score it up" early.
That will mean that I will have completed listening to and scoring up the playlists before the 3 weeks, that begins on 24th July.
During the period after that I will continue to post charts, and will compile the chart of the year for 1965.
There will be no retro playlists during the 3 weeks or during the catch-up period of 3 weeks after, but I will listen to the chart of the year of 1965 at some point.
The resumption of playlists will thus be in September for 4 weeks but will once again be reduced when the festival start, although I might do short ones.
I have realised that I have not yet done sporting achievements of 1965, something I usually put in the topic when I'm halfway through the year. Hopefully I'll do that today.
