Day 2: STEPHEN MAGUIRE 4-10 JAMIE JONES NEIL ROBERTSON 10-3 LIANG WENBO YAN BINGTAO 10-6 MARTIN GOULD DAVID GILBERT 10-4 CHRIS WAKELIN Stephen Maguire goes out in the 1st round for the seventh time in nine years. He led 3-0 against Jamie Jones but Jones won 10 of the next 11 frames to progress. I saw several pundits tipping Jones to win his quarter of the draw (and therefore reach the semis) at 33/1 on Friday. Robertson looked good against Liang, cementing his position as one of the favourites. Gilbert's win against Wakelin was much needed after a very poor season. Yan versus Gould was closer than the scoreline suggests and on another day, could've gone Gould's way. Anthony McGill 5-4 Ricky Walden John Higgins 3-4 Tian Pengfei

Day 4: DING JUNHUI 9-10 STUART BINGHAM MARK ALLEN 10-2 LYU HAOTIAN JACK LISOWSKI 10-9 ALI CARTER Barry Hawkins 6-3 Matthew Selt Judd Trump 7-2 Liam Highfield The tie of the 1st round saw 2015 champion Stuart Bingham edge out Ding Junhui in a deciding frame. The players were forced off at 9-9 after running out of time this afternoon and had to return this evening once Mark Allen had completed an easy victory over Lyu Haotian. The exits of Ding and Lyu mean Yan Bingtao is the sole Chinese player left in the tournament. The first final frame decider of the tournament came this morning when Jack Lisowski came from 9-8 down to beat Ali Carter. It is only the second match Lisowski has won at the Crucible. 2nd round draw: Ronnie O'Sullivan v Anthony McGill Stuart Bingham v Jamie Jones John Higgins v Mark Williams/Sam Craigie Mark Allen v Mark Selby/Kurt Maflin Neil Robertson v Jack Lisowski Barry Hawkins/Matthew Selt v Kyren Wilson Shaun Murphy/Mark Davis v Yan Bingtao David Gilbert v Judd Trump/Liam Highfield

Day 5 & 6: JUDD TRUMP 10-4 LIAM HIGHFIELD BARRY HAWKINS 10-3 MATTHEW SELT MARK WILLIAMS 10-4 SAM CRAIGIE SHAUN MURPHY 10-7 MARK DAVIS MARK SELBY 10-1 KURT MAFLIN The 1st round ends with four former champions and one former finalist making it through to the last 16. It means only two qualifiers progressed through the 1st round (and that play each other in Round 2), the first time the number has been that low since 2009. Judd Trump progressing to the 2nd round means he is guaranteed to finish the season as world no.1. Any of O'Sullivan, Robertson, Selby, Wilson, Murphy or Higgins could still finish at no.2 2nd round: Ronnie O'Sullivan 4-4 Anthony McGill Neil Robertson 5-3 Jack Lisowski 2nd round line-up: Ronnie O'Sullivan v Anthony McGill Stuart Bingham v Jamie Jones John Higgins v Mark Williams Mark Allen v Mark Selby Neil Robertson v Jack Lisowski Barry Hawkins v Kyren Wilson Shaun Murphy v Yan Bingtao David Gilbert v Judd Trump

Day 7: RONNIE O'SULLIVAN 12-13 ANTHONY McGILL The champion's reign comes to an end after a dramatic match. McGill led 10-5 but O'Sullivan won six frames in a row to lead 11-10 and it looked like McGill's chance had gone. However, he levelled at 11-11, only for Ronnie to take the next. McGill knocked in a superb break of 136 to take the match to a decider. A kick left Ronnie out of position and McGill made a clearance of 85 to book his place in the quarter-finals, where he'll face either Stuart Bingham or Jamie Jones. John Higgins 3-5 Mark Williams Neil Robertson 9-7 Jack Lisowski Barry Hawkins 7-9 Kyren Wilson Several players have adopted the break-off shot that Mark Williams has been playing recently, whereby they play the cue ball off the top cushion into the pack of reds, rather than directly into the pack and sending the cue ball back up to baulk. The thinking seems to be that today's players are so good when it comes to long potting, they're leaving their opponent a chance of there's a red free off the break. Stephen Hendry also pointed out this evening that by playing off the cushion, it's far less likely that the black will be out of commission, making it easier to build a break for the player who gets the first chance.

A great win for McGill. I thought he'd blown it when O'Sullivan came back but he composed himself and got the win.
I've just watched a clip with Steve Davis and Alan McManus discussing Mark Williams' break-off shot and Davis made the same comment about the black.

The cushion first break off reminded me of the way players breaked off in the Pocket Money round in Big Break.
It's unusual but I suppose it adds another variation to the game but it'll be interesting to see if there are more break off techniques being introduced by players in the future.

Day 10: STUART BINGHAM 13-6 JAMIE JONES MARK ALLEN 7-13 MARK SELBY SHAUN MURPHY 13-7 YAN BINGTAO DAVID GILBERT 8-13 JUDD TRUMP Quarter-finals: Anthony McGill v Stuart Bingham Mark Williams v Mark Selby Neil Robertson v Kyren Wilson Shaun Murphy v Judd Trump A stellar line-up for the quarter-finals with the last eight having won 105 ranking titles between them (that number would've been 140 if O'Sullivan had beaten McGill), including 10 world titles. Only Wilson and McGill have never won the title and McGill is the only player remaining who's never played in the final. If Bingham beats McGill, it will be the third year in a row that a qualifier has reached the semi-finals (McGill last year and Gary Wilson in 2018). The last qualifier to reach the final was Ding Junhui in 2016, after beating a fellow qualifier, Alan McManus, in the semis. No qualifier has won the title since Shaun Murphy in 2005. In terms of rankings, Judd Trump is well clear at the top. Ronnie O'Sullivan is hanging on at 2 but Selby and Robertson will go ahead of him if they reach the final. Wilson or Murphy can go ahead of him by winning the tournament, meaning any one of five can still end the season ranked 2nd. The other three on the tournament can finish as high as 5 by winning the tournament, depending on how other results go. Bingham's run in this tournament means he will start next season back inside the top 16. If Williams wins the tournament he will take back the record of longest gap between first and last world titles in the modern era, which Ronnie took off him last year. It's 21 years since his first world title. Ronnie set a new record of 19 years last year, beating the record Williams set in 2018 by a year. If Murphy or Robertson wins the title, they would set a new record for longest gap between first and second world titles. Murphy's title came 16 years ago, Robertson's 11. The current record is 10, held by Alex Higgins.

After winning a Mark derby, Mark Selby goes straight into another one. Before the tournament began it was actually possible for Lyu Haotian or Kurt Maflin to win the tournament only playing against players called Mark.

Day 11: Anthony McGill 9-7 Stuart Bingham Mark Williams 2-6 Mark Selby Neil Robertson 8-8 Kyren Wilson Shaun Murphy 4-4 Judd Trump
Selby takes an early lead over Williams but the other three quarter-finals are finely poised.
One thing I forgot to mention yesterday: Bingham v Murphy is the only possible final match-up that would be a repeat of a previous final (2015). Any other combination would be a first-time Crucible final, partly due to the fact that between them, Higgins and O'Sullivan have appeared in 11 of the last 14 finals. This is the first time since 1994 that the quarter-finals don't feature either O'Sullivan or Higgins - Higgins didn't make his Crucible debut until 1995.

Day 12: ANTHONY McGILL 12-13 STUART BINGHAM MARK WILLIAMS 3-13 MARK SELBY NEIL ROBERTSON 8-13 KYREN WILSON SHAUN MURPHY 13-11 JUDD TRUMP An all-English line-up in the semi-finals after some very different quarter-final encounters. Mark Selby dominated Mark Williams to clinch victory with a session to spare and must now be the favourite after world no.1 Judd Trump lost a thriller against Shaun Murphy. Murphy led 10-6 going into the final session but Trump fought back to level at 11-11 but Murphy managed to get over the line. It's his first semi-final appearance since he reached the final in 2015. The same is true for Stuart Bingham who overcame Anthony McGill in a deciding frame. Kyren Wilson won all five frames against Neil Robertson this morning to reach the semis for the third time in four years. Robertson's poor Crucible record continues, having reached the single table setup just once since he won the title in 2010. The 11 frames Selby has conceded in his first three matches equals the record at the Crucible. The lowest for the whole tournament is Steve Davis' 23 in 1989.
