I remember seeing some snooker being shown on the FreeSports TV channel not that long ago but I'm pretty sure it was shared coverage by Eurosport. You're right, the most recent Championship League was shown on FreeSports. Not sure if the coverage was shared with Eurosport but I know some of Eurosport's coverage is sometimes shown on Quest as well as the channels are owned by the same company. That was the other TV channel I was thinking of - Quest!
Yeah I think Quest does showed coverage of the four nations tournaments - the Scottish Open / English Open / Welsh Open / NI Open

I'd agree about those three commentators - all very good. John Virgo, on the other hand, gets more irritating every year. Did you see Hazel Irvine's interview with Shaun Murphy's family? How many times will their little boy be shown that as he grows up? I caught the tail end of that interview and thought it was brilliant. "He's got plenty of trophies already..."
I thought hearing Judd Trump doing pundit/comms was quite refreshing, especially on his insight of the players. Same again with Jack Lisowski, although his punditry could be improved but again it was insightful. Joe Perry should get a mention too.
Agree with Virgo - The "Where's the X ball going?" is getting tiresome.
I still think Rob Walker is a strange choice as commentator too.
Is he the one who interviewed Ronnie O'Sullivan after he lost. If so, he was awful. He seemed to be trying to get O'Sullivan to say something patronising about Anthony McGill. Thankfully, O'Sullivan was far too shrewd and experienced to fall for it.

Yeah that's the fella - I think he did most, if not all, of the interviews of the players who lost straight after the matches for the BBC and the winners interview on the WST Facebook page. As well as being the announcer at the start. Both of which I don't mind him doing.
His commentating I'm not too keen on, it's like he tries to finds a moment whilst talking to show off what he's researched.
"Shawn Murphy here facing a tricky safety shot. A similar safety shot to the one he played 2 year ago at the exact same table in the same venue..."
I think Ronnie like to have some banter with Rob when he's interviewing him. I remember the cue action responses he gave last year at the Worlds.

Been watching the World Seniors and it feels like he's contractually obliged now to say it if the cue ball goes anywhere near the pocket, and at times it's been rather half hearted. Tbh him working with Patsy Fagan (who must admit haven't heard of before) was particularly difficult, especially as Fagan continually kept on saying John every time he spoke...That said Fagan was better today for the Jimmy White match and offered a bit of insight, still don't think it would have made much difference had it been JV on his own though. Rob Walker did the last QF last night alongside Dennis Taylor and seemed very much like the 2nd commentator. Speaking of the World Seniors, first time I've watched and its been interesting so will try to watch the Crucible event regularly from now on. Thursday evening saw last couple of frames of Hendry's 3-0 win over Fagan. Flattering win for Hendry who was all over the place in the 2nd frame and should have lost it. Friday afternoon saw Dennis Taylor lose 3-0 to Barry Pinches. He revealed afterwards that it was his last competitive match, think because he didn't have the time to practice anymore. It really did show as he didn't pot many balls, and I suspect had it not been his last event he may have skipped it altogether. At the end they did a presentation with the other players and officials watching on which he seemed a bit embarrassed about. Rob Walker got surprisingly emotional! Saw the first frame of Jimmy White's win over Tony Knowles in the evening. Yesterday evening saw White's 4-1 win over Darren Morgan in the quarters. As he said in the interview afterwards a flattering win as he stole a couple of frames which Morgan looked like winning. The frame that Morgan won saw him hit a break of 134 the highest break of the tournament (assuming that wasn't beaten in the 2nd semi today). That was followed by a dramatic win in the quarters for David Lilley over Ken Doherty in a deciding frame in a match that didn't finish until almost midnight. With Lilley 2-0 up and in the balls it looked like it would be over pretty quickly but Doherty stole that frame and came from 3-1 down to force the decider (which Dennis Taylor correctly predicted when Doherty was struggling in the first few frames). Surprisingly candid interview from Lilley afterwards, pretty much all he talked about was how poorly he'd played and how he pretty much felt sorry for Doherty that he'd knocked him out playing like that. Today saw Jimmy White beat Igor Figueiredo (a new name for me) 4-1 in the first semi final. Jimmy was good but didn't get the hype around Igor at all (there was a comment online today tipping him to win the title). Apart from the frame he won he really did struggle. There's also been debate about whether this event should be over 50s rather than over 40s, an interesting point when you've got players in their 40s playing in the main championship at the Crucible. Must admit I do find it hard to understand why Igor and Lilley are playing when apart from being in their 40s they've seemingly never played at the Crucible before. Hope Jimmy can beat Lilley in the final tonight.

I would agree that the age limit should be raised to 50, rather than 40. We just had a World Championship final between two players that are almost 40 themselves. Players can now only compete in the Seniors events if they are ranked outside the top 64 on the Main Tour. That rule was brought in after Mark Williams won it at a canter a few years ago and then admitted he'd already spent the prize money before even playing the event as he was that confident he would win.
Igor Figueiredo has been on the tour for a few years now. Originally from Brazil but now living in London. He's actually the highest ranked main tour player playing in this year's tournament and has qualified for the tour again through his position on the one-year list. He was a replacement in this event as Tony Drago, Cliff Thorburn and Bob Chaperon were all unable to take part due to to Covid/quarantine restrictions.
I know less about David Lilley. He had a lot of success as an amateur but didn't make it onto the main tour until two years ago. He went on huge verbal rant at a referee during a seniors qualifying event a few months ago and came across as not a very nice person at all so I hope Jimmy absolutely smashes him but it's not looking good so far.

3-3 now. White looking for another comeback win. In last year's final he came from 4-0 down to beat Ken Doherty 5-4.

Igor Fig won shot of the championship for his plant double against Hendry. A worthy winner imo. Discovered something else about him last night but may PM you about that.
White only started playing 3-0 down. The seventh frame was the key, was very scrappy killing the momentum and fluency he had and he really should have won it. Interesting that Lilley mentioned Stan Chambers in his speech. Mike Dunn mentioned in commentary in one of the earlier matches that he died last week as he was well known in the North East (and Dunn is from there too). Have you heard of Stan Chambers? And who is Mike Dunn, not heard of him before?

I have to admit I'm not familiar with Stan Chambers but he was clearly highly regarded in North East snooker circles.
Mike Dunn is a player from Redcar who spent 20+ years on the tour before retiring last year. He played at the Crucible once and reached the semis of one of the Chinese tournaments but was generally seen as a typical journeyman pro. I think he's gone into coaching now and I was quite impressed with him on commentary.
Intrigued about the Figueiredo gossip...

Meanwhile, the deadline for Q School was today. Hopefully we'll see the entry list soon and see which players who have dropped off the tour are aiming to come straight back. We already know Alan McManus isn't - will any others decide against it this year? It's also good seeing some names from the past taking part. I remember a few people in the past saying Darren Morgan should try and get back on the tour, especially after reaching the semi-finals of the Riga Masters five years ago, but he's never tried Q School.

I hope Mike Dunn gets used in the future, was one of the better commentators that were used.
Has Alan McManus now officially retired then? I did notice how prominent he was on the BBC coverage during the World Championship.

I did notice how prominent he was on the BBC coverage during the World Championship. Yes, McManus announced his retirement after losing in the World Championship qualifiers and dropping out of the top 64. I really like him as a commentator and I'm glad BBC are using him more. I actually think, person-for-person, ITV has the best line-up now, with McManus, Hendry and Neal Foulds all featuring prominently. I prefer Hazel Irvine over Jill Douglas, but Douglas is better than the other BBC presenters. The only bad thing about ITV's coverage is the annoying Phil Yates. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mike Dunn ended up doing a bit of commentary for Eurosport at some point.

Saw the first frame of Jimmy White's win over Tony Knowles in the evening. I suspect Dennis's focus is on the pool table now, as the table is smaller and the pockets are bigger.
I did catch him playing in one of the random pool tournaments they showed on the FreeSports channel a couple of years back. Can't remember the scoreline but it was a close game against a player less than half his age.
I don't know if that was a one off or whether he is actively playing pool.

WST has today filled one of the gaps in next season's calendar by announcing the first Turkish Masters, which will take place in Antalya in September. Turkey will become the 23rd country (counting the home nations separately) to stage a ranking event.

The British Open will return to the calendar for the first time since 2004 after it was announced as one of the additional ranking events for the 21/22 season. It will take place in August and will be the second event of the season after the Championship League.
The tournament was a ranking event for 20 years before it was dropped from the calendar. At one point, it was the last tournament before the World Championship but was later moved to a slot early in the season. John Higgins won the last edition of the event, which most recently took place in Brighton. This year's venue is still to be confirmed.
Past British Open champions: 1985 - Silvino Francisco 1986 - Steve Davis 1987 - Jimmy White 1988 - Stephen Hendry 1989 - Tony Meo 1990 - Bob Chaperon 1991 - Stephen Hendry 1992 - Jimmy White 1993 - Steve Davis 1994 - Ronnie O'Sullivan 1995 - John Higgins 1996 - Nigel Bond 1997 - Mark Williams 1998 - John Higgins 1999(1) - Fergal O'Brien 1999(2) - Stephen Hendry 2000 - Peter Ebdon 2001 - John Higgins 2002 - Paul Hunter 2003 - Stephen Hendry 2004 - John Higgins

Updated locations for some of next season's tournaments:
English Open - Milton Keynes Scottish Open - Glasgow World Grand Prix - Coventry Shoot Out - Leicester Players Championship - Wolverhampton Welsh Open - Newport (Celtic Manor) Tour Championship - Llandudno
MK's Marshall Arena, which held a number of behind closed doors tournaments last season now gets an event in front of a crowd with the English Open confirmed for there. The Scottish Open returns to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow after it had to be played in Milton Keynes last season. Coventry's Ricoh Arena used to be the venue for the Champion of Champions but with that moving to Bolton, Coventry now gets the World Grand Prix, which was previously in Cheltenham, prior to Covid. The Shoot Out seems to move around a bit and will be in Leicester for the first time, having previously been in Watford in the last non-Covid season. The Players Championship also has a new venue yet again with Wolverhampton taking over from Southport. The Welsh Open remains at Celtic Manor, while the Tour Championship returns to its former home at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.
Tournaments with locations still to be confirmed: Championship League British Open European Masters China Open Gibraltar Open
plus a number of the qualifying events

Last 16 at Q School 1: Peter Lines v Lee Shanker Ian Burns v David Lilley Fraser Patrick v Lei Peifan James Cahill v Bai Langning Oliver Brown v Michael Georgiou Jackson Page v Sean Harvey Mitchell Mann v Duane Jones Yuan Sijun v Sydney Wilson
The four quarter-final winners will earn a two-year tour card. There are 14 tour cards in total up for grabs at Q School.
11 of the last 16 are players who have just been relegated from the tour. Of the other five, three are former tour players. Only Shanker and Harvey have never held tour cards. Shanker has played in Q School before with very little success. Harvey has played in some professional tournaments as an amateur, including this year's Shoot Out, when he was a late replacement.
