52 Sowing The Seeds Of Love - Tears For Fears
After quite a long break Tears For Fears return with this Beatlesque song. It even has a bit of a weird psychedelic video. This was another huge worldwide hit peaking at #2 in the US and #5 in the UK.

51 The Downtown Lights – The Blue Nile
Speaking of long breaks..The Blue Nile finally release a 2nd album and what a record it is. I don't know how many times I played this album as I walked the streets of Edinburgh at 3am. Just perfect night time going home music. There wasn't one song that was as big as 'Tinseltown' on this record but the whole album was just pure class including this lead single. The single only reached #67 but the album 'Hats' entered at #12!

50 Sally Cinnamon - The Stone Roses
Yes I know this song is much older but I only heard it on its 1989 re-issue. It was just a great little single that I know many people actually preferred to anything of 'The Stone Roses'. It would peak at #3 on the Indie chart and #46 in the UK.

49 Mayor Of Simpleton - XTC
Another one of my favourite 80s bands return in 1989 with one of their best ever singles. XTC just were masters at the pop single and never got enough credit. They say they don't know how to right a big hit song but they did just the public didn't get it, just too quirky I guess. It reached #46 in the UK.

48 Eternal Flame – The Bangles
Well I will start by saying that I don't normally listen to this song anymore. This song was my first ever slow dance song and where I kissed the girl I let get away. It was the right decision, very mature for a 17 year old but I can't hear this song without remembering that night. Yes a magical moment and a magical song. This was number one absolutely everywhere. Seriously this other guy, took her away while I was still holding her hand argh! They were together 3 years mind you after that.

47 The Look – Roxette
Ooh glad that's over. Here is the amazing debut hit from Roxette. I loved this so much but again there always seemed to be something off about them which stopped me fully embrace them. Another US chart topper it peaked at #7 here.

45 Scottish Rain – The Silencers
Another song for walk homing after night outs, think I had a lot of music like this in 1989 and being in Skye at the time, there was a lot of Scottish rain. Another epic single that failed to grab the attention of the UK as a whole. The Silencers were still a shared secret with France alone. This reached #71 in the UK.

45 What I Am – Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
A massive radio hit especially on Atalntic 252, it just got into your head such an infectious pop song from Mrs Paul Simon. It really was the sort of song that would always do well in the US but surprisingly was a hit here as well. It peaked at #7 in the US and #31 in the UK. It would later be covered by Tin Tin Out/Emma Bunton of course.

44 All I Want Is You – U2
Another song that reminds me of a girl, common occurrence in 1989, we stayed up most of the night with Rattle & Hum video playing in the background. That was a fun weekend. Anyway one of the most gorgeous songs U2 have ever did and I always stop what i am doing when I hear it anywhere. It reached #4 in the UK.

From the sublime to the ridiculous has never been more true...
43 Love In An Elevator - Aerosmith
After the comeback a few years ago, Aerosmith truly return with the amazing album 'Pump'. It was acceptable in the 80s never more true, as over the top as it comes. It reached #5 in the Us and #13 in the UK.

42 Just Like Heaven – Dinosaur Jr.
We return to the grunge underground with this brilliant cover of The Cure classic. They mess it completely but somehow it still has the same beauty of the original, maybe apart from the roars hehe. also any song with soft toys dancing is ok with me. It reached #78 in the UK.

41 Saturday Night Sunday Morning – The River Detectives
This batch ends with one more nightime walking home song from the brilliantly forgotten The River Detectives. I will use this brilliant clip of the 12" version which I never heard until now, wow chills all over. A band that make me want to cry and so so underrated. I really miss walking home late at night in Edinburgh so much, it was one of my favourite things. This reached #51 in the Uk.

40 Toy Soldiers - Martika
Into the top 40 can't believe we are almost finished with the 80s. We start with the debut single from Martika and a bit different from the bubblegum pop of Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, its a bit sexier and new wave. Also much more hard hitting Martika wrote this herself about a friend suffering from cocaine addiction. It was a US number one and peaked at #5 here.

39 Don't Shed A Tear – Paul Carrack
Next we have a huge radio hit from Paul Carrack, this is by far my favourite song of his but I think the song was far to American for the UK market even though Paul Carrack is English himself. Written by the same guy who has written songs for Pat Benatar it was his biggest solo hit in the US reaching #9. It was released a couple of times in the UK but didn't get any higher than #60.

38 Stand – R.E.M.
First of two songs for REM in this batch, it was a bit of a novelty song especially with the video with silly dances but it failed to really catch on in the UK. It reached #6 in the US, their 2nd top 10 hit there but only #48 here.

37 Patience – Guns N' Roses
First of two songs for Guns n roses in this list,I met by first girlfriend through a love of GunsnRoses and they were definitely my new T Shirt band certainly for most of this summer. Taken from the extras album G N R Lies, this ballad was something we hadn't heard from these guys before and it was a huge hit reaching #4 in the US and #10 in the UK.

36 Let the Day Begin – The Call
As the charts are seeming to include more music I like again or I am liking more music in the charts i don't know but i still have time for new bands. I absolutely loved this song at the time, it was a number one in my chart and another song I think I discovered via Gary Davies. This rock track reached #52 in the US and an infuriating #42 here. The son of the singer would eventually form Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and release this song as a tribute to his dad, it was a pretty good version.

35 Orange Crush – R.E.M.
We keep the alt rock going with a brilliant REM single, by far the stand out track on the 'Green' album. This song is really the template for everything that was great about REM from 1987-1996, they were on the edge of being my favourite band but not quite their yet. They finally break the top 40 in the UK reaching #28 but it wasn't a single in the US but was a modern rock track airplay number one.

34 Fergus Sings The Blues – Deacon Blue
Sorry did I say earlier that Deacon Blue had no great songs left to come, oops. This was the big live favourite of the album and always got the crowd going. Anyway it is still true as this was the 3rd single off the album so not the last really good single. This reached #14 in the UK.

33 Lullaby - The Cure
Controversial, I think many will be saying this really should be in the top 10 but every song in this top 40 is brilliant or has a special meaning to me so its still a great result. I maybe marked it down a little as I wasn't totally into it at the time but now of course I love it. Arguably their best ever single, it is also their biggest hit in the UK reaching #5, it only made #74 in the US maybe a bit too creepy for them.
