Australia somehow win by 2 wickets. A thrilling and entertaining test match but a huge missed opportunity for England.

It's amazing when you win things like this, but utterly deflating when it goes against you. And now there's a mountain to climb to reclaim the ashes, if only we'd had another 50 runs for them to chase which would have ramped up the pressure and meant they couldn't win. A draw and we'd still be in it. Moeen looks nacked, Stokes is crocked and Anderson passed his best (unsurprisingly)?

It was thrilling. Credit also to Australia, for superb tactics on the final day.

What an epic 5 days of cricket. A pity someone had to lose.
Just think had England not declared in the first innings, they could have batted on another 50 minutes to close and added another 40 runs .... and if everything else happened the same as a result ... with the very dodgy thundering 20 minutes on Sunday afternoon resulting in England bowling them out then ... we'd be moaning about it ending up as a draw with Australia 8 wickets down and 40-50 runs short, and we should have declared when Stokes actually did do.
However, I think it is ominous that Australia's World Top 3 batsmen all (relatively) failed, yet England still lost...
Might things have been different had we selected Foakes as wicketkeeper and had Bairstow in the team as an opener instead of Crawley or Duckett? Perhaps maybe we should have selected Rehan Ahmed or Liam Dawson instead of Mooen Ali whose spinning finger(s) could not cope with 5 days of cricket?

Moeen's finger couldn't cope with one day of test cricket. He bowled more than three times as many overs in Australia's 1st innings as he would in a 50-over match.
I think the Bairstow-Foakes debate generally evens itself out. Bairstow will score more runs but Foakes is probably worth a wicket or two per match. The difference is Bairstow is capable of producing something special that can win a match, like we saw regularly last summer.
I think we'll see some rotation of the bowling in the next test. Anderson didn't have a great game (though I'd have still given him a chance with the new ball to try and win the match). Mark Wood may well play at Lord's.

The women's Ashes test at Trent Bridge has followed a similar path to the men's match at Edgbaston. Australia made 473 in their 1st innings. England replied with 463, with Tammy Beaumont become the first woman to hit a double hundred for England in any format. Australia all out for 257 in their 2nd innings so England are chasing 268 to win.
Sophie Ecclestone finishes with match bowling figures of 10-192 from 77 overs. There were a few tongue-in-cheek suggestions that she might be considered to replace Moeen Ali at Lord's...

The West Indies' World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after they lost to the Netherlands in a super over today. It means they must realistically win all 3 super six matches to stand a chance of qualifying.
The Windies made 374-6 but the Dutch managed to tie the scores to force a super over. The Netherlands smashed 30 off the super over, then took 2 Windies wickets to end the match.

Free entry, and the prospect of an exciting finish, especially when England dipped to 99 required with 4 wickets standing. It wasn't to be though, thanks to superb bowling by Ash Gardner.

Perhaps maybe we should have selected Rehan Ahmed or Liam Dawson instead of Mooen Ali whose spinning finger(s) could not cope with 5 days of cricket? Liam Dawson took 6-40 and 6-90, and scored 141 in Hampshire's innings + 61 run victory over Middlesex over the past 2 1/2 days. Four of the Middlesex team have Test caps. Might have attracted the selecter's attention.

Was just about to come here and talk about England's poor effort with the ball today, having run out of ideas when the wicket-tumbling conditions didn't materialise. Then Root takes 2 wickets in an over and the game is back on with Australia 318-5.

Two early wickets for England this morning. Australia 359-7. If England can limit them to under 400, they're well in this game.

England's day but should've been better after throwing some wickets away in stupid fashion in the last session. 278-4.
