England will be praying Jofra Archer stays fit next year. Will he have to play some 4 day county cricket to prove he's still good enough for a Test Match, or will England just pick him automatically ? Looks like they should get a 150 lead unless the pitch starts taking spin tomorrow. He's played plenty of white ball cricket this year so if England feel the talent is still there (and all the signs suggest they do) they'll pick him anyway. England have a one-off test against Zimbabwe then a 5-test series against India next summer so it'll be interesting to see how much Archer plays ahead of the Ashes.

England all out for 358, a first innings lead of 122. Jamie Smith top scored with 111 - his first test century. Due to the slightly different times for today's play after yesterday's rain, Sri Lanka will have about 15 minutes of batting before lunch.

Was a good day all in all (though inevitably waned in the afternoon, as I've found each time I've been to cricket!). Party stand was good craic.

Sri Lanka right back in it, not losing a wicket yet today, reaching 304-6, 182 ahead. Mark Wood won't bowl today due to a thigh injury.

England win by 5 wickets, chasing down 205. Sri Lanka did very well to make a game of it, having looked set for a heavy defeat on more than one occasion during the match.

Mark Wood has been ruled out of the 2nd and 3rd tests against Sri Lanka due to the thigh injury he suffered on Friday. Josh Hull has been called up to the England squad for the 2nd test, though Olly Stone is expected to play in place of Wood.

Olly Stone does indeed replace Mark Wood and achieves the rare feat of his first 4 caps coming against 4 different teams: Ireland, India, New Zealand and now Sri Lanka.

Joe Root reaches his 33rd test hundred, equalling Alistair Cook's record for the most by an England player and equal 10th on the all-time list. England on 254-6.

England 358-7 at the close. Gus Atkinson reached his maiden test 50 and is still there on 74, with Potts supporting him with a useful 20.

Glad to hear that Gus Atkinson has got his first test hundred. No one was expecting this when he came out to bat. Could he bat at Number 6 for England in the future ?

118 off 115 balls and almost three hours at the crease. A terrific innings. England post 427. That didn’t seem feasible at 216-6. Now it’s up to the bowlers.

And the bowlers did their job with Sri Lanka all out for 196, 231 behind England. England didn't enforce the follow-on and are 25-1 at the close after the inevitable early departure of Dan Lawrence.
