Having a bit of a catch up, I'm surprised Rolling Stones went out so early, It's Only Rock And Roll is a good song, surprised at how many rocks songs from 1974 that I like didn't make it into your chart, No
Hall and Oates (Las Vegas Turnaround, She's Gone, When the Morning Comes) Deep Purple (Burn, Might Just Take Your Life) Strawbs (Hero and Heroine, Round and Round) King Crimson (The Night Watch) Blue Oyster Cult (Career of Evil, Flaming Telepaths) Rush (Finding May Way, Working Man) Uriah Heap (Something or Nothing) Pink Floyd (Time) Big Star (September Gurls) Lynyrd Skynyrd (Don't Ask Me No Questions) Kiss (Nothin To Lose, Kissin Time, Strutter)

The Rolling Stones didn't go out with "It's Only Rock N Roll" but when I played "Emotional Rescue", a #9 UK and #3 US hit in 1980. For them it was somewhat "experimental" in changing from their familiar style and it worked for the public with regards to being a hit but hasn't stood the test of time, and was not popular here. I think it probably deserved to finish near the bottom, but there was a sing-off after that for them to survive and "Paint It Black" is one of their most popular songs that might have saved me (and them). However Haven went for Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" which only finished mid-table in the 1996 Time Machine. Unlike raliverpool 's retro chart my playlist is solely UK top 50 and US Billboard Hot 40 singles and none of your list are there. "Sweet Home Alabama" is on my current 1974 playlist. So artists like Kool & The Gang and Billy Joel got in here because they had US top 40 hits long before they made it in the UK.

It is marked as the first number one for Eric Clapton. It is his second but the first was not a solo hit but as a member of Derek & The Dominos, who were a 5-piece band not just Eric. His name was not credited on it individually, if it had been "Eric Clapton & The Dominos" then I would have counted this as his second number one. But the count is not a major issue anyway.
Other bands vary whether they credit the lead singer or not, e.g. Cockney Rebel which is sometimes "Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel". Steve Harley did reach my chart in a duet with Sarah Brightman in 1986. They peaked at #3.
Perhaps of more interest is the entry at #21 which is potentially the start of the sugary summer hit that became huge after being played in holidays and often bought by people returning. Of course "The Chicken Song" was parody of Agadoo based on such songs but they continued happening long after that with Whigfield getting a debut at UK #1 in 1994, but everyone was fed up of Wet Wet Wet then anyway.

Carl Douglas's UK #1 about Kung Fu succeeds in my chart too in a way the other Kung Fu song didn't, being the highest new entry this week. That's above the classic disco song debut by KC & The Sunshine Band. (I should make a playlist sometime of songs that are names of playing cards. We had Jack Of Diamonds by Lonnie Donegan in the other retro chart but really it was very poor. It scraped in to make up the numbers).

Abba's version of Honey Honey would probably have reached higher than the cover version did.

Abba's version of Honey Honey would probably have reached higher than the cover version did. "Honey Honey" is my second favourite ABBA song (after "That's Me"). Also Amanda Seyfried's cover from "Mamma Mia" spent 5 weeks on the top of my chart.

One of the rock classics by Lynyrd Skynyrd gets to #1. Meanwhile lower down we have yet another Paper Lace song which may get higher than "Billy Don't Be A Hero", a controversial male-chauvenist song by Gilbert O'Sullivan (but don't always take literally the lyrics of his songs he loves controversy) and the only UK #1 for the Osmonds which of course is nowhere near their best song, but was written by Johnny Bristol who has just dropped out of the top 10 this week. (Johnny Bristol also recorded it so it's a cover version).

On this week I started to re-listen my favourite 1974 songs from UK chart. "Born With A Smile On My Face" have good chances for very high position, maybe even for # 1 in my ranking.

-- ( 33 ) Beach Baby - First Class (#2[3]) -- ( 36 ) It's All Up To You - Jim Capaldi (#29) -- ( 38 ) Jarrow Song - Alan Price (#1[7])
No change at #1 this week with Lynyrd Skynyrd posing a strong challenge for next week.
Only 3 new entries. Alvin Stardust is the highest but it's the Cheech & Chong entry that raises the eye here - they were a comedy duo and this was a sketch with the son (played by Chong) listening to a heavy rock song and the dad (Cheech) getting him out of bed to go to school, them having an argument and eventually the dad spanking the boy hard - back in 1974 they did that kind of thing.
What about the rock track itself though? It was credited to "Alice Bowie", a combination in names of Alice Cooper and David Bowie, based partly on the outrageous outfits they wore, and lyrics laughing at the music industry. The guitar riff was played by Gaye Delorme who also wrote it, and has even been covered by some rock acts. The vocals on the track were performed by Cheech Marin.

"Earache My Eye" is heavily sampled in Eminem's "Untouchable" a 6 minute track that was part of "Revival". Doesn't have a proper video on youtube but it came out around the same time as "Walk On Water" which reached #1 in my chart.
Because of an event in the USA involving the death of George Floyd, a black man in police custody, it seems to have received a lot of recent comments as it brings up the subject.

Earl Purple What is NM in the titles of your retro charts ?
Sylvia Vrethammar was a participant of Melodifestivalen (Swedish national Eurovision pre-selection) in 2013 with "Trivialitet".

Among those entering this week, Elton John, Leo Sayer and 10cc who have many hits, but the UK #1 from this list is Sweet Sensation who were bit of a quick sensation, not quite one-hit wonders but soon disappeared. They were Britain's answer to the the Stylistics, Marcel King was the lead singer who sadly died quite young. David Parton wrote the song.
Others here are Peter Shelley who was Alvin Stardust originally (and was never in the Buzzcocks) and Polly Brown now using her own name, and finally Carole King who is still getting this, this one actually was top 10 in the USA.

I see a connection between Showaddywaddy And Sweet Sensation, they both appeared on reality tv show New Faces.
Didn't David Parton rip off Stevie Wonder's song Isn't She Lovely?

I see a connection between Showaddywaddy And Sweet Sensation, they both appeared on reality tv show New Faces. Didn't David Parton rip off Stevie Wonder's song Isn't She Lovely? David Parton covered it when Stevie Wonder's record company decided not to release it as a single from the "Songs In The Key Of Life" album despite its popularity as an album track. A bit like the cover of "Honey Honey" on this chart, but Abba's version will also chart for me as it reached #27 in the USA and has now got onto my playlist. It will get higher than the cover but can't foresee it getting close to #1 as there are some huge ones on this playlist. I guess I could draw the attention of a Haven poster in here by tagging them in saying that earache My Eye is #2 this week.

Before "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" we had this list song - "Life Is A Rock". A few months ago (well weeks ago but months on this chart) I came across a stage video of "Beach Baby" by First Class where Tony Burrows was wearing a ZZ Top shirt, and now the band are namechecked in this song too. ZZ Top were around in 1974, it just took them a long time to break the UK chart. 16 August 1975 is the date they are due to make their debut here with "Tush" but we'll see if it charts.
Another UK #1 entering this week with Ken Boothe's reggae cover of Bread's "Everything I Own". Boy George would later also do a reggae cover of that song. Still Slade's "Far Far Away" which peaked at #2 behind it is far superior and on my next playlist (but there are also a number of other really big songs on that playlist).

A change at #1 - the top end and the chart in general is not as strong as it has been in parts of the year, and the next playlist is massive. Only 2 entries this week though and one of them is from an album that is 4 years old, Samba Pa Ti originally being on the album "Abraxas" which reached #7 in 1970.
There were 3 songs originally on the playlist for this week but one got removed rather swiftly. Clue: a Christian-based country song made famous in the UK 5 years later by a Scottish female singer.

10 new entries this week but I had 13 on the list and Rod Stewart is among those that missed out. It was one of 3 listed tracks so perhaps I could have checked if a different one was better but I just went for the first one on the list. Still in 1975 he'll be back with "Sailing" at some point during that year and I'm sure that one will do a lot better. Actually I saw Rod Stewart live in December. December 2019 that is, not 1974.
Of the new entries, there's a massive one from Bachman Turner Overdrive, and one of John Lennon's classics. Then there are 8 others. Brownsville Station one starts with a long intro and some talking, which I think it would be better without, and Gary Shearston's song dates back to the 1930s I think when Cole Porter wrote it.
This is the last bunch for that playlist. The next playlist has far more great songs in it.

David Essex would finally get to #1 in the UK with "Gonna Make You A Star". There are too many big ones coming up for this to have much of a chance here.
The Sweet Dreams cover of "Honey Honey" peaked at #16. With the Abba original entering at #18 it is excepted to easily beat that, but is highly unlikely to give them a 3rd straight number one.
Roxy Music have another good song enter the chart after Bryan Ferry's diversion into cover versions, and a surprisingly good song by Bobby Vinton (at least by his standards) gets into the top 30 just above the Wombles. Around this time I was about to take grade 5 so I knew exactly what the words "Minuetto Allegretto" meant even as a 9 year old. The song missed the top 10 but they'll be back with one of their biggest hits "Wombling Merry Christmas" in time for the festive season.
