Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss Another one I had completely forgotten about! Holly was the latest Neighbours star at the time to find success in the charts - following the likes of Kylie, Jason, Natalie Imbruglia, Craig McLachlan and Stefan Dennis (maybe the last one's music is better off forgotten haha). Anyway, from this debut it was apparent she had potential, even though the song was a cover I still think she did it pretty well.

Ronan Keating - If Tomorrow Never Comes I never realised at the time of release that this was a cover, but this type of slow country song does kind of suit Ronan's voice I suppose. It's not as good as his cover of 'When You Say Nothing At All' (which I actually think was really good), but it's pleasant enough.

Liberty X - Just A Little These Pop Stars rejects were the classic example of the underdogs gaining more public support than the actual winning team (i.e. Hear'say) - Of course it did help that these got the better material and had the better image, because this is a cracking little pop song, which has aged really well too. I think this would still get people up dancing if it was played in a club.

Eminem - Without Me Now this is one Eminem track that I've always loved - Maybe because bits of it are based around the excellent Malcolm McLaren track 'Buffalo Gals', but it has always been one of the rapper's more appealing songs to me. The bassline is really infectious too, and it's impossible to not want to dance to this.

Will Young - Light My Fire I said before that I really liked Will Young, but I'd be lying if I said this was a cover version I really needed to hear. I mean, it's competent enough and he changes it up enough to make it a not totally pointless project, but the original Doors version is so, so, so sensationally fantastic that it's hard to listen to Will's version without wanting to just stick the original on!

Elvis vs JXL - A Little Less Conversation Coincidentally today is the 43rd anniversary of the King's death, and what I love most about Elvis is that, even though he's now been dead for longer than he was alive, there is always something new to discover by him! At the time this was a relatively obscure track of Elvis's, but this stomping remix just took the song to a whole new level and it's now up there with his most famous tracks. I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Gareth Gates - Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) They're really pushing this Pop Idol on us this year aren't they! This is certainly better than his abysmal cover of 'Unchained Melody' and it does seem like they've found the right image for him now - he looks like a pop star and has a nice catchy song which is up there with Westlife's better singles. I actually quite like this.

Darius - Colourblind Oh and now we have the person who came in third place on Pop Idol, which makes three #1s out of the last four were contestants from the same show. This one was actually co-written by Darius himself, and is certainly more mature sounding than the others. It's quite a jaunty little pop song actually , and catchy. I had totally forgotten how it went, but it's a nice reminder.

Sugababes - Round Round The girls are back with their second #1, and they really could do no wrong at the moment. A catchy chorus and a cool bassline make this sound much better than the actual song itself if it were to be stripped right back. But hey - it works and they've got a great sounding pop single.

Blazin' Squad - Crossroads I never really got into Blazin' Squad at the time, and I knew this more for the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony original from 1996 (which was called 'Tha Crossroads'). Neither version is anything to do with Benny or Miss Diane (which only people of a certain age will understand!). I don't know what to say really - it's ok but it doesn't really excite me that much.

Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss
Terrible terrible song, Down boy and Naughty girl were miles better. Her second album is pretty good, too.
Liberty X - Just A Little
Brilliant piece of pop!
Sugababes - Round Round
Liked it back in the day, but not so much anymore. Stronger was probably the best single from the album.
And I really like Will Young's album Echoes and a few singles there and there, but not his first singles.

I unashamedly love “Anyone Of Us” - and still listen to this now. And “Changes”. And “Sunshine”.

“Kiss Kiss” had number one written all over it. A catchy cover of Turkish act Tarkan, already a big song on the continent a few years earlier, then recorded by a popular soap star, who also appears to look naked in the video but some flashing lights covering her bits. Something for everyone at the time.

Stupidest run of number 1s ever. Literally every one the product of massive television hype with not enough talent to fill a matchbox. With the matches left in.

Stupidest run of number 1s ever. Literally every one the product of massive television hype with not enough talent to fill a matchbox. With the matches left in. By this point I had realised all the number ones were there by hype. People were on dotmusic in 2000 successfully listening every week what would be number one. Remember back then there was virtually a new number one every week. Was obvious it had nothing to do with what the public decided they liked. Otherwise how the hell would they know?

Atomic Kitten - The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling) With a name like Atomic Kitten, I suppose it was inevitable in a way that they would eventually cover a famous Blondie hit. We all know Blondie's wasn't the original either, but it's certainly the most well known version. This has more going for it than their dull version of 'Eternal Flame', as it's not a straight-forward cover so they do put their own stamp on it - While that may not be a first class stamp, it's still fairly tolerable, if not outstanding.

P!nk - Just Like A Pill Finally P!nk gets a #1 single of her own, and it's a first-rate A-grade banger! I bought, and loved, her first album in 2000 when she was an up and coming R&B singer - and then she surprised us all on the second one by becoming this rock chick with attitude! This is still one of her best songs as far as I am concerned, and one I never tire of.

Will Young & Gareth Gates - The Long And Winding Road/Suspicious Minds ...and just like a pill you get the bad comedown afterwards! I'm sorry, I can see why the powers that be saw it be a good money-spinner to have Will and Gareth duet, but this is a painful version of the Beatles classic - and one I hope I never have to listen to for a very long time. To make matters much worse we get a Gareth Gates solo version of 'Suspicious Minds' on the other side, which would make Elvis spin in his grave. Just horrible.
