I’m a massive a Eminem fan, but I still try to be objective about his output and not just say it’s all brilliant. Just Lose It was a really bad single, at the time I was really sad about it, I thought that was the end. He got his mojo back though, he’s done some fantastic stuff since.

Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds So the first #1 of 2005 was the winner of the very first series of X Factor, and before they cottoned on to the idea that they could get the Christmas #1 every year if they timed the final right. It does seem that they wrote Brookstein out of the show's history after he didn't fit the mould of what made their idea of a pop star (or something!), but to be honest he didn't have that much about him - vocally or otherwise, and this cover of an already over-covered classic is mediocre karaoke at best.

Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock It feels like we've gone back to the fifties, but this was part of an Elvis Presley#1s boxset that was released weekly at the start of 2005. It's hard to know what to say about it really in the context of the era I'm reviewing, but it's obviously one of the staples of classic Rock 'N' Roll and a stone cold classic in the history of music in general.

It's my second favourite X-Factor winner single after Joe McElderry - Climb.

Elvis Presley - One Night/I Got Stung Another Elvis re-release, this one was first released in 1957 and was his third UK #1 - the first re-issue, 'All Shook Up', I think wasn't chart eligible as it came with the free CD case to hold them all, but don't quote me on that. 'One Night' is quite a nice simple ballad, but it's not one of his best, and 'I Got Stung' is a boppy little number that I quite like, but again it's not up there with the King's greatest moments.

Ciara Featuring Petey Pablo - Goodies I'm afraid I barely remember this one at all. It's pretty generic R&B of the time which is hard to see why it stood out from the crowd enough to get to #1. Yeah, it's just ok - nothing more, nothing less.

Elvis Presley - It's Now Or Never Well this is definitely classic Elvis, and one of his most well-know ballads. You can't really slag this off because it's such a classic, although I can't help but sing "Just One Cornetto" over the chorus!

Goodies is alright, but Lose Control with Missy Elliott should have been a #1 instead.
The Elvis re-issues were irritating, thankfully they added downloads soon after and they stopped hitting the top.

Eminem - Like Toy Soldiers It's hard to judge this one objectively when the original Martika version of 'Toy Soldiers', which it samples, is one of my most personal songs of all-time and really close to my heart. This just doesn't come close for me I'm afraid, and sadly has no effect on me whatsoever.

Stereophonics - Dakota It's indie disco time - finally! It's been a while since we've had an indie rock anthem at the top of the charts, but this is an absolute banger. It still sounds as great today as it ever did, and is probably the band's best song.

I forgot Against All Odds made more than one appearance at the top spot - Steve’s version was not great, but then I thought G4 were always going to win it - Rowetta was as barmy as a box of frogs.
I secretly love Goodies. And 12 Step.

McFly - All About You/You've Got A Friend The chorus of 'All About You' has always reminded me of the Beach Boys' 'Don't Worry Baby', but I'm sure that's just coincidence. That aside, it's quite a pleasant little pop song, recorded for Comic Relief, which doesn't exactly send shivers down my spine but I've definitely heard worse!
Their version of Carole King's 'You've Got A Friend' (originally on her legendary 'Tapestry' album) fails to really hit the spot for me though. It's such a brilliant song, but I find their rendition a little flat. I much preferred the Brand New Heavies version!

I think Like Toy Soldiers is fantastic! But then I don't really know the Martika song all that well.
Dakota and both sides of the McFly single are great too, we're finally getting some good #1's!

Tony Christie Featuring Peter Kay - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo Peter Kay gets a credit on this because he engineered the whole project, and mimes on the celeb-studded video, but this is essentially a re-issue of the Tony Christie song which reached a modest #18 in 1971, and managed to stay at #1 for 7 whole weeks in 2005. I've got a bit of a soft spot for Tony Christie's voice, and love some of his songs like 'I Did What I Did For Maria' and 'Avenues And Alleyways', and when Peter Kay brought this to my attention I was very grateful for a while. It did get annoying very quickly, and it's not the sort of song you can tolerate playing too often, but it is a great song all the same.

Did we jump a couple? I know “Get Right” is one of the most abysmal noises ever - but it’s worth a mention!

Akon - Lonely I know this annoyed a few people at the time, with it's sped up chorus that sounded like Donald Duck, but I quite liked it and found the chorus quite cute. I don't know what happened to Akon, because his chart career was quite brief, but I definitely preferred this to a lot of the R&B/rap that was around at the time.

U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Ok so I've gone back a few - I don't know what happened there but this, and the following 2 should have come after Eminem. 'Vertigo' wasn't one of my favourite U2 songs but I can see why it got to #1 - it was different and in your face. This is just a run of the mill ballad really, nowhere near in the same league as 'With Or Without You', 'One' or 'All I Want Is You'. It's not bad, but if they'd released this in the eighties I doubt it would have gone top 10.
