Beyonce & Shakira - Beautiful Liar Interesting that Shakira followed Nelly Furtado earlier, and now she's done it again - OK not that interesting, but worth a mention surely! These two superstar ladies teaming up should mean something really special to the ears, but it's just ok really. It's more a Beyonce song I think, with Shakira adding guest vocals, and definitely not the best from either of the girls. It's not bad, just quite good.

McFly - Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania Another double A-side for the boys, and another cover first. 'Baby's Coming Back' was originally a 1991 single by the band Jellyfish, and at the time I was shocked when it only reached #51 because it is one of those upbeat songs with a sing-along chorus that is made for festivals. McFly's version is ok, but nothing like as good as the original again I'm afraid. I've never liked the term 'guilty pleasure', because all music is made to be enjoyed and you should never have to feel guilty for liking anything, but 'Transylvania' could fall under that category if I did come to accept the term. It's just sounds like something you'd play at a child's Halloween party, but at the same time it is insanely infectious and I can't help loving it.

Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z - Umbrella The anthem for anybody being caught out in the rain (maybe), 'Umbrella' is the song that really put Rihanna on the map and turned her into a global superstar. This was back in the days when a ten week spell at #1 was big news - I remember them even breaking the news to the contestants in the Big Brother house, it was that big! I think the song is still probably her best work (or definitely up there) and is one that I have never tired of hearing. Also, the fact that the Manic Street Preachers made it sound like a convincing rock song proves that the core of the song is pretty strong.

Timbaland Featuring Keri Hilson - The Way I Are The fact that this song is actually very good takes away from the mild peril I feel about the poor grammar of the title. It's actually quite a bit better than the last Timbaland #1, and I did like that one too. This one may not have Nelly Furtado, but the name Keri Hilson does ring a bell (I think she popped up on Time Machine one year, and I liked that song too).

The Baseballs cover is much better than original.

Robyn With Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat I don't think I had noticed before, but parts of her singing on this really reminds me of Kate Bush. That is massive praise in itself, but this is an absolutely wonderful pop record that still sounds fresh and innovative today. Sweden have given us some amazing artists (I don't need to list them), and Robyn took her time to find her feet, as she started out in the nineties, but when I first heard this magic on the radio I just had to know who it was straight away.

The Baseballs cover is much better than original. To be fair, their version is very good... and more proof that it is a really strong, adaptable song.

With Every Heartbeat appeared on my playlist right near the start of 2007 and seemed to take off much later in the year, but I guess it's the start of where I divert from popular opinion on here, because I never really good excited by it but Haven went wild for it.
Whilst I'm not keen on most of the number ones, there are a bunch of good songs in the top 40 and Richard Hawley gets his only solo top 40 hit on this week.

I was going to do a few more but I got distracted first by listening to more of the Baseballs covers - I particularly like their takes on 'Don't Worry Be Happy' and '...Baby One More Time'.
Now I'm listening to Richard Hawley, 'Roll River Roll'. I'd forgotten all about that album actually!

I was a big fan of Max Raabe vintage style covers of modern songs.

That's the problem with me moving from iTunes to Spotify a few years ago - there is a whole period of music from this century that I got into at the time but have forgotten all about. I need to try and find a way to catalogue all of the stuff I like so that I can keep coming back to it.

That's why it's good if you keep charts as you have lists there of what you liked at the time.

That's why it's good if you keep charts as you have lists there of what you liked at the time. I have started a few times in the past, but I've never managed to keep it up for long periods. It's not so bad for stuff before the noughties as most of who I liked got in the charts anyway so I have them as reference.
Even now I will browse new music on Spotify and forget to save the stuff I like somewhere, so I just forget about it again. I guess that's what happens when there is such a large quantity of music out there to discover.

Take That - Shine
I love when artists reinvent themselves. And Mark has the lead vocals, it's been a while (was it Babe?).
Timbaland Featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake - Give It To Me
I will never understand how this b-side material made to number 1.
Beyonce & Shakira - Beautiful Liar
Not a fan of the original, but absolutely love the Freemasons remix.
Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z - Umbrella
Most people say that this is THE song that defines whole Rihanna's career and I couldn't agree more. Fantastic tune.
Timbaland Featuring Keri Hilson - The Way I Are
Compared to his previous number 1.. this is a masterpiece, but not a number 1 material.
Robyn With Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat
The never-ending injustice towards Robyn finally ends. Have seen her several times live, fantastic performer, should be on top with all those A class pop stars, great collaboration and Kleerup's album is a good piece of art.

Beautiful Liar co-written by Ian Dench of E.M.F who also reached my chart with Whistler, including a #1 album in 1999 (on of my favourite albums of that year), and Amanda Ghost who reached #2 in my chart in 2000 with "Glory Girl".

Kanye West - Stronger I realise he is very good at what he does, but I've never really taken all that much notice of Kanye. I recognise the Daft Punk sample and I definitely think it sounds better on that, but at the same time his rapping does fit quite snugly on it. It's definitely one hell of a lot better than the rap music that clogs up the charts these days, I'll give it that!

Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls I can remember going from loving to hating this at the time, as it quickly got very annoying - especially as the radio station they had on at work at the time used to play it about four times a shift! I can honestly say, after a gap of quite a few years since I last heard it, that it is nowhere near as irritating any more and I'm quite liking it again.

Sugababes - About You Now I'm sorry, I've never followed the changing line-up of the 'babes so I've no idea who was in the group at the time (even with the picture of them on the sleeve!), but I do know that this is a massive change in quality after the abysmal 'Walk This Way' cover (sorry Last Dreamer!). It's just a pure sing-along noughties pop anthem, and up there with 'Push The Button'.

Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love Leona was the first X-Factor winner that Simon Cowell and co. took their time on and didn't rush in with a quick album release. This is definitely reflected in the quality of her first single proper (if you don't count the winner's song) as this is a really, really good pop/R&B track that shows off her vocal abilities to perfection. I'll stick my neck out here and say it's better than anything Mariah has released since the nineties! The whole album was actually very good.

Stronger, About You Now and Bleeding Love - all examples of great 2007 number ones. It really wasn't an atrocious year.
