Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua - What A Wonderful World It was a tragedy that Eva Cassidy died so young, and before she became famous, because her voice is absolutely stunning and really gets under your skin. Her version of 'Fields Of Gold' is far superior to Sting's original in my opinion. This is one of those singles where a living artist (Katie Melua in this case) takes a recording by a dead one and makes it sound like they're singing together. It seems weird when you think too much about it, but their voices sound so lovely together on this Louis Armstrong classic that it doesn't really matter.

I will never understand all this hate for pop cover versions of big old hits. #JusticeForGirlsAloud.

I will never understand all this hate for pop cover versions of big old hits. #JusticeForGirlsAloud. Not always. Sometimes it can be done well - Steps' version of 'Tragedy' is one example of a pretty good one. There were loads in the 80s!

I've got one more to do for 2007 but I'll have to do it tomorrow. I can't bring myself to listen to it tonight!

I will never understand all this hate for pop cover versions of big old hits. It depends what someone does with a cover version. Jeff Buckley for example with "Hallelujah", or Joe Cocker with "A Little Help From My Friends". Put a fresh and distinctive spin on them.
Whereas e.g. the SAWmill just threw on a load of computer stereotype and did it for the sole reason of making cheap money from people who never heard the original and making sure that that was not available.
Q.v. "When I Fall In Love". Rick Astley's version became a hit - and then dropped when Nat King Cole's original came back out again.

I like many cover versions, which sounds almost the same as original and didn't see anything wrong in it.
and many others.

Beyonce & Shakira - Beautiful LiarNot a fan of the original, but absolutely love the Freemasons remix. 100% agree with this. The original album version is an absolute snoozefest, the remix is excellent!

Generally I agree but I think Bananarama's version of 'Venus' is better than the original

Radio 1 certainly played the remix on The Chart Show: Honestly, most of Beyonce's album released around that time sounded so much better remixed by them than the original songs, especially Deja vu and Ring the alarm!

Yeah that is better than the slower version. I still think that with the right song, the 2 different styles of the ladies could have fused together into something magic.

Generally I agree but I think Bananarama's version of 'Venus' is better than the original I disagree, I prefer Shocking Blue's version. And Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him/Her Goodbye I don't really care for either that much. Really Saying Something I didn't even know was a cover at the time, whereas those two I knew both of them were and knew the originals. I did grow up though also with Showaddywaddy doing covers of late 50s / early 60s songs and liked them, not knowing the originals at the time. Competing with "When I Fall In Love" by Rick Astley was the Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind". But hold on, that's also a cover isn't it, Elvis had recorded it previously? Yes, but they did it a totally new way. Releasing Elvis's version or Willie Nelson's or anyone else's wouldn't have provided the same competition.

Leon Jackson - When You Believe The winner of X-Factor series 4, and I know it was hardly a classic year but what in God's name were the public thinking? No offence to Leon, but he has to be the blandest winner of any talent show ever, although the choice of song was pretty ridiculous as he just didn't have the vocal chords to pull off a big Whitney/Mariah duet. The fact I love the original may have something to do with the fact that I hate this so much, but in a world with any justice this would have gotten nowhere near the Christmas #1 spot.

Only 2 I didn't like in 2007, so it's getting better! How long will it last though?
Best 1. Rihanna - Umbrella 2. Mika - Grace Kelly 3. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat 4. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love 5. Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby
Worst 1. Leon Jackson - When You Believe 2. Sugababes vs Girls Aloud - Walk This Way (everything else is streets ahead of those 2)

Best - 2007 1. Girls Aloud and Sugababes - Walk This Way 2. Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby 3. Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy - What A Wonderful World 4. Leon Jackson - When You Believe 5. Proclaimers - I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
“Ruby” is better song, but for a balance I gave # 1 for “Walk This Way”.
Worst - 2007 1. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love 2. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat 3. Mika - Grace Kelly 4. Rihanna - Umbrella 5. Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
I’m not dislike “Beautiful Girls”, but prefer the rest # 1 singles.

In fairness that series of X-Factor was hardly a smorgasbord of talent - Hope splintered off into one slightly better act, and I will unashamedly say I was rooting for Same Difference. But that Leon Jackson song is terrible. I guess Rhydian was the only one who had some sort of a career after it.
