Basshunter - Now You're Gone I'm not ashamed to admit that I absolutely love this track - it's just up there with the best Eurodance classics as far as I'm concerned. There's not much else to say about it really, it is just infectious as hell and even though it's a sad song lyrically it puts you in a good mood instantly!

Duffy - Mercy Oh yes, this was the period when there were two new female talents on the scene - Adele and Duffy, and I must admit I was more favourable towards Duffy in the beginning. It's only when the second albums came out that it became apparant that Adele had more to give. Duffy's debut album though, from which this was taken, was a brilliant affair and this song sounded like nothing else at the time.

Estelle Featuring Kanye West - American Boy Already this is shaping up to be an epic year, because this is a phenonimally good single. In fact I'd say it's one of the greatest R&B/Hip-Hop tracks of all-time, and I'm struggling to think of a better one at the moment. Estelle did have some other good tunes but she never came close to reaching these heights again, and the song hasn't aged a day.

Madonna Featuring Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes 'Hard Candy' may not be one of Madge's best albums (although if you ask me she hasn't ever done a bad album), but this lead single showed that she was never going to stop reinventing herself and trying new things. On paper it sounds a bit corny, "We only got 4 minutes to save the world... grab a boy, grab a girl" but it really does work. I love this and think it's aged really well actually.

The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name Do you know, I'd completely forgotten all about the Ting Tings! I actually preferred their previous single, 'Great DJ', which only reached #33, but this was a lot catchier so it was obvious it was going to do much better at the time. The song quickly got irritating after hearing it several times, but after quite a few years I don't mind it again.

American Boy is probably in my all time top 5 Rap/Sung collaborations, and also probably my favourite rapping of Kanye’s career. It’s aged so well too.

I've had to stop, as listening to the Ting Tings has made me remember some other great bands from that era who I'd long forgotten. Including this gem that I used to absolutely love:

If you like Basshunter, check out some of the songs I've posted in the Dance forum over the course of the year. There's still some very enjoyable Eurodance being made, just doesn't get anywhere near the charts nowadays.

Rihanna - Take A Bow This is nowhere near as good as 'Umbrella'.. It's also nowhere near as good as Madonna's 'Take a bow', although they are both ballads. Rihanna has done some real classics over the years, but I'm afraid this one is really average and I don't know how it even got into the top ten, let alone #1.

Mint Royale - Singin' In The Rain This was actually released in 2005, where it peaked at #20 and became the first old song to reach #1 on downloads after its use on Britain's Got Talent by young dancer George Sampson. It's basically a club track which uses elements of the fanous song that was originally published in 1929. It's not bad, quite appealing really - and makes you want to get out there in the rain with your umbrella!

Coldplay - Viva La Vida It's hard to believe this was the band's first #1 single, especially when they have absolute masterpieces like 'Yellow' under their belt! Whatever though, this one was quite fast and poppy for them at the time, which could be why it had more universal appeal... plus the fact it's an absolute banger, and a ready made concert closer for them forever more, if they so chose... I've already said it's brilliant haven't I? It also reminds me a bit of a Christmas song, with the bells and all.

Ne-Yo - Closer You forget how many songs you actually like by artists like Ne-Yo, but I really like this a lot actually. I wonder whatever happened to him - he just seemed to have stopped having hits a few years ago. This is one of those songs that sounds better years later when you go back to it, it certainly has that retro appeal.

I was rather fond of Take A Bow at the time, but it is a bit of a retread of B’s Irreplaceable- and yes, definitely no where near as good as the Madonna song of the same name. I really liked this (and the next) Rihanna era, just after that it was exactly one great single per album, and the rest was OK.
My favourite Rihanna song never reached number one (Russian Roulette), and I’m not going to lie I love Bitch Better Have My Money. Because it was so ridiculous.

And I really Closer too! It’s one of those songs that I never actually sought out to listen to or bought/downloaded, yet know all the words.

I could easily have done without Ne-Yo before Closer, which is a really great pop song.
Take A Bow hasn't aged very well, it just sounds boring nowadays although I liked it at the time.

Leon Jackson - When You Believe
The winner of X-Factor series 4, and I know it was hardly a classic year but what in God's name were the public thinking?
Almost certainly a block vote from Scotland.

Take A Bow was okay at the time, but now sounds so dates and bland.
Viva La Vida on the other hand sounds even better now than it did back in ‘08. A contender for my favourite Coldplay album too.

American boy is brilliant, didn't know That's not my name was a number 1 in UK, a bit overrated. Basshunter is definitely the worst of the bunch. Take a bow used to sound good, it sounds a bit dated now.

Dizzee Rascal Featuring Calvin Harris & Chrome - Dance Wiv Me I don't know much about Chrome, but I do like Dizzee Rascal and this is a really infectious tune - especially with Calvin Harris's hand in turning it into a dance record. Hardcore Grime fans were probably not happy about him moving into a poppier sound, but to my ears it's a great single.

Kid Rock - All Summer Long Kid Rock has been going for years, but only managed the one big hit in the UK- I still say his duet 'Picture', with Sheryl Crow should have been a massive #1 but that's a different story... This one borrows from a couple of 70s classics, 'Werewolves of London' and 'Sweet Home Alabama', and the song is much richer for it, but it doesn't detract too much from the brilliance of the song. I remember a lot of people slagged this off at the time but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for it.
