I'll comment after I've seen them. Israel could at least draw with Russia I reckon. What would be even better is Macedonia to beat Croatia, now that would make it really interesting!

one newspaper was reporting the economy will lose 1.25billion with failure to qualify.

Well that's probably true tbh. Just think about how mad everyone gets every time there's a major championship. The amount of money spent is so high! It's said the FA will lose up to £10m, pales in comparison to the amount they'd have lost if they sacked McClaren when they should've...

one newspaper was reporting the economy will lose 1.25billion with failure to qualify. 1 billion of that in alcohol sales Seen the game, foul outside the box, how the linesman did not say anything I do not know Then again Gerard and Richards should have buried their chances and put the game out of reach imo, yes Robinson parried it badly, but who reacted first, the striker. Ho hum, the media will want their lb of flesh.

predictably the media are full of miserabilist, cynical sniping, blaming the manager, the players, etc... how about this for an idea? maybe russia ACTUALLY PLAYED WELL... no really! they were attacking almost from kick-off and we kept them out pretty effectively, but after conceding that 'penalty' it all went downhill - no-one was going to risk another crucial tackle after that it's sad, but as a nation of fans (and, admittedly, journalists) we need to stop looking for someone to blame/sack after every bad result. and besides, we're not out yet... maybe we'll beat the group leaders and russia will fail to turn up against israel... heh... still, there's always the rugby, eh?

I dont think they were that good to be honest until they got the penalty that wasn't. The game should have been over by that point anyway, if we had taken our chances.

tbh, i never expected us to get through the match without conceding. we were the better team until the penalty went in, but they had enough chances to equalise, though they obviously had trouble finishing. still, i will agree that we should have put the match to bed by then - just thinking about gerrard's miss in particular makes me sad

Situation with 1 game remaining (for most teams):
Group A:
Poland 27 Portugal 26 Finland 23 Serbia 20 (2 games to play - game with Kazakhstan was postponed to tomorrow)
Poland are through, Portugal will qualify if they avoid defeat to Finland. If Finland beat Portugal, then Finland will qualify unless Serbia win both their remaining matches (against Kazakhstan and Poland) - in which case Serbia would qualify.
Group B:
Italy and France are through.
Group C:
Greece 28 Turkey 21 Norway 20
Greece are through. Turkey will qualify unless Norway beat Malta and Turkey fail to beat Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Group D:
Czech Republic and Germany are through (both on 26 pts, Czech Republic ahead on head-to-heads). It has however been reported that Germany do not want to win the group due to the crap seeding method used for the tournament.
Group E:
Croatia 26 England 23 Russia 21
Croatia are through (despite their defeat to Macedonia!). Russia will only qualify if they beat Andorra and England lose to Croatia.
Group F:
Spain 25 Sweden 23 Northern Ireland 20
Spain are through. NI will qualify only if they beat Spain and Sweden lose to Latvia.
Group G:
Romania and Netherlands are through (with 26 pts each - Romania are ahead on head-to-heads).

That looks fairly weak in places, I hope we get Austria in our group, even with the fan support, they are beatable!

We're going to have bizarre situation with the draw where it will probably be better NOT to be seeded.
Switzerland and Austria are both very beatable and Greece are unlikely to repeat their 2004 success so a lot of teams will be happy to play one of those. Whoever gets the final seeding place will be cursing their luck. At the moment it looks like being Holland.
Unusually, after Croatia's and Romania's defeats at the weekend, all 50 teams taking part in qualifying have now lost at least 1 game during the campaign.

Random question - why is it that England always seem to require a draw in their final group game? It seems to happen quite a lot:
2006 WC: needed a draw v Sweden to guarantee top of the group. Euro 2004: needed a draw v Croatia to go through Euro 2004 qual: needed a draw v Turkey to qualify 2002 WC: needed a draw v Nigeria to go through 2002 WC qual: needed a draw against Greece to qualify (although that was only due to Germany failing to beat Finland) Euro 2000: needed a draw v Romania to go through (which we didn't manage) 1998 WC qual: needed a draw v Italy to qualify (as mentioned in 3 Lions)
and there's probably a few examples from earlier occasions!
