Before everyone groans, this will be a lot shorter! Mark Goodier was sitting in for Bruno this week, something which he seemed to be doing more often around this time, but maybe that was just me. It probably wasn't a coincidence though as I was starting to warm to his professional and informative approach by this stage and probably remember the shows he did just as well as Bruno. I sometimes think the 3 hour format seemed to suit Goodier more than than Bruno, as Goodier was more used to presenting regular daytime shows at this time. When Goodier did it it seemed more like a regular show sometimes rather than just a chart show. Anyway I digress! Last week's No 1 was Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around which had now spent 5 weeks at No 1 selling over 600k (though maybe that was shipments, the sales at #1 that we have dont add up to that total ).

Here's the Top 30 album chart highlights with 4 NE 5 RE 3 Climbers 2 Non-Movers
NE 20 Keith Sweat - Get Up On It NE 18 Ozric Tentacles - Arborescence Mark played Big Fat Funky Booty from the Spin Doctors album and Voulez-Vous Danser from the Ace of Base album.
I found the Dominator's analysis of the Top 10 albums on Google from the time so I've put that here for the Top 10 that Mark Goodier counted down.
10 NEW ENTRY : Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats : The Best Of...
From Bob Geldof's recent appearance on MTV's Most Wanted with Ray Cokes, just before Bob was about to sing "I Don't Like Mondays" :
Ray : So, everyone must go and buy Bob's new 'best of' album, Loudmouth! It's really great....honest(!) Bob : Ray, you really are a c*nt aren't you? Ray : (still smiling and trying his best to keep his head above water) Don't have Bob on your show...he'll *ruin* it! He will!! See you all tomorrow..if I still have a job, that is.
9 (6) FALLER : Deacon Blue - Our Town - Greatest Hits 8 (4) FALLER : Eddi Reader - Eddi Reader
The new album from the lead singer of the now-defunct band, Fairground Attraction, slips a few places after her high new entry last week.
7 (8) CLIMBER : Blur - Parklife 6 (3) FALLER : The Cranberries - Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We? 5 (36) CLIMBER : Wet Wet Wet - End Of Part One (Their Greatest Hits)
Following the success of their current No.1, and the repromotion of this album in TV advertising, has sent it rocketting back in to the Top 10 after a lengthy absence.
4 (10) CLIMBER : Electric Light Orchestra - The Very Best Of E.L.O.
In December 89, a double CD entitled "Their Greatest Hits" was released which reached No.23 and spent 21 weeks in the charts. Now we have a single CD with omissions of certain songs replaced by a few others, but overall it is not as good as the previous effort. Still, it's earned them a bit more money, since their intermediate album, "ELO Part 2" made just No.34 in June 91 and spent a mere 4 weeks in the album charts. LATE ADDITION : "Their Greatest Hits" was also issued under the title of "The Very Best Of E.L.O" with the same track listings and catalogue number. So, which *is* the very best of ELO ?
3 HIGHEST NEW ENTRY : Spin Doctors - Turn It Upside Down I doubt this will do so well next week, as their first single from the album, "Cleopatra's Cat" took two or three weeks to get into the Top 40, at No.29, and then disappeared without a trace. They win the award for Bullshitters Of The Week, by saying in a newspaper article about their support to The Rolling Stones soon, that they have previously turned down offers of support acts because :
"We would rather play to 500 people who are there to see The Spin Doctors, than 15,000 who are there to see someone else."
Hmm, I smell bovine residue! The figures quoted may not be exact as the article was over a week ago, but you get the idea.
2 (2) FALLER : Mariah Carey - Music Box Now available as a limited edition CD with all-black cover so you everyone who has it in their collection doesn't have to look at a horrible close-up of Ms. Carey every time they pick it up.
1 (1) NON-MOVER : Ace Of Base - Happy Nation Second week at No.1 for the new Abba.

Here's the Top 40, I wont comment on every track just yet unless there's information for it that was mentioned I'll reveal why later. I'll also insert comments from Dom's analysis at the time NE 40 Nina Simone - Feeling Good How weird is this, I only discovered Muse's cover version of this the other week, havent actually heard it in full yet though. Anyway this song was 29 years old back then, and it was from the VW ad of the time. Obviously its now back on Nina Simone's new best of album.
Dom said Re-released due to its appearance in a TV advert for Volkswagen cars. It staggers me why anyone would buy just a single of one song, going by the current prices of singles, when they could buy a CD of lots of her hits for at least a couple of quid more. Still, it's worked many times before.
31 39 Beautiful South - Everybody's Talkin They were also #21 in the album chart with Miaow NE 38 Wildhearts - Sucker Punch 36 37 Daryl Hall and the Sounds Of Blackness - Gloryland Dom said I didn't think this song would sell as well as it probably has in the States, and it hasn't. 35 36 Yousson N Dour and Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds Incidentally this song hadnt peaked yet not by a long way! Here's Dom's comments which I can sympathise with! I still don't know what this song is about, so can someone please enlighten me. However, it's begun to grow on me as I've heard it in the past week, so it deserves to do better than a lot of the rubbish in the charts at the moment.

A couple of interesting things from the news at 4.31. Sampras beating 4th seed Goran Ivanisevic 7-6 7-6 6-0 to win Wimbledon, and Michael Schumacher winning the French Grand Prix with Damon Hill 2nd and Mansell having to retire with mechanical problems.

Whatever happened to Ray Cokes? I always thought he was OK, but he seemed to get pushed out of the way by the slightly annoying Paul King. The only time i saw MTV at this time was in my local pub, so I remember seeing quite a lot of it . In fact, I'm sure I saw Ray Cokes last appearance, whenever that was. I'm sure I remember him saying something like "this is goodbye for the last time"... That Nina Simone song reppeared 3 years later in a remix / reworking by Huff and Herb, one of the best club songs of 1997, yet it made a lowly #31.

NE 35 Blind Melon - Change NE 34 L7 - Andres NE 33 Lighter Shade Of Brown - Hey DJ This song's release was delayed earlier in the year and it became a summer hit as a result. After hearing that the piano was the same used in Mariah Carey's Honey, I also discovered that the song sampled the World Famous Supreme Team's Hey DJ. 20 32 Man Utd - Come On You Reds 22 31 East 17 - Around the World
So an active chart so far then with 5 NEs albeit none with much commercial appeal.

Can't comment on Ray Cokes as I've never heard of him lol, but I may check out that Nina Simone remix, I seem to vaguely remember hearing about before. Consdering it was released at the end of the that year it probably got caught up with the mad Xmas sales rush.

NE 30 Toni Braxton - You Mean the World To Me Dom's comments... The third hit for Ms. Braxton, following the No.2 peak of her first hit, Breathe Again, and her No.15 follow-up, Just Another Sad Love Song. This is more of the same. If you like the other two, you'll like this. If you don't...don't say I didn't warn you. 16 29 Aaliyah - Back And Forth Dom's comments... I finally heard this during the week inbetween, and it's just a standard piece of soul. 28 28 Stiltskin - Inside The next 7! songs were played back to back, here they are with dom's comments 24 27 Aerosmith - Shut Up And Dance Hardly surprising, this really. Aerosmith only seem to really sell well in the first single or two from each album. A better bet would have been to release 'Crazy' instead which is currently being played to death on MTV, and features regular Alicia Silverstone, and now Liv Tyler, daughter of lead singer Steven. The only 'clips' for a video I've seen for 'Shut Up And Dance' are just slowed down clips of 'Crazy'. Is there no video for this one? 19 26 Chaka Demus and Pliers - I Wanna Be Your Man 37 25 Pretenders - Night In My Veins Ten times better than their previous single, in my mind I'd like to see this song have a video set in a fairground like 'Kid' was. The song just seems to fit that kind of atmosphere. (Their previous single was I'll Stand By You btw) 15 24 Atlantic Ocean - Body In Motion 21 23 Gwen Dickey and KWS - Ain't Nobody Is it just a coincidence or why are cover versions of this song beginning to appear? Jaki Graham is soon to release (or might have done already) her own cover version, just as bland, which was previewed at the end of last week's ITV Chart Show which is sponsored by....um....oh..er...who is it again? 13 22 Mariah Carey - Anytime You Need A Friend Anytime she needs a friend she can go elsewhere Lol!! 12 21 Maxx - Getaway The award for the 'Most Original Lyrics of the Week' goes to this one.

So far then 6 NE 1 Climber and 1 Non-Mover (and that was a song which had peaked ages ago). I'll do the Top 20 some other time, with my usual service for most of it

Was Ray Coakes on MTV Europe before MTV UK came along in 1996 ish?. yeah. I think he might have been one of the original presenters when MTV (Europe) launched in the late 80s. I'm almost certain he was there when I first saw MTV around 1990. I can't remember if he moved to the UK version or not.

I remember Ray Cokes on MTV Europe in 1989-90. This was the period when MTV played music and Ray Cokes, Paul King and Pip Dan were VJ's sat on a stool (top half of body shot on camera) with computer generated images in the background. God I bet that Pip Dan was dirty! I seem to remember Ray for being highly eccentric, fun and doing stuff like; (pretending to) fall of his stool, talking b*ll*x some/most of the time, putting his head/face right upto camera, etc etc. Paul King was the antidote to this, steady with what seemed to be lots of musical knowledge. Pip Dan; sultry, dirty b*tch often with white revealing blouses - although I was a bit too young at the time. Ray Cokes did leave to do other media stuff, and then I seem to remember him going back to MTV Networks to present on the new VH1. I've seen trailers with him in over the past 2-3 years though - so he must still do bits for them. He's done a show on Virgin Radio as well about 6-7 years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MTV_VJswww.raycokes.com/

Time to finish off this countdown I think, here's the next 4 with the usual comments from Dom. 17 20 Aretha Franklin - Willing To Forgive But I'm not. NE 19 Beastie Boys - Get It Together A cut from their Ill Communication album Dom below... I've only heard this once so far, but it sounds like typical Beastie Boys. Just can't work out why they've got such a high new entry after such a long time away from the charts. Their biggest hit to date was "She's On It" which got to No.10 in July/August 1987. Others include "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Your Party)" which made No.11 in Feb/March of the same year, "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" at No.14 in June, and "Girls / She's Crafty" at No.34 in October of that year. They also had an album out in January of that year, "Licenced To Ill" which reached No.7, and followed it up in August 1989 with "Paul's Boutique", which only made No.44. They released a single from that, the title of which I forget now, but as far as I can remember, it was not a Top 40 hit.
11 18 Oasis - Shakermaker Goodier was clearly disappointed that this was falling from its peak this week. That in itself isnt surprising as he always seemed a massive Oasis fan, and he only mentioned on Radio 2 last week that he's a big Man City fan like the Gallagher brothers. Dom below... Sad but true that one of the best singles in the chart should fall.
14 17 Juliet Roberts - Caught In the Middle

I remember switching on during the next song, after watching the Wimbledon final. So from this point until the end its a comment for every song, both from me and Goodybags (sorry I've got to call him that, I heard that was his nickname and its stuck with me ever since lol) There will also be comments from Dom for some too.
This next song has been given no less than 21 different remixes lol, and it still falls 6 places. #16, Cappella - U And Me

Here's the real proof that this is the only chart show that matters. 30 minutes ago Elton John called the show. He was about to step on a plane and wanted to know where his song is. We told him, its a new entry Elton, Can You Feel the Love Tonight in at #15.
Not the highest new entry but a respectable debut position for Elton John's 48th UK Top 40 single. From the Lion King the Disney movie which opens in the UK in October.
This song holds strong memories for me along with another song much higher up, so I'll mention more later. Given that the Lion King didn't open until October, it does make me wonder whether they should have delayed its release for a month or 2.
Here's Dom's comments
The first single in the UK to be taken from the new Disney film, The Lion King which is released in UK cinemas in October. Compared to the rest of Elton John's stuff, this one is not a good one, but probably perfect for a Disney film.

Last week's 18 gets a climb of 4 places for Let Loose, #14 Getting the chart success they've been working for a while
I liked this instantly when I had first heard it a couple of weeks earlier. Given that it had entered at #24 and songs entering outside the Top 20 didnt get that far by this stage I was just pleased to see it get this high, although I would have been disappointed not to see it reach the Top 10 on reflection afterwards. I remember reading an interview in TOTP magazine where they said how delighted they were with their chart run of 24-18-14-10-6-4-4-3-2.
There's more to this story, which will be saved for the next countdown I'll do in a couple of months time.
Here's Dom's comments Not quite managing to reach Take That status just yet, but could do if they have a few more hits, since their music is aimed at the same teen market. As Take That have been around for quite some time at the top now, their days could well be numbered...

And its down 5 for the Prodigy, No Good is now #13 (disappointed tone)
Despite liking the Prodigy I was never a particularly big fan of this song at the time, though it did have some appeal.

And Ace Of Base have a No 1 album in the Uk this week for a 2nd week, and a single that slides 6 places, #12 (Cue Let Loose again) We seem to have a problem with that Ace Of Base, we'll come back and try to find it in just a sec (Cue trailer). The No 1 album this week is their Happy Nation. Its also topped the charts in Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Norway, Canada, France, Portugal and the USA. Now thats success (you're telling me!) This is my 2nd favourite Ace Of Base song, and after giving the album a proper listen for the first time yesterday I realised how good the album is as well. The version I've got is the US version that I bought off amazon or CDWow (something like that) a couple of years ago, and this song especially does differ. I feel an Ace Of Base appreciation thread coming on
