Gareth Southgate has today stated he's not looking to sign a goalkeeper following the departure of Mark Schwarzer and will let Brad Jones and Ross Turnbull battle it out for the #1 jersey.
Whilst I think Turnbull is a promising prospect, Jones is a complete liability and I would be very worried if he started the season as our #1...

Especially when only Malbranque played any real part in their season

Looks like Kitson is off to Stoke for 4m as well. Stoke sign Kitson for £5.5m! He's a decent striker but £5.5m seems like a good bit of business for Reading... Will Cambridge be getting a percentage of that? Your first comment was exactly what I was thinking too! Good question about Cambridge..that hadn't occurred to me before, but with the fee we got for him its distinctly possible. Will see what i can find out. Still sad to see him go though . He's always been a great goalscorer but last season his all round play really impressed me. He often played deeper, not sure if this was tactical or Kitson getting frustrated at lack of service, i would suggest from comments i've seen its the latter, doyle struggled as a result through having no support and he's proved in the past he can't play on his own up front... Anyway i digress, his passing, vision and control really were excellent in this deeper role, at times he was the best player on the pitch. Pulis said he works hard for the team, which did make me laugh, he's never been the hardest working player in the team!

Sunderland have offered Tottenham over £20m for Chimbonda, Tainio, Malbranque and Kaboul... It says in today's Mail that its now only 2 of them, Tainio and Malbranque, as Chimbonda and Kaboul have turned Sunderland down. Chimbonda is waiting on a move to either Newcastle or Everton, for £4m, and Kaboul's agent says there are better offers in the pipeline. Why thats the case im not really sure, think Kaboul was sh*t when i saw him play last season. Not sure about Tainio (who i heard was being linked with a move to Hamburg a few weeks ago, to link up again with Jol) but Malbranque would be a quality signing for Sunderland, and i'm surprised that Spurs are willing to let him go.

Cambridge United's official web site says they agreed a deal with Reading earlier in the week regarding the sell-on fee for Kitson. No mention of exact percentages or amounts...

Cambridge United's official web site says they agreed a deal with Reading earlier in the week regarding the sell-on fee for Kitson. No mention of exact percentages or amounts... Just been looking and 17.5% has been mentioned. Apparently this 17.5% will be minus what they've already received, around 300k after Kitson passed 50 goals and we won promotion, and the amount thats been mentioned is anything from 500k-700k. This was on the understanding that he'd joined Stoke for 4-5m, so its likely to be more than that. Off the top of my head and obviously without knowing the exact figure, that suggests we receive around 4-4.5m, which is probably what he's actually worth..

Just to clarify as the above post was written in a hurry. The 700k came from a fan who simply worked out 17.5% of 4m. Over 500k (575k to be exact) is the 17.5% minus what Cambridge have already received (150k for the original fee + 75k for promotion + 75k for passing 50 goals), assuming the fee was 5m. So from that, as the fee was 5.5m the amount Cambridge receive is 962500 (17.5%) - 300k, which gives them 662500 in total. Thats a lot for a Blue Square Prem side, Mansfield could do with that kind of money It leaves us with 4.8m, which is still a decent bit of business..

Rory and Mickey Boulding will be signing for Cheltemham Town! Only ones who wanted Rory as part of the deal I guess, I expect Rory to be loaned out to Bath City...

The club said on their official website that there is no sell-on clause to Cambridge United.

Liverpool sign Robbie Keane for £20.3m!
In more humourous news, Sunderland have signed El-Hadji Diouf.

We signed striker Noel Hunt from Dundee United last Wednesday for an undisclosed fee believed to be 600k. Came as rather a surprise as i only found out earlier in the day that we'd had a bid rejected the previous day, and not long before the deal was announced there was a quote from Coppell on Sky text saying something along the lines of "we've got a couple of possibilities, but nothing's got too far yet".
He's the 25 year old brother of Stephen and scored 18 goals in the SPL last year. Its becoming a family connection at Reading as Doyle is also now Stephen Hunt's brother-in-law! (Hunt married Doyle's sister over the summer).

Lee Cattermole has joined Wigan from Boro for £3.5m.
It's always sad to see the young players leave but Cattermole hasn't progressed as well as many hoped he would after he broke into the first team as a 17 year old a few years ago. He was in and out of the team last season and struggled to produce the goods when he got a chance.
At £3.5m, it's probably a good move for both parties. That money will fund a move for either James Harper or a goalkeeper.
This is the second summer in a row Southgate has sold an academy product with lots of first team experience after James Morrison went to West Brom. I wasn't happy about that decision but I can't really disagree with the decision to sell Cattermole. Southgate's shown he does have faith in the young players he thinks are good enough - David Wheater's fantastic performances in defence were enough to persuade him to sell Woodgate - but is ruthless enough to offload those he thinks aren't quite up to it.
Several clubs are sniffing around Adam Johnson, who is obviously hungry for first-team football but is kept out of the team by Downing. Southgate doesn't want to sell as he knows there's a good chance Downing will go in a couple of years but it will be hard to keep Johnson happy in the meantime. A loan move to Rangers has been rumoured...

Keane to Liverpool, didn't see that coming! You must have missed the speculation then Must admit it did come as a surprise. They've been after Barry for months and then suddenly Keane becomes their first choice. As for Reading, looks like Shorey's on his way finally. He wasn't even on the bench for our friendly with Villa yesterday. Coppell, being more open than usual, said that we turned down a bid for him during the week but he's "60/40" that he'll have left by next weekend. He also admitted publically, i think for the first time, that he told the club he wanted to leave a year ago. We would need to sign a replacement, possibly two. Our 2nd choice left-back Golbourne is currently injured and if Rosenior, who can also play left-back, is covering for Murty then that means Hunt has to play there, which should only be a stopgap. That said it would be best for both parties if he did leave. He's made no secret of his desire to leave and he's only got 12 months left on his contract. Plus unlike Sidwell he proved in the 2nd half of last season that the speculation unsettled his performances. We don't need a player who clearly doesn't want to be at the club if he isn't going to perform to his ability, though if he didn't at least play consistently well in the Championship there would be something seriously wrong anyway.

In addition to what i said above about Shorey, i think one reason why we may be holding out for more money is that Leyton Orient are entitled to 17%, 20%, not sure but its around that. Their manager Martin Ling has said they're waiting for the money to come through before making any signings of their own. It may sound like that's risky but he said he'd heard from his sources that Shorey was very likely to move. He also said he's got a list of 4 players he wants if the Shorey deal does go through, and 4 if it doesn't go through, depending on the budget that Orient would have. Probably not the best thing for him to say as if the deal doesn't go through then whoever he signs will know they weren't the player he really wanted!
The Spurs fans i know are all gutted that Keane has gone to Liverpool. A mate had Keane on the back of his shirt, he was his favourite player and it was the first time he'd ever had a player on there, and he's said he won't be doing that again!

I think Reading would be wise cashing in on shorey and buying 2 or 3 good players for the new season.
