It's about that time of year to start sharing your musical tips to be big in 2009! This time last year, it was already very clear that the likes of Duffy, The Courteeners, Adele and Glasvegas were going to be big in 2008. There don't seem to be as many obvious contenders this time around...but maybe I'm missing something big? Anyway, always nice to be introduced to new music - so I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with. Here are some of mine: Red Light Companyuk.youtube.com/watch?v=FMs1NbeUNDQFor fans of: The Arcade Fire, Editors, British Sea PowerVV Brownuk.youtube.com/watch?v=JGFTTkSGGj4For fans of: Lily Allen, Beverley Knight, Ida MariaFlorence & The Machineuk.youtube.com/watch?v=tpsDegqioVAFor fans of: Kate Nash, Laura Marling, Martha WainwrightWhite Liesuk.youtube.com/watch?v=oIyAJx_4Jv8For fans of: Editors, Joy Division, Echo & The BunnymenLittle Bootsuk.youtube.com/watch?v=4sky1mAT6d8For fans of: Hot Chip, The Ting Tings, CSSCrystal Castlesuk.youtube.com/watch?v=56E8yYgLNHEFor fans of: Klaxons, New Young Pony Club, Simian Mobile DiscoMaster Shortieuk.youtube.com/watch?v=1cZGS249SnAFor fans of: Dizzee Rascal, Mos Def, WileySome others that may or may not finally take off in 2009: Ladyhawke The Gaslight Anthem Johnny Flynn dananananakroyd Flashguns Cajun Dance Party Anyone agree or disagree? Or have anything else to add? I've included some bands that are big-ish already, but may take off further in 2009...so that's fine as well, they don't need to be new bands.

Little Boots and VV Brown were what I was going to pick!

Good call on VV Brown. I love her song (hence why I nominated her on ROTW this week). She's one I'll be keeping an eye on for sure.

Another one I have high hopes for is Alex Roots. I believe she is meant to be launching next year.
Maybe Annie will finally breakthrough?

I can't see Annie ever breaking through in the UK, unfortunately. She sits somewhere between Robyn and Roisin Murphy musically - and I don't see her coming near to the success of either of those. I've got my fingers crossed for Lykke Li who is quite similar, though.

Agreed on a lot of the selections above, these haven't been mentioned yet..
Magistrates
Make This Work - released earlier this year on XL. Recently on tour with Black Kids and now in the studio recording their debut album. Zane Lowe has championed them so expect some Radio 1 lovin' early next year when they return with a new single.
Empire Of The Sun
Walking on a Dream - album and title track to be released in early 2009.

Good call on Friendly Fires - I was going to include them actually. I mean the album's been a hit already, but I like to think that they can get bigger.

Doctor Blind - I'm liking the Empire of The Sun track. Not feeling the Magistrates one so much, but I think that they will probably be the bigger of the two.

I think VV Brown is a big one, the song and vocals are so entertaining and energetic on her new song!

Well having seen Little Boots live, and Florence & The Machine 5 days ago, they're both brilliant!
and Remi Nicole has a new album out next year, we'll see if that catastrophically flops like her last...
and Peggy Sue, they're gaining more popularity... so they should

I'm 100% sure Lady Gaga would be huge in the UK in 2009. At least as big as Katy Perry.

I hope VV Brown does make it big, she deserved to with "Whipped" back in 2005 really, but that stalled at #84.

I would definitly agree on Little Boots - saw her on Later with Jools last night, she was brill! Definitly a star in the making... I can see her being the Mika/Duffy of 2009 (i.e. lots of media hype, followed by big selling single and album early on in the year).

I'm really rooting for Ra Ra Riot to make it big in 2009. Here's a link to my favorite song of theirs, "Can You Tell," although this version sounds slightly different to me.
If you like it, I also recommend "Too Too Too Fast" and "Run My Mouth."

The Jools performance was brilliant - that's definitley going to help her! Not sure if she can shift as many albums as Mika or Duffy - but I definitley think she's going to get the early year pre-hype. "Meddle" will be massive.

That's good news. Hopefully she'll be more clear of which direction to go in this time. Something more akin to the original version of "Fed Up", I'm hoping? Peggy Sue could breakthrough - they were one of my tips for 2008 though and it didn't happen, so I'm not holding my breath. Fingers crossed, however.

I could see her having quite a few hits here. "Just Dance" is only just taking off at American radio now, which is odd because it's been popular since the early summer and hit #1 in Canada a couple of months ago. Better late than never I guess! Hopefully the UK will catch on next, although I ended up deleting about two-thirds of her album.
