Alex Tagliani has taken pole position for next week's Indy 500. It's a bit of a strange grid, with 4 drivers who don't even have regular drives in the top 10: Townsend Bell 4th, Dan Wheldon 6th, Buddy Rice 7th and Ed Carpenter 8th.
Bump day qualifying is going on at the moment so the 33-car field isn't yet confirmed but as things stand right now there are 5 British drivers on the grid: 6th - Dan Wheldon 9th - Dario Franchitti 20th - Justin Wilson 21st - Jay Howard 30th - Pippa Mann
Mike Conway, James Jakes and Alex Lloyd are all trying to qualify as well.
Simona de Silvestro was 24th fastest, just days after suffering burns to her hands when her flipped and caught fire during practice.

Alex Lloyd made it in with minutes to spare, going ahead of Pippa Mann, and bumping Marco Andretti off the grid. Andretti then made it in right at the death, bumping team-mate Ryan Hunter-Reay. Lloyd will start 31st, Mann 32nd. Conway and Jakes both miss out.
Grid:
ROW 1 1. Alex Tagliani (Canada) 2. Scott Dixon (New Zealand) 3. Oriol Servia (Spain)
ROW 2 4. Townsend Bell (USA) 5. Will Power (Australia) 6. Dan Wheldon (GB)

Real amateur stuff in GP2 qualifying: .
The Formula Renault 3.5 Series boys were all very well behaved in comparison (although their qualifying was split into two groups). I do think the FR 3.5 Series may have a marginally better driver line-up than GP2 actually. Certainly I can see Ricciardo and Wickens make the jump from FR3.5 to F1 next season. I'm not sure anyone from GP2 will. Grosjean certainly deserves to but he has been tarred by his experience with Renault a few years ago.
The sprint race was the usual farce that it is in Monaco. Once Pic got into the first corner in 1st everyone settled for position. The only overtaking in the points came from Filippi and Valsecchi passing Chilton and that was because Chilton's tyres were long past their best. Grosjean settled for 3rd and him, Turvey and van der Garde started creating gaps to put in the fastest lap for the extra point. I'm saddened someone like Grosjean wasn't keen to race Kral to try and take 2nd.

What should have been penalised in GP2 AND F1 was the slowing in Rascas, blocking very badly, very unsportsman and c'mon just quali properly, get space round the lap not in one corner.
All in all a very entertaining weekend but very unrespectful weekend on all drivers!

Britain's Dan Wheldon has won the Indianapolis 500 after leader JR Hildebrand crashed into the wall coming out of the final corner!

The finish is now under review with Hildebrand's crew claiming the race-winning pass was made under yellow.
I don't really see what Wheldon was supposed to do. You don't slow down/stop behind a car that has just crashed. I suppose it'll depend how desperate the powers-that-be are to have an American winner...

The finish is now under review with Hildebrand's crew claiming the race-winning pass was made under yellow. Except it wasn't. And I dread to think the safety consequences if drivers have to slam on anchors every time they see someone hit the wall ahead of them. The most astonishing finish I have ever seen.

Yes, as the video shows, the light turns from green to yellow in between Wheldon passing Hildebrand and him crossing the line of bricks.
Panther Racing now say they haven't protested the result and it will stand.

Still came second...but maybe the lapped traffic should have given the leader the inside lane?

Still came second...but maybe the lapped traffic should have given the leader the inside lane? Hildebrand came up on Kimball quite quickly and in such situations it's felt that it's better for the driver being lapped to hold their line and allow the overtaking car to go around them. Although blocking isn't allowed, the responsibility is placed on the driver doing the overtaking to make a clean pass, whether it's for position or just lapping someone. Hildebrand should've just eased off and stayed behind, as he was running on fumes anyway. British drivers have won 3 of the 5 races so far this year.
