yeah, not really surprised, he can't play 3 games in a week, much like ledley king sadly, then cahill is injured and so is dawson. he will probably play terry, smalling, jagielka and lescott in the frendly and look at bringing cahill in for smalling if he gets fit

I thought Smalling was injured as well, or maybe I'm mixing him up with someone else. After lescott's mistake in the man city game, that centre of defence does not fill me with confidence at all!

After lescott's mistake in the man city game, that centre of defence does not fill me with confidence at all! he started against sunderland, infact looking back he played the full 90 minutes of the last 3 games if you take smalling and lescott out the equation its starting to look a bit thin, to be fair on lescott he has had a solid season, john terry has made more mistakes in one game than lescott has all season, i know who i would prefer, terry needs to sort out his boots, he slips over 5 times a game and if we get to the semi's he is just as likely to assault a foreigner on the pitch than play in the final alo sanchez in the champions league

as for holt, either him or carroll has to go, just because king kenny cant get the best out of carroll dosen't mean he cant be an asset, can you imagine them soft european cbs trying to handle balls upto carroll, in two games against chelsea he DESTROYED terry and if terry is the best cb we have what more can you ask? is it carrolls fault liverpool play one winger (downing) who had 77 shots at goal and played 33 games yet failed to score a single goal (despite taking a penalty) and not even a single assist in the league!!! fullbacks that are told not to cross the ball, they only started playing to carrolls strengths in the chelse games, playing it upto him with back to goal like newcastle did...
as for holt, he might not be the youngest or best striker but he has scored goals and with bent out and rooney suspended i would seriously look at taking two of either crouch, carroll or holt, depending what formation roy plays sturridge, rooney and wellbeck would be my other choices

That's the worst England squad I can recall for the finals of a major tournament. Not Roy's fault, just feels like a general lack of talent. Most players either past their best or not yet making a mark at international level.

Most players either past their best or not yet making a mark at international level. Injuries have played their part as well but there are still come questionable inclusions and omissions. I'm yet to be convinced by Ruddy as a Premier League keeper, let alone international. Downing's stats this season have been much talked-about and Adam Johnson looks a far better player, though he doesn't get enough first-team football at City. As a matter of principle, I wouldn't have Carroll anywhere near the squad but he could cause teams problems. I'd have liked to have seen Crouch in there.

So no place for Ferdinand, Richards, Lennon, Crouch, Carrick, Holt... and kyle walker is out injured i think, but to me that would make micah richards 100% nailed on to start as rb, glenn johnson is one of the worst defenders in the league, if im not mistaken whilst roy was at liverpool he dropped johnson because he didn't rate him! mistake 1 taking johnson over richards mistake 2 taking dowing instead of johnson! wtf mistake 3 not making room for one of crouch, holt or sturridge mistake 4 including a midfield of the barry, lampard, gerrard and an injured parker, no pace, no youth and for the last time they cant play together as for the gks, we have one good keeper and a load of tosh so it was always going to be hart + two others that are not good enough, loach, fielding, butland, carson? with robinson and foster having retired we lack depth. out of that team i would have to go for this team hart jones, terry, cahill, cole walcott, parker, gerrard, young rooney, carroll with oxlade chamberlain coming on if walcott goes missing like usual, milner playing cm if parkers not fit and welbeck coming on as a plan b if we need options upfront

Players in Hodgson's squad who weren't in Capello's last squad: (apart from Gerrard and Rooney) Green, Ruddy, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Young, Carroll, Defoe
Players not in Hodgson's squad who were in Capello's last squad: Carson, Stockdale, Jagielka, Walker, Rodwell, A Johnson, Bent, Sturridge, Agbonlahor, Zamora

Most players either past their best or not yet making a mark at international level. There's absolutely no way it's worse than the squad Fabio took to South Africa, I'd rather all 23 in this one than Heskey, Cole, SWP, Upson, King and Carragher who went to that.

No Richards Sturridge crap Sturridge needs to learn to not be so greedy, as frustrating as players can be. Form has seriously gone off since Christmas, doesn't deserve it. For me the only omissions you can describe as being glaring are Richards and Carrick. Holt has had a good season but he's too old and would only be another Davies/Zamora. Crouch has had an ok season at best, and despite his record at international level, he doesn't get picked for good reason. He gives too many fouls away and no matter who is manager and who else is on the pitch all we do is aimlessley hoof it up to him and hope. Overall, really quite pleased with the squad. A few I don't think are good enough perhaps but either A) will be or B) there aren't better alternatives

Disappointed that Kyle Walker is injured, could be a big blow if Jones plays at RB as I'm not convinced at all he's good enough to play in that position at international level, shame no Richards in the squad. Ferdinand has actually played Europa League followed by PL this season, and also played in a testimonial on Tuesday only 2 days after playing on the final day of the PL season, so he can play games in quick succession, plus he's been in better form than Terry lately. Thats the football reasons sorted, without even going into the moral ones... Downing in with Lennon being excluded altogether makes no sense at all. Up front I share Mrh's view on Crouch/Carroll, and Defoe's inclusion came out of nowhere, that hadn't been predicted at all It was thought his lack of games may count against him, looks quite laughable now that Reading have made an enquiry about him! Surprised at the mentions for Carrick, don't think he's had a stellar season from what i've noticed and there are options in that area. If anything he's become the forgotten man at international level, can't remember when he was last in an England squad let alone played for England. Finally, I note Jack Butland in the squad, not even heard of him, which says everything about England's goalkeeping situation. Makes me think that if Alex McCarthy gets an opportunity in the Prem and acquits himself well then he may get a call up sooner than I expected...(do think he'll get called up within the next 10 years).
