i would say bulgaria minus petrov and berbatov who have both retired, beating netherlands was the shock
germany rested 80% their squad but from what i saw netherlands had a full team out

Bulgaria have been absolutely terrible for the last few years so I would say that's the bigger surprise. The fact they finished bottom of the qualifying group below Wales shows how bad they've become.

So the England squad gets a little bit stronger today with Gareth Barry ruled out through injury and replaced by Phil Jagielka.
The move makes sense as Phil Jones can cover Barry's spot in midfield and Jagielka adds some much-needed depth to the defence.

Solid again tonight, 1-0 against Belgium is a decent result, only Germany had beaten them in their last 15 and I'd say they're one of the two best teams not at the competition, along with Switzerland.
Gary Cahill may well have fractured his jaw though. Ruddy; Walker, Cahill, Dawson, Smalling; Lampard, Barry, Huddlestone, Rodwell, Wilshere; Bent - potential England Injured XI

I'd say they're one of the two best teams not at the competition, along with Switzerland. I wouldn't go that far. They're an improving side with some very good individual players but there are a number of better teams who didn't make it.

In terms of the talent they actually have they're definitely there with Switerland, Bosnia and Turkey are pretty decent teams too but I think Belgium will get to the next World Cup (although their group is wide open, any of the 6 could qualify and I wouldn't be shocked). They're a young team that'll only get better too, they perhaps lack a goalscorer but the likes of Hazard, Fellaini, Dembele, Defour and Witsel in their midfield, I'd take that over ours any day.

Belguim I tip to be a 1/4 finalist team in Brazil (if they qualify). With Vermulen and Kompany holding the fort, Fellaini, has his height for corners and his hair . Dembele I rate quite highly. I have to say Belguim has a brighter prospect then England atm.

Brazil are playing a friendly against Mexico tonight.
World Cup qualifying tends to start two or three years before the tournament itself. Qualifying in Europe starts in September.

Gary Cahill is out of Euro 2012 with a broken jaw. Martin Kelly called up as a replacement.

Gutted for Cahill, ruled out because of what was nothing but a moronic push by the Belgian forward.

I suspect Mertens is suddenly quite relieved Chelsea won the Champions League.

This is beginning to seem more and more like Euro 92.
A squad already weakened due to injuries is further depleted by more injuries just before the tournaments starts, resulting in inexperienced replacements being called up, whose international credentials are still very much in doubt. We also have the prospect of facing the hosts in the final group game...

Gutted for Cahill, ruled out because of what was nothing but a moronic push by the Belgian forward. So it was a foul then? As we weren't sure at the time from top tier halfway up round about the halfway line whether it was a foul or not, and I missed the highlights last night. I was surprised that the guy got booked. Kelly's call up, which was forecast if Cahill didn't make it, means that Jones is now effectively 4th choice CB with Kelly as extra full back cover. 2 blows in a week (didn't consider Barry to be one as a squad player in an area where we had other options), let's hope there are no more...

Yeah, as Cahill was chasing the ball down, with Hart coming the other way, Mertens just blatantly shoved Cahill in the back, sending him flying into Hart, and his jaw smacked against Hart's shoulder.
