Feeder, Maximo Park, Morning Runner, Killers, Boy Kill Boy or Biffy for me. Boy Kill Boy another one of those bands who managed to produce one decent album but just couldnt follow it up. I seem to remember the 2nd album being really bad, some cracking tunes on the 1st though.

Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and of course MAXIMO PARK!
Many others I don't count as they were around before 2002, Feeder for example. Also Arcade Fire has a couple of good songs but the albums as a whole (I own all of them) are very lathargic and go no where.

It's hard not to say Arcade Fire as they're pretty much the only act who've released as many as three great albums without releasing any rubbish, The Futureheads are probably next best in terms of having three excellent albums but they had a dodgy one inbetween, same with Elbow, and Arctic Monkeys. Maximo Park are terrible, to think I'm named after them.

in the last 10 year the 5 bands that i have listened to the most (that appeared on the scene around 2002) are:
arctic monkeys mando diao biffy clyro electric 6 maximo park
and a special mention to boy kill boy, they only had one album worth listening to, i racked up over 600 listens on lastfm so i gave that some hammer when it came out
the rest of my top 10 would be
milburn dogs nine black alps the killers and boy kill boy

Milburn had one or two good songs but the album was awful and Little Man Tate were much the better Sheffield band. Dogs had some cracking songs on that first album (Im sure they did a 2nd). The first Nine Black Alps album is one of the best albums from that period I reckon and they were a great live band. Just a shame they couldnt follow it up
Others have mentioned Acarde Fire but I fully agree with Paddy. They have done a couple of decent songs but are such an over-rated band for me.

i got into milburn before they released anything, their demos were amazing but then they re-recorded them for their album, one or 2 came off ok but most were not as good, still worth a listen, their second album bar one song was pretty poor
little man tate i like, bit more quirky, just never listened to them as much but liked 4 or 5 songs off their first album
dogs were amazing, not to be confused with the awful dogs die in hot cars, their debut album was good but for me their second album has some amazing tunes on that stood the test of time a lot better, i only listen to the second album now
nine black alps had an amazing debut album, up there with boy kill boy but their second album although not as bad as boy kill boy was underwhelming, "everytime i turn" is amazing, "burn faster" "bitter end" and "forget my name" are worth a listen

Still not as overrated as the word 'overrated'.

Id love to enter them in HIT but obviously they had top 40 hits so I cant. Worth checking out though if you like some of the first album stuff. I got the Send In The Boys single by Milburn and I thought all three tracks on that were good but the album was a shocker and the 2nd even worse. The problem both bands had was they got compared to the Arctic Monkeys all the time because they were also from Sheffield. To be fair Milburn did sound a lot like them (Little Man Tate less so in my view) but were actually around before the Arctic Monkeys so they nicked their sound but just made much better songs. Im not sure I have ever listented to the Dogs 2nd album. Ive got a feeling they are still going or they were in the not to distant past at the very least. I didnt mind Dogs Die In Hot Cars that album had some decent singles on it.

Bravery? For one song?
I think a lot of people are waiting to hear more Black Kids, looking doubtful after all this time though.

dogs split up this year, there was a huge gap between their second album and a fairly recent ep and they split up off the back of that. a lot of bands i loved around that time made 1 great album, maybe a half decent (or usually a terrible second if they made it that far) and then split up or vanished into obscurity. the odd one limped along releasing sub standard crap compared to their earlier stuff...
the blueskins the open dogs the zutons kinesis the bravery franz ferdinand little man tate milburn the darkness boy kill boy air traffic the automatic 22-20s nine black alps my red cell the upper room the thrills starsailor the jeevas razorlight klaxons the rakes the pipettes the paddingtons The Ordinary Boys the music the coral the modern hard-fi larrikin love the kooks hot hot heat the feeling delays battle athlete

oh my god, THE CORAL! had forgotten all about them. LOVED them for a while, but i think i started to lose interest after album 3 (or was it 4?)...
delays were good too, i really liked some of the songs on 'you see colours' especially 'long time coming', 'hideaway' and 'valentine' but didn't really inspire me that much.

Hard-Fi's first album was one of the best from that time, but they are an awful live band and its no surprise they havent got anywhere near to producing the goods since. Love the Air Traffic album as well and they tried to do a 2nd album but split before getting chance to do it which was a shame as I felt they were a band who couldve got better. My Red Cell actually got back together and did a couple of gigs last year although I didnt go. The lead singer is part of another band who actually supported Little Man Tate on their last tour. Hadnt realised Dogs had split up but its not a surprise I am surprised they lasted as long as they did. The Kinesis first album is brilliant and they should have been huge but they were just before indie came popular again. They did bring out a 2nd album and split on the same day.
Another couple of bands that spring to mind are Easyworld and Hoggboy. Both should have been bigger than they were, especially Easyworld, but alas they were around at the wrong time.

there was something about kinesis that didn't sound mainstream for me at the time they were around. i liked their first album, but wasn't really surprised they didn't get anywhere. think it might have been the vocals.
agreed about easyworld; they had some great songs. '2nd amendment' was fantastic.
