RIP This means that John Surtees is now the oldest-surviving World Champion (and the earliest champion who is still alive).

Congrats to Bianchi for his and Marussia's first points, moving them ahead of Sauber!
Some stats/facts that I discovered/read elsewhere:
Mercedes equal Ferrari's record of 5 consecutive 1-2 finishes, which they managed in 1952 (when they were allowed to enter more than 2 cars per race) and 2002.
Every race so far this season has seen Williams score either 6 or 10 points.
First time since Korea-India 2012 that the same 3 drivers have finished on the podium in a different order in 2 consecutive races.
First Monaco finishes for Ricciardo and Grosjean. Still no finishes for Maldonado, and no points for Perez, in Monaco.
Whenever Massa has finished 7th this year, Hulkenberg has finished 5th.
SAuber have already had more DNFs this year than in the whole of 2013.
Nico Rosberg has both the same number of podiums and same number of wins as Keke Rosberg (whose last podium was in Monaco).
First time since Spain 2011 that only 4 cars finished on the lead lap.
No race so far this year has been won by the driver leading the championship going into that race (it also happened in every race of 2010).
First time since 2009 that either of the Red Bulls has failed to finish in the top 4 at Monaco.
Best finish for the Lotus name at Monaco since Alessandro Zanardi finished 7th in 1993. Most points since Senna's 1987 win.
Car #13 is the only car not to have managed a top 13 finish so far in 2014.
First Monaco GP since 2007 that neither Williams crashed out of.
First Constructors' points for Marussia - the first team to score their maiden points since Mercedes in Australia 2010 (as there was no Constructors' Championship before 1958).
Excluding Mercedes, the last maiden points-scorers were Force India in Belgium 2009, or Super Aguri in Spain 2007 if teams that had previously scored points under different names are excluded.
Ferrari are now the only team not to have had a race-ending mechanical failure on either car this season (they are yet to have a DNF in 2014).
20th season in a row that at least 1 Ferrari-powered car has set a fastest lap - extends their record.
Raikkonen's 200th GP (including 1 no-start in 2005).
6th race in a row without a pole for Red Bull - equals their string in 2012. First time they have gone 6 races without winning since they started winning in 2009.
Vettel has outqualified his team-mate in Monaco in every odd-numbered year but never in an even-numbered year.
First time since Belgium 2010 that both Saubers dropped out in Q1.
Hamilton equals Mansell's total of 59 podiums.
7 out of the Rosbergs’ 10 wins have been on street circuits.

First time since Spain 2011 that only 4 cars finished on the lead lap. Given that only 3 cars weren't on the lead lap after the second safety car pulled in, and that the leading drivers had all made their final pit stops at that point, this stat really goes to show how fast the first 3 cars were compared to the rest of the field.

Wow indeed! Shame about what happened to Massa (especially having to make his second stop) and Perez.
Interestingly, this is the same point of the year that Brawn's dominance ended in 2009 (there was no Canadian GP that year), and McLaren's 'dominance' ended in 1998 (they had a double DNF in Canada).

I only just spotted the posting about the death of Jack Brabham. Truly one of the greats in F1 racing.
I can remember so many of the drivers from that era - of course 1970 was to be Brabham's last and others of that time would compete beyond that including Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fitipaldi, Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Graham Hill, Ronnie Peterson and Jo Siffert.
Of course Bruce McLaren died tragically in 1970 as did the terrific Austrian driver Jochen Rindt who had amassed enough points to win the driver's championship posthumously.

Some stats that I discovered/read elsewhere:
First time since Spain 2013 that somebody other than Vettel, Rosberg or Hamilton won a race. This was also the first time since that race that the German national anthem was not played on the podium.
Last driver whose first win did not come from pole - Kovalainen in 2008.
Last driver to score his first win before his first pole - Raikkonen in 2003.
Hulkenberg, Bottas, Ricciardo and Bianchi have all scored more points in 2014 than they managed in the whole of 2013.
First win for a driver who made his debut with HRT.
First time since Toro Rosso in Spain 2009 that a team saw both its cars retire on lap 1 (they also crashed into each other).
McLaren keep alive their record of scoring with either both cars or neither car in 2014.
Every driver whose first win has been in a Red Bull has been Australian.
No wins at Tilkedromes for Australian drivers.
Only 3 drivers have crossed the finish line in 1st or 2nd this year.
Hamilton has led 1 lap more than Rosberg this year (207 vs 206).
All 3 podium finishers passed ‘landmark’ career totals in this race – 100, 700, 1500.
3rd time this year Hulkenberg has started 11th and finished 5th.
Massa’s 200th entry (including 2 no-starts).
None of the drivers who went out in Q1 finished the race (although Gutierrez was classified).
First Canadian GP in which 1 Force India has scored and the other hasn’t.
Ricciardo and Button were the only points-scorers to finish in a position that they hadn’t previously finished in this year.
Red Bull keep alive their record of leading at least 1 lap every year since 2007.
First time since Japan-Korea-India 2012 that a team locked out the front row 3 races in a row.
First time Hamilton has been outqualified by a team-mate in Canada. Massa is still yet to outqualify a team-mate in Canada.
7 consecutive races without pole and 5 consecutive races without a front-row start for Vettel – both occurring for the first time since he joined Red Bull.
First time since Malaysia 2006 that both Williams cars started in the top 5. Thankfully this race went better for them than that one did…
Only previous occasion that Massa has outqualified both Ferraris – Turkey 2005.
3rd race in a row that Hulkenberg was 11th in Q2 (he was promoted to 10th in Spain).
26 races without a McLaren pole – equals their 2010-11 drought.
First points for Ricciardo and Hulkenberg in Canada. Hulkenberg has now only failed to score in Istanbul (only raced in 2010) and Yas Marina.
Longest streak of Mercedes-powered wins stays at 6 (also happened in 2005).
First time since 1996 that neither Ferrari finished in the top 5 in Canada.
Hamilton has as many DNFs as wins in Canada.
Williams’ best result has always been 5th or 7th this year – and Massa was running 5th when he crashed!
First double DNF for Marussia since Korea 2010 (when they were Virgin).
89th race with a British driver in the points – record for Britain, but trails Germany’s 111.
Other instances of both cars in a team suffering similar mechanical issues almost simultaneously: McLaren in Luxembourg 1997 (both blew up whilst running 1-2) BAR in Malaysia 2005 (both blew up early on after deliberately retiring from the previous race so as to start with fresh engines)

Some very promising news regarding Michael Schumacher. His family has said that he's out of his coma and has left hospital, and will be continuing his rehab at home. Full story here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-27868787

Grid for Austria: 1 Massa 2 Bottas 3 Rosberg 4 Alonso 5 Ricciardo 6 Magnussen 7 Kvyat 8 Raikkonen 9 Hulkenberg (no time in Q3) 10 Hamilton (no time in Q3) 11 Button 12 Vettel 13 Maldonado 14 Vergne 15 Grosjean 16 Perez (penalty from Canada) 17 Sutil 18 Gutierrez 19 Bianchi 20 Kobayashi 21 Ericsson 22 Chilton (penalty from Canada) Both Hulkenberg and Hamilton did set laps in Q3, but they were deleted as the drivers had breached track limits. Massa's first pole since Brazil 2008 puts him 4th (behind Mario Andretti, Giancarlo Fisichella, and Riccardo Patrese) in the list of longest gaps between 2 pole positions. It also means that every pole position so far this year has been scored by a driver who had previously raced at the circuit in question... Williams' last 6 poles have been scored by 6 different drivers, and in 6 different seasons.

Some stats/facts from various places:
Every Finnish driver who has started more than 1 F1 race has managed at least 1 podium.
First 2014 race to be won by the driver leading the championship going into it.
First time in 2014 that someone other than Mercedes or Red Bull has qualified in the top three (although Bottas had already had a P3 start due to Ricciardo's penalty in Bahrain).
First front row without either a Red Bull or Mercedes since Brazil 2012.
Williams' largest single-race points haul (27).
Force India have overtaken Sauber (excluding BMW Sauber) as the constructor with the most points without a win (423 vs 422).
The last 3 Austrian GPs (2002, 2003, 2014) have had 3 different points-scoring systems - first such instance since 1959-61.
3rd year in a row that Vettel has retired from Race 8.
Vettel has DNF'd in all the races that Rosberg has won this year. He has also retired from every race that Webber has turned up to this year.
Perez is the 3rd driver (after Tony Brooks and Mario Andretti) to score his first 3 fastest laps with 3 different teams.
First time since Brazil 2010 (Hulkenberg, Vettel, Webber) that none of the top 3 on the grid were champions. Last with no future champion either: Brazil 2009 (Barrichello, Webber, Sutil).
This was first race where no driver of the "2010 new teams" ever held last position of the race.
Possible reason for Raikkonen not quitting yet - his career points total is 988.
Alonso's spell in the lead means that he has led at least 1 lap every year since 2003, and Ferrari have led at least 1 lap every year since 1993.
Williams scored the last pole at the Osterreichring, the first at the A-1 Ring, and the first at the Red Bull Ring.
3rd time this year that Vettel has missed Q3 - 1 more than in 2010-2013 combined.
First time since Brazil 2010 that there were no world champions in the top 3 grid spots.
First time since their return in 2010 that Mercedes have won a race in which neither of their cars started on pole.
All-Mercedes top 4 - only previous occurrence was Britain 1955.
3rd fastest lap for Perez and 3rd for Force India, but Perez's first with Force India.
First season in which Vettel has had 3 mechanical DNFs.

Some stats/facts that I discovered/read elsewhere:
First time since India 2013 that 3 different teams officially finished in the top 3 (although the drivers who stood on the podium in Australia were all from different teams).
First time since Spain 2013 that none of the top 3 on the grid finished on the podium. First time since Europe 1999 that none of the podium finishers started in the top 5 (on that occasion they started 14th, 10th, and 15th).
First time since Spain 2013 that no German driver finished on the podium. First time since Brazil 2012 that no German driver finished in the top 4.
Alonso has scored more points in the British GP than anybody else (95) - obviously this is skewed by the points system changes.
Button has crossed the line 4th in all the 2014 races in which a Mercedes has failed to finish (he was promoted to 3rd in Australia).
Hamilton has won every race with post-race testing (Bahrain, Spain, Britain) so far this year.
Both of Hamilton’s Silverstone wins (of which this one was the closer) have come on 6 July (the same day that Roger Federer lost a 5-set thriller in the Wimbledon final). Both have come a year after he scored pole in Britain (2007 and 2013 are his only 2 poles).
Pole-sitter and winner were the reverse of last year’s race (last year Hamilton was on pole but Rosberg won). The same happened at Silverstone in 2011-12 (Alonso and Webber), as well as Monaco 2000-01 (Coulthard and M Schumacher), and probably others as well.
Hamilton’s 5th win of the season – equalling 2008 as his personal record.
First time this year that anyone other than Rosberg, Hamilton, or Ricciardo has crossed the finish line in the top 2.
Biggest gap between 1st and 2nd on the grid since Australia 1997 – another race where the pole-sitter failed to finish and one team had both its cars outside 107%.
9th consecutive Mercedes-powered pole – equals the start of 1998.
4th race in a row that Hamilton has been outqualified by his team-mate – first time this has happened.
First time since Bahrain 2013 that both Force Indias reached Q3.
First time Alonso missed Q3 since Europe 2012 (a race he went on to win).
First time Alonso missed Q2 since Malaysia 2010 (on that occasion as well, both Ferraris missed Q2).
No Ferrari-powered car qualified in the top 10 – first time since Singapore 2009.
Alonso’s longest win drought (in terms of number of races) since he started winning.
First Mercedes DNF at Silverstone.
First Ferrari DNF at Silverstone since Barrichello in 2000.
McLaren’s longest winless streak since their 1993-1997 one.
All of Hamilton’s wins in 2014 have been in races with fewer than 70 laps. 2 of Rosberg’s 3 wins have been in races with more than 70 laps (the exception was Australia). Neither driver won the only race with exactly 70 laps.

Some stats that I discovered/read elsewhere:
Sutil's 119th race without a podium - now an outright record.
2nd time in the past 10 years that a driver who started 20th at Hockenheim finished on the podium (Montoya finished 2nd in 2005).
First time this year that Vettel has finished ahead of Ricciardo in a race where both have finished.
First time this year that a Mercedes has finished a race (i.e. not retired) outside the top 2.
14th 17th-place finish for Marussia - a record.
First time since Malaysia 2010 that there was no World Champion in the top 5 on the grid or no British driver in Q3.
24th consecutive race to be won by Red Bull or Mercedes - longest such 2-team streak since Ferrari and McLaren in 2006-08.
882nd start for car #6 - a new record.
In the last 14 GPs, Paul di Resta has scored more points and out qualified and out raced his team mate more often than Pastor Maldonado.
In the last 50 GPs, Michael Schumacher has scored more points than Pastor Maldonado (and both drivers have managed 1 podium in that period).
1-2 on the grid and in the race were both drivers with Finnish nationality (although Rosberg represents Germany).
Second race in a row that Bottas has finished 2nd and Massa has retired on lap 1 after being involved in an incident with a Nordic driver.
300th podium for Williams (as a constructor) and for Mercedes (as an engine manufacturer).
No change to the Drivers' Championship order following this race.
First time there have been 10 consecutive Mercedes-powered pole positions (previous best 9 in 1998).
2 years without a pole position for Ferrari.
First time both Force Indias have reached Q3 2 races in a row.
Vettel's longest winless streak since he started winning.
Hamilton and Coulthard have now managed the same number of podiums.
First time Hamilton has officially been overtaken this season (I believe the official statistics exclude first-lap passes, mechanical failures, and passes that did not stick).
Force India's 10th consecutive points-scoring race - equals their record.

Sutil's 119th race without a podium - now an outright record. Sutil has no right to be in F1 anymore. He's had far too many chances to demonstrate he has a modicum of talent, and has failed every time. A travesty that he is blocking a seat which could be taken by a younger, more capable driver.
