9. Guns N' Roses – November Rain www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE"November Rain" is a power ballad by the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses. Written by the band's lead singer Axl Rose, the song was released as a single in 1992 from their third studio album, Use Your Illusion I (1991). It features a sweeping orchestral backing and is one of Guns N' Roses' longest songs. "November Rain" peaked at number 3 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the longest song in history to enter the top ten of that chart. Since its release, the song has sold over 1 million copies worldwide. So this easily got my maximum points in the recent HRI

8. Manic Street Preachers – A Design for Life www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfEoVxy7VDQThe title was inspired by the debut Joy Division EP record An Ideal for Living. The opening line of the song 'Libraries gave us power' was inspired by the legend at the top of the former library in Pillgwenlly, Newport, some 15 miles from the band's home town of Blackwood in Wales: 'Knowledge is Power'. The next line, 'then work came and made us free', refers to the German slogan Arbeit macht frei that featured above the gates of Nazi concentration camps and which had been used previously by the band in their song "The Intense Humming of Evil" on the album The Holy Bible. I saw them live for the first time tis year and they were brilliant

7. R.E.M. – Everybody Hurts www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rOiW_xY-kcMuch of the song was written by drummer Bill Berry, although as R.E.M. shares songwriting credits among its members. Guitarist Peter Buck commented on the making of the track saying "'Everybody Hurts' is similar to 'Man on the Moon'. Bill brought it in, and it was a one-minute long country-and-western song. It didn't have a chorus or a bridge. It had the verse... it kind of went around and around, and he was strumming it. We went through about four different ideas and how to approach it and eventually came to that Stax, Otis Redding, "Pain in My Heart" kind of vibe

6. James – Laid www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yXqRiXMru0Released in 1993 it only reached #25 in the chart but In the late 1990s and early 2000s the song gained some additional exposure and popularity when it was used as the theme song for the American Pie films. I saw James live in 2000 with Hupin but my highlight has to be that he regularly sang it in karaoke bars after a few to many pints

5. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikegNo surprise I gave this one maximum points in the recent Haven Rock Idol, It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind (1991). Kurt Cobain revealed that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was an attempt to write a song in the style of the Pixies, a band he greatly admired. He explained: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard". Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, at the time the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall. Hanna meant that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore

4. Radiohead – Karma Police www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uYWYWPc9HUAnother band I saw for the first time this year, I've had a good year ticking off my bucket list of artists I want to see live but haven't yet, might be a good idea for a new topic? anyway, wow, what a song, best thing they have ever done, so glad I got the chance to see them

3. R.E.M. – Losing My Religion www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwtdhWltSIg"Losing My Religion" is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. The song was released as the first single from the group's 1991 album Out of Time. Built on a mandolin riff, "Losing My Religion" was an unlikely hit for the group, garnering heavy airplay on radio as well as on MTV due to its critically acclaimed music video. The song became R.E.M.'s highest-charting hit in the United States. In the song, Michael Stipe sings the lines "That's me in the corner/That's me in the spotlight/Losing my religion". The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means losing one's temper or civility, or "being at the end of one's rope.". No surprise REM featured as a category in HRI with them featuring heavily in my top 10

2. Green Day – Good Riddance [Time Of Your Life] www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnQ8N1KacJcSuch a departure from the early Green Day sound, a bold move to release this when your fanbase is mostly built the underground punk scene but its simplicity makes it my favorite Green Day song and they have a LOT of very good songs. Although it was not issued as a single at the time of its release in the United States, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" sold over 2.6 million copies as a digital download in the country. The song was certified Gold in the United Kingdom for sales of 400,000.

1. Foo Fighters – Everlong www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBG7P-K-r1Y"Everlong" is the second single released from Foo Fighters' second studio album, The Colour and the Shape (1997). (What an album mind). "Everlong" was written against the background of the break-up of Dave Grohl's first marriage to photographer Jennifer Youngblood. Having returned home to Virginia for Christmas 1996, Grohl turned the initial riff into a complete song and wrote the lyrics after falling for Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt: "That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly." Comedian and late night talk show host David Letterman has called "Everlong" his favorite song, citing it as having helped him through his recovery from heart surgery in 2000. Foo Fighters were invited to serve as the musical act on the February 21, 2000 episode of Late Show with David Letterman, the first since his surgery, to perform "Everlong." Grohl stated that he was "blown away" after learning that Letterman was a fan of their music. The band went as far as cancelling a stop on a tour in South America so they could perform, explaining that "We just felt like we had to be there. Not only was it an honor to be asked, but it felt like something we had to do – because he had always meant so much to us. And that started this connection that we've had for years. It's f***ing cool, you know?" On May 20, 2015, the band returned to perform "Everlong" again, the night of Letterman's final episode. The six-minute-long performance was set to a montage of footage spanning Letterman's career It might even have the best music video of the 90's too
