Latest Odds for Leading Contenders from William Hill:
6/5 Jessica Ennis-Hill 15/8 Andy Murray 4/1 Tyson Fury 10/1 Lewis Hamilton 20/1 Chris Froome 20/1 Jam1e Vardy 20/1 Wayne Rooney
Kinda surprised to see Jessica E-H as favourite - would have thought Tyson Fury was a shoe-in with Murray and Hamilton having won it before.
Also surprised that Mo Farah is only 33/1 - would expect him to be top 3.
Surely Team of the Year must be The Davis Cup Team. Men's Cricket Team may have won The Ashes but had too much Downside and Women's Football Team "only" won Bronze.

Not surprised Jess is favourite at all and I'd expect her to win. Her widespread appeal is much greater than Fury's ever will be. I suspect the doping allegations surrounding Alberto Salazar will count heavily against Farah.
Agree about the Davis Cup team - hard to see anyone beating them. Leon Smith could be up for Coach of the Year too.

I was thinking that a Davis Cup win might tip the scales for Murray but on reflection I am persuaded that it might be 'double counting' and it is fairer to acknowledge it in the team category.
I admit that I have no idea who Ennis- Hill is!

Mercedes GP, nee Tyrrell, should probably have won the team award - had it not been for the Davis Cup team. It's astonishing that no motor racing team has won it since 1962. We take for granted that every world constructors' champion ever has been British, with the sole exceptions of Ferrari and Matra - and even the latter had a British engine, was run from Britain and had a British driver win most of its points.
Quite a weekend for British sport. World heavyweight champion, Davis Cup, F1 champion confirmed...

We take for granted that every world constructors' champion ever has been British, with the sole exceptions of Ferrari and Matra And Renault (France), Red Bull (Austria), and Mercedes (Germany), although the nationalities are based on ownership of the team rather than their headquarters (all 3 of these teams have factories in the UK). In fact, the only British constructor to have won the Constructors Championship in the 21st century has been Brawn GP in 2009 (although McLaren would have won 2007 if the FIA hadn't had a vendetta against them).

Immediately after the Ashes win, I thought they had the team award more or less in the bag. However, things have gone a bit pear-shaped since then. The Davis Cup team would now seem to be the likely winners, with Andy Murray winning some extra votes for the individual award.

The only thing Austrian about Red Bull is the sponsor. It's like calling Ferrari an American team because their lead sponsor is still Philip Morris (albeit sub rosa). Rename them Toleman, Stewart and Tyrrell, as they all started life, and it is much clearer.

Out of the list of favourites Ennis-Hill is the obvious choice for me. What she did in the summer was incredible. Must admit I was surprised to see Tyson Fury so high up, but then i'm not really into boxing (used to be more so 15-20 years ago I would say) and up until the last week wasn't really aware of him! I've touched on it in the tennis thread, but I've hoped for a while that if GB won the Davis Cup that Leon Smith won the Coach of the Year. I don't think he's got the credit he deserves over the last 5 years, possibly because GB's ties at lower levels haven't got the TV coverage that the World Group ties have had. The Russia tie in 2013 for example when we come back from 0-2 down to win was only available online on the LTA website. Quite simply without him GB wouldn't have been in a position to get into the World Group. He's made big decisions, and sometimes late ones, and pretty much every time they've worked. I think his Davis Cup record stands at 12 wins and only two losses. Of the two losses being critical he made the wrong call for Italy away last year when he selected Andy to play in the doubles, but the other a defeat to Belgium in 2012 I seem to recall he couldn't select the team he wanted due to injury (though that tie seemed to largely pass me by at the time - not sure I saw any of it). In short he's got a near faultless record. He helps players to play above themselves, and as an aside he didn't do a bad job coaching Kyle Edmund earlier in the month in Buenos Aires! (Kyle won the title). I was thinking that a Davis Cup win might tip the scales for Murray but on reflection I am persuaded that it might be 'double counting' and it is fairer to acknowledge it in the team category. I admit that I have no idea who Ennis- Hill is! Did you not watch any of the Olympics in 2012?
I'll let you off and assume you hadn't realised she'd changed her name and used to be called Jessica Ennis

I did watch some of the Olympics but, to be honest, the women's heptathlon would not have been high on my list of 'must watch' events.

Looking at the list, their have been some great achievements this year. No way should Andy Murray win the individual award though, the Davis Cup triumph was a team success and this should be celebrated by winning the team award.

I don't think anyone could really argue with the final list of contenders.
Interesting no male footballers nominated.
Tyson Fury gets my vote this year.

Great that Max Whitlock and Adam Peaty were recognised. Adam is also a world record holder and should bring home gold in Rio - next year may be his time as he is an awesome talent.
No stand out for me this year, but would be happy with Jess or Lewis.

Interesting no male footballers nominated. If Jamie Vardy played for Man Utd I'm sure he'd have been nominated, just shows really!
