The new chart sees the Tremeloes getting the highest entry with a song translated from Italian this time. That's been done a few times before. Amen Corner "sell out" and cover the song by American Breed. This is not a "karaoke" cover but they have changed the tune of the verse (for the better, in my opinion).

This week's new entries has the highest new entry as Manfred Mann's cover of Bob Dylan's "Quinn the Eskimo", a song he never offically recorded up to this point.
The 3rd highest entry is the debut for Status Quo, and is one of two debuts in these few weeks by an artist for whom their first hit is not the style of music with which they are normally associated.
Paul Mauriat's song is an instrumental version of Vicky Leandros's entry to the 1967 Eurovision song contest that only came 4th for Luxembourg. She would win for them with Apres Toi a few years later.
Among those failing to enter this week is a disc-jockey at a time when DJs normally only played records and didn't make them.

"Anniversary Waltz" was my # 1, sadly this song is not available on Youtube anymore.
The song was published in 1941. It has been covered many times, most popular versions were from Vera Lynn, Connie Francis and Bing Crosby.

had it been released 2 weeks earlier it would have charted as there were far fewer songs on my list in those weeks and Solomon King might not have got in on a later week.

A posthumous #1 hit for Otis Redding goes straight in at the top. I think this is only the 2nd posthumous #1 in my chart. Buddy Holly reached the top in 1960 with "True Love Ways". Eddie Cochran came close with "Weekend" (not Three Steps To Heaven) peaking at #2.
The Move enter quite high with "Fire Brigade" and a song that was #1 in the UK chart for Louis Armstrong enters at #11. He is still alive at this point, aged 67.

You did a misprint in the previous chart, 4th week at # 1 in chart, but 5th week at # 1 in comment.
I never have any posthumous #1s in my chart, because comebacks of old singles are illegal. New posthumous music material is not very frequent thing. I can remember only top 5 hit "The Light Comes from Within" for Linda McCartney after her death.

Dock of the Bay was recorded just before he died though, so would have probably been released anyway. The same with Sam Cooke's "Shake" which charted just after he died.
John Lennon had only just recorded a whole album when he was shot. So that was all "new" music too.
Roy Orbison similarly had recorded an album just before he died.
Queen had planned to release "Those were the days of our lives" anyway, but the re-release of Bohemian Rhapsody was not planned. They did know of course that Freddie was dying, perhaps why they rushed to record "Made In Heaven" so soon after Innuendo.
Many, like Otis Redding, were active pop stars who died in accidents whilst in the process of commuting on tour. That they travelled so much exposed them to more risk.
Otis Redding was only 26. Didn't even make it to the 27 club. We can assume there would have been a lot more great music from him that he never got to write.

-- ( -- ) There Was A Time - James Brown
Otis Redding remains at #1, the Move go up to #2 with a great pop song.
The highest new entry by Eric Burdon & The Animals is over 7 minutes and has 2 or 3 parts to it. We've had very long tracks already (Take 5, Like A Rolling Stone, Light My Fire, all #1s on this chart). This one though feels like it's the start of "progressive" rock. Quite an epic.
Next up, two singles that reached #1 in the UK. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich finally got one with this song. More surprisingly so did Esther & Abi Ofarim which sounds like Israel's answer to the New Vaudeville Band, and was actually co-written by Mason "Classical Gas" Williams. This chart had an Israeli artist reach #1 in 1967 (Topol).
Grapefruit sing a song about a woman called Delilah. Not many songs put that name in the title. I wonder if anyone else will use that name in a song.

One of the classic guitar riffs, but this song was not a major UK or US hit, although it charted in both. Cream got to #2 in this chart with "I Feel Free", and we'll see if they can better or match that with this song.
The 3rd new entry is somewhat psychedelic rock, maybe a bit bluesy. What it certainly isn't is country music. So this is the 2nd example of an entry by an artist usually associated with a completely different type of music, as the lead singer is Kenny Rogers.

The epic from Eric Burdon & The Animals climbs to #1. I have marked this as the 3rd #1 as there were two #1s simply credited to The Animals but Eric Burdon was a member of the band at the time.
Two songs containing the name Delilah in the chart.
A new entry for the Mills Brothers, which OCC followers would tell you had just one week at #10 with "Glow Worm" but we know of course they were popular in the 1940s and "Paper Doll" was a long running #1 in 1943-44, during World War II. "Cab Driver" reached #23 in the USA. The father John Mills died in December 1967 (aged 78). Herbert, Harry and Donald were all in their 50s at the time of this hit.

Tom Jones gets his 2nd #1, almost exactly 3 years after his first.
One of those songs I didn't know what a cover: or rather I thought that the original of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was by the Supremes with the Temptations and didn't know there was an earlier charted version.
The Monkees get a hit with an unusual spelling of a name that, with its normal spelling, would later produce two NM #1s. One of those by the lead singer of the band who enters at #38 this week.

The retro chart returns and there is no change in the top 3. The UK #1 for Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett (sometimes he's given primary credit, sometimes secondary and sometimes none at all). It reached #2 in the USA peaking behind the song it kept off the top in the UK.
Paper Dolls are a girl-group. They enter above Simon & Garfunkel who combine singing an old folk song with "Canticle", an anti-war chant that Paul Simon wrote.

-- ( -- ) I Got The Feelin' - James Brown
No change in the top 2 but it's a week for big entries.
Two big names, the most giant being The Beatles but they only get the 3rd highest entry. Cliff Richard has had 3 NM #1s during the 1960s, the last of those 5 years ago with "Summer Holiday" which was also his biggest hit to date. This is the UK entry to Eurovision for 1968 and of course we are hosting the contest this year as we won it last year.
The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" was written by Paul McCartney with a "Fats Domino" sound in mind. Later on Fats Domino actually recorded his own version of this song too. Lady Madonna is another of his characters to join the ranks of Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie. In this case she's a single mother somehow bringing up a lot of children although she doesn't have much money. (Miss Ciccone is 9 years old at this time and the song isn't about her).
Perhaps surprising then that a girl-group enters above them too, but Captain Of Your Ship is such a great song. Later on there was a bit of a dispute between them as to who exactly was Reparata, when the lead singer on this song released a song under that name called "Shoes".
As well as Madonna we also have a Maggie character. Not sure who she is and whether she may or may not. Just one of those lovely 60s songs.
There's one other entry in the top 40 right at the bottom. Billy Vera had a US #1 19 years later, and there's a version of Spotify of him doing this song with his later band but the proper version is a duet with Judy Clay.

So this is my birthday chart of 1968, and Cliff Richard climbs to #1.
Bobby Goldsboro gets the highest entry with a song that was a UK #2 hit for him twice. The first time it peaked behind "Young Girl" (but he got revenge in the USA where the tables were turned). The second time it will be behind "Bye Bye Baby" and I'll probably be charting neither, "Honey" because it's already charted now and "Bye Bye Baby" I charted the original and not sure what my policy will be on covers when I reach 1975. (There was also another UK hit version of that song that I didn't chart). Meanwhile "Young Girl" remains at #7 so that's may be the target for "Honey" to reach here.
The next two entries have a connection: I'm sure you can work that out.
I think "Tapioca Tundra" is the start of the Monkees being a more independent act and not managed anymore and of course the start of the slide of their success.
"I Got You On My Mind" was a minor hit for Dorian Gray in 1968 and a bigger one for White Plains later with Tony Burrows on vocals, and was written by Greenaway and Cook.

The highest new entry is a catchy hit by the Herd, led by Peter Frampton but looking forward in time there is more significance in the new entry just below it. Fleetwood Mac make their chart debut with a song with bluesy guitar.
Some though would rather Jack.. or Jacky whose real name is Jackie Lee and enters with a theme to a TV show (and is not on Spotify).
The last new entry comes from Australia's Easybeats, who did have more than one hit.
