81 Only Tongue Can Tell – Trashcan Sinatras
First appearance in the top 100 for a true new band, everything we had so far have been acts who have had at least 1 hit. They have another song to come much higher this 2nd single is great bit of jangly indie pop. The Scottish band got to #77 with this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g_bsdqeVfg

80 One Love – The Stone Roses
Was it disappointing, a little, is it still good yes of course it is. What we thought would be the first single from their 2nd album actually was the last thing we will get from them for a long while due to record company issues. It was still much awaited and gives them their biggest hit so far peaking at #4.

79 Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Second entry for Red Got Chili Peppers this is one I discovered through our rock themed Student Union. It was also the first time I found out that Stevie Wonder actually made cool music before the 80s. This was their breakthrough hit in the US were it went all the way to #4, it reached #29 in the UK.

78 Grey Cell Green – Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Early single from the Neds which kinda passed me by at the time but now its one of my favourites, they really don't sound like anyone else on this well maybe a bit Mudhoney. This one was on their debut EP which reached #92.

77 Joey – Concrete Blonde
The album 'Bloodletting' was constantly on in my girlfriends flat for about 3 months so it really was our soundtrack at the time. The big song was the power ballad 'Joey'. My girlfriends flatmate was greatly offended when I said 'Joey' sounds like a Roxette song but really is it that far away from 'It Must Have Been Love'. This single reached #19 in the US.

76 Doctor Jeep - Sisters of Mercy
Second single taken from their new album 'Vision Thing' and for me the best song on the album. It was boosted again by an amazing 12"remix which Mark Goodier played a lot. This reached #37 in the UK.

75 Kool Thing – Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth were one of those bands that my regular indie night played every week but I never bought anything by them until 1992. This is one of their very best though and really is a cool thing. Their debut major label single it reached #81 in the UK.

74 Blaze Of Glory - Jon Bon Jovi
From cool to getting uncool. Yes we all still loved Jon Bon Jovi in 1990 but it was getting harder as rock was changing. This is really good though especially as its like a followup to 'Wanted Dead Or Alive'. It was a US number one though and reached #13 in the UK.

73 Different Drum – The Lemonheads
Another band that got played a lot at Student Nights this and their cover of 'Luka', I again wasn't really into them yet but that would change big time with their next album. This cover of the Mike Nesmith song only made the indie charts in the UK. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XipsuDA89-g

72 Vogue - Madonna
Highest entry for Madonna in 1990 and not really much more to say about this you all know it. It was a worldwide number one including both the UK and US.

71 Listen To Your Heart – Roxette
First of two big ballads for Roxette, we start with the heavier Heart like 'Listen To Tour Heart'. Not surprisingly this was huge in the US giving them another chart topper. It would reach #6 on re-issue in the UK.

70 What Time Is Love? [Live at Trancentral Mix] – The KLF
Probably the most exciting band in dance music in 1990 and they only get better and better from here, Yes it has all the usual things like acid house breaks and a big rap but somehow it is almost stadium house music. The song has been floating around for some time and will get released again in different versions. This first hit version peaked at #5 but it would reach #4 in 1991.

69 All Together Now – The Farm
Not my favourite Farm single but I was really happy with how well this song did for them but i really did get a bit sick of it. Over the years it has become a bit of a football anthem. It reached #4 in the UK and was a big Xmas hit.

68 Hello – The Beloved
I had a compilation called 'Rave' which I have worn away to nothing, many of the songs on this list were on it including the next two. I really liked The Beloved as a dance act but now they release a proper pop single. And like Billy Joel last year we have another list song. It gave them their first top 20 during the January lull reaching #19.

67 And Stones - Lovers All Around Mix – The Blue Aeroplanes
There were some unlikely bands jumping on the indie dance bandwagon and the R.E.M of Bristol were certainly very unlikely. I had already bought their album 'Swagger' and 'And Stones' was already one of the best tracks but this remix just turned it into a total banger. The brilliant guitar work and that killer beat made it a indie floorfiller. It reached #62 in the UK. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NME2Z_Pozc

66 My Rising Star – Northside
Every band in this batch so far was on my 'Rave' compilation. This for me was a step up from the novelty of 'Can You Take a Trip?' but really it was totally off its time although musically I think it superb just a weak generic song really. This reached #32 in the UK. Can't believe I'm at 66 and still slightly slagging songs off, this shouldn't be happening.

65 Falling – Julee Cruise
Breaking up this indie dance party is the sublime theme to the must watch show of 1990, Twin Peaks. It was completely nutty but we were all clued to it and all had a favourite characters and crushes on the show. Madchen Amick for me. Unlike anything else around it was a UK top 10 reaching #7.

64 18 And Life – Skid Row
In 1990 they were the hottest new rock band, they had the looks and songs to follow GunsnRoses to the top of the charts and they went off to a very good start. This was a brilliant power ballad, in the true sense, but we already knew that time was being called on hair metal. It reached #4 in the US and #12 in the UK.

63 The Speed Of The Beat Of My Heart – Horse
A new band from Scotland who have been releasing stronger and stronger singles but for me Horse never had a better pop single than this, again its timing its maybe just a little too 80s for now and hence missed the top 40. Horse is still one of the best vocalists to come out of Scotland though, this reached #81 in the UK.

62 The Storm – World Of Twist
We return to indie dance with the very odd psychedelic World of Twist, must admit this still sounds brilliant guess its a little timeless, it could have came out in 1969 or 2009. They never made the top 40 though this was their biggest hit reached #42.
