No it wasn't! 'One Of Us' did NOT reach No.1 in the 'Melody Maker' Chart. It reached No.1 in the 'New Musical Express' Chart - for 1 Week. As did 'Chiquitita', in 1979 - also for 1 Week. I have an 'NME' Singles Chart Book, which shows each Weekly Chart.

'Eagle' was an ABBA 'A' Side in several Countries in Mid-1978. It reached the Top 10 in Germany, & The Netherlands etc.
Epic Records decided to not bother releasing it in the UK, or Ireland, & Atlantic Records decided not to bother in the USA & Canada.
It was never the 'B' Side of any ABBA Single.

Does anyone know what Madonna's Best Selling UK Single is?
Sometimes I hear that it is, 'Into The Groove', & at other times I'm told it is, 'Like A Virgin'.
'HOLIDAY'
How many did this Single sell in the UK?
It reached No.6 in 1984 - so what was its 1984 Sale?
How many did it sell in 1985, when it reached No.2?
Or in 1991, when it was a No.5 Hit?
Can anyone give the Sales for it, for each of those Years?

Is it true that one of the Choirs was made up of Disabled people? Does that not make the name of the 'Show' rather inappropriate?

Yes, & Men At Work achieved it in 1983, & where are they now? Legends are only judged by TIME - not by 'Feats Of The Present'.
The Beatles, ABBA, & Queen can all sell records, Decades after they started out. We will see how Coldplay are doing in the 2020's, & 2030's - IF they are still Charting, then they will be 'Legends'.....
Besides Rod Stewart & Coldplay, the only other UK Acts to manage the UK/USA No.1 Feat, are The Beatles, (twice in 1964), & Davy Jones, in 1967 - as one of The Monkees.

'The Mail On Sunday' sells an average of 2.2 Million copies each Sunday.
This means that the 'Free' McFly Album will 'sell' about** as many copies as McFly's entire UK Singles & Albums Sales so far - if we add in maybe 200,000 to 300,000 extra Sales of the 'Paper that Sunday - by McFly Fans who want the Album.
McFly are not a big selling Singles or Albums Group in the UK, & never will be.
** = Or not far off.

Seeing as ABBA are widely regarded as the best 'Pure Pop' Group of all time, I thought that I would Link to a Clip that they made for the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest Semi Finals. It has never been shown on UK TV. I thought I'd add it here, seeing as the Eurovision Song Contest is on Saturday, & ABBA were the biggest Act to come from it. (Celine Dion too - she Won in 1988). It later came out on DVD as, 'The Last Video'. (Someone tells me that it was shown on Channel 4 in 2004 - but, if it was, I missed it). In the Video, ABBA are Mini PUPPETS, who go for a Record Company Audition in 1974 - as ABBA. Much of the dialogue is from ABBA Song Titles & Lyrics - hence why it sounds so odd. All 4 Real members of ABBA are in it - Agnetha & Frida appear at an 'Observation Window' - as do Cher, & 'Eddie'- Iron Maiden's 'Mascot'. UK Comedian Rik Mayall is the Record Company Manager. I think that it is very good, & very amusing:, THE LINK www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpdhjhuHoUw Orthon7

The Sales make no sense - Elvis Presley sold far more than 148 Million Records. So, why is Tom Parker only 'credited' with 148 Million?
It looks to me like the Article is based soley on USA Sales. The USA is not the World.
There was Brian Epstein - The Beatles Manager. Stig Andersson - ABBA's Manager, & so on.
ABBA were not huge in the USA, but they certainly were outside the USA. The Article is nonsense - another American-centic, biased, distorted, waste of time.

I heard - BBC - that she has sold anything from 70 Million to 100 Million Records in Russia. She is certainly very pretty.

In 3 of Monday's UK Tabloids, there were half page Adverts for 'Hard Candy'. The Adverts were in colour.
They were by Tesco, & said that 'Hard Candy' is £9 in that Super Market Chain. PLUS - if you buy it in Tesco, you can have 1 of 4 other Madonna CD's FREE!
The 4 are - 'The Immaculate Collection', 'Music', 'Ray Of Light', & 'COADF'.
Will Tesco 'sales' of those other 4 Albums be counted towards the Charts, when you do not have to pay a penny for them?

It is a very weak Madonna Single - she has tried so hard to sound 'Modern', that she forgot to give the Single a TUNE!
It will either be her 13th UK No.2 Hit, or her 13th UK No.1 - but, it does not deserve to be either. (13 No.2's by counting her 2003 Hit, ('Me Against The Music'), with Britney Spears, & the fact that 'Crazy For You' was No.2 in both 1985 & 1991).
In the future she may be wiser to 'Sample' ABBA again, (as on 'Hung Up'), as at least ABBA knew how to come up with catchy TUNES! Still, 'Hard Candy' should see her become the first Female Singer to have 10 UK No.1 Albums - at present she is tied on 9 No.1 Albums with ABBA - with Agnetha & Frida being the only other 2 Females to sing on as many as 9 No.1 Albums here.....(Queen & U2 are also on 9 UK No.1 Albums).

The UK Sales, (claim), figure for, 'I Know Him So Well', is too high. It sold about 823,000 in the UK - not 960,000. 'Dancing Queen' is the only ABBA Single that outsold it, in the UK - 940,000. 'I Know Him So Well', would have outsold 'Dancing Queen', had it really sold 960,000.
'Summer Night City', had over 350,000 Advance Orders in the UK - and was Awarded a Silver Disk on the Day of Release. In the 1970's a Single went Silver on 250,000 Sales - not 300,000. A Gold Single had to reach 500,000, & Platinum was 1 Million. (Now it is 200,000 for Silver, 400,000 for Gold, & 600,000 for Platinum).
The only 2 ABBA Singles - that reached the UK Top 5 - to have NO BPI Sales Awards, are 'Waterloo', & 'The Winner Takes It All' - both No.1 Hits. 'Waterloo' should have a Silver Disk - well over 300,000 sold - and 'The Winner Takes It All' should have a Gold Disk - 565,000 sold. In both cases, Epic Records never got around to applying to the BPI, for those Sales Awards. (On the BPI Site, it says that 'Waterloo' has a Silver Disk, but that is for the 'Waterloo' ALBUM - an Album had to sell 60,000 or more to go Silver, & that 1974 ABBA Album sold 70,000).
'The Album' did not sell 2 Million in the UK - it was more like 1,100,000. The 2 Million claim was made by Epic Records, in the early 1980's. 'The Album' was NOT in the, All Time Top 100 Best Selling UK Albums List, last November - as compiled by The OCC. (You had to sell 1,680,651 copies of an Album, just to be at No.100 in the List).
ABBA only had 2 Albums in the Top 100:,
'Gold' at No.5 - Over 3,900,000 sold 'Greatest Hits' at No.27 - 2,598,576 sold
I saw Positions 101 to 110, too, & only 1 ABBA Album was there - 'Arrival' - at No.104, with 1,653,225 Sales.
Had, 'The Album', really sold 2 Million in the UK,it would have been well inside the UK's Top 100 Best Sellers, last November.
Likewise, 'Greatest Hits Vol.2' did not sell 1,900,000 in the UK - that too would have been well inside last Year's All Time UK Best Sellers, had it really sold so many. It really sold about 1,200,000 in the UK.
Nor did the, 'Super Trouper', Album sell 2 Million in the UK - it is more like 1,150,000. Epic Records exaggerated a lot of ABBA's UK Album Sales.
Polydor/Universal, have failed to claim UK Sales Awards, (off the BPI), for several ABBA Albums.
A Budget Album has to sell 200,000 to go Gold, & an ordinary Priced Album has to sell 60,000 for Silver, 100,000 for Gold, & 300,000 for Platinum.
Here are the UK ABBA Albums that SHOULD have Sales Awards, but don't - because Polydor/Universal, did not apply for them:,
'The Music Still Goes On' - over 230,000 sold - Gold 'The Definitive Collection' - over 160,000 sold - Gold '18 Hits' - over 88,000 sold - Silver - and WILL be Gold*** 'Number Ones' - 145,000 sold - Gold
***'18 Hits' is NOT a Budget (Low Priced), CD. It is allowed into the MAIN UK Album Chart, & was a No.46 Hit, earlier in 2007. It has spent 21 Weeks in the UK Top 200 - so far. (The UK Album Chart is really a Top 200, but, 'Music Week' only publishes the Top 75, & The OCC Site only shows the Top 100).
NOTE - 'The Name Of The Game' Budget CD, has sold over 195,000, so far, & WILL reach the 200,000 needed to go Gold - before too long.
Both, 'The Music Still Goes On', & 'The Name Of The Game', are only allowed into the UK Budget Chart. 'The Music Still Goes On', was a No.1 Budget CD, & 'The Name Of The Game', was a No.2 Budget CD.
'Gold' - so far, in 2007, it has sold about 52,000 in the UK - enough to make it the FOURTH All Time UK Best Seller - it was 5th in the All Time Top 100, last November.
It has been in the UK Top 200 for about 674 Weeks, & it had its 353rd Top 75 Week, a few Weeks ago - No.64. It was at No.162, for the Week Ending 20th October, & has jumped to No.78, for the Week Ending 27th October.

MORE ON 'GOLD' IN THE USA ALBUM CHARTS
I have checked on its Positions & Weeks in the USA Charts.
1) It entered the Top 200 (Main) USA Album Chart at No.63 on Week Ending 9th October 1993 - in the USA it was released a Year later than it was in most Countries. 2) After 104 Weeks in the Top 200 it was transferred to the Pop Catalogue Chart, in December 1996. (In the Top 200 it spent 17 Weeks in the Top 100, & its other 87 Weeks were between No.101 & No. 198. One source has it re-entering - for 1 Week - on 22nd May 2004 - at No.189 - its 105th Top 200 Week. I do not know how this can be, when it had been disqualified from the Top 200 in late 1996).
3) On week Ending 7th December 1996 it entered the Pop Catalogue Chart - at No.31. In 2001 it entered the Top 10 in that Chart, & did this - 10 - 9. In 2003, it entered the Top 10 again, & did this - 10 - 7 - 8. There was a 5 Week gap between it being at No.10 in 2003, & it re-entering the Top 10, at No.7.
4) By W/E 21st October 2006 'Gold' had spent 336 Weeks in the USA Pop Catalogue Chart.
5 Weeks - in the Top 10 58 Weeks - in the Top 20 260 Weeks - in the Top 40
5) Add the 336 Pop Catalogue Weeks, to its 104 Top 200 Weeks, & 'Gold' had spent 440 Weeks on the USA Album Charts by 21st October 2006. (I am not sure if it has Charted in the Pop Catalogue Chart since then - it is almost a Year now).

1) In the USA Top 200 Albums Chart, once an Album has been in the Chart for 104 Weeks - 2 Years - its is DISQUALIFIED from the Top 200 if it drops below a certain, (low), Position. I forget which Position it is, but 'Gold' dropped below it. It was not allowed into the Chart again.
2) Instead, it was moved into the USA Pop Catalogue Album Chart, & it has spent many 100's of Weeks in it, Peaking at No.7, in 2003. That is how it has managed to sell over 6 Million in the USA without getting higher than No.63 in the Top 200 - it has been a consistent Seller.
3) The claims of 6 Million USA Sales for it have nothing to do with Universal - they have been verified by the Record Industry Association Of America - RIAA - who have Awarded the ABBA Album 6 Platinum Disks - for 6 Million Sales. Soundscan, who add up, (by Bar Codes), every USA CD Sale in MOST USA Stores, have it on less than 4.5 Million Sales.
This is because Soundscan do not add in Sales from some USA Chain Stores. Nor do they add in Sales from Mail Order USA Music Clubs - and 'Gold' had sold 884,000 in the BMG Music Club alone, by 2002 - and it has been selling for 5 Years since then. Indeed, 'Gold' must be well on the way to 7 Million USA Sales, by now, as it got its 6th Platinum Disk, way back in 2002 - 25th June 2002.
4) EUROVISION - ABBA did NOT enter The ESC twice. In 1973 they entered the Swedish version of, 'A Song For Europe'. Several Swedish Acts performed Songs that they hoped would be chosen for the 1973 ESC. 'Ring Ring' was the Song that Swedish TV Viewers wanted to enter Eurovision, but - unfortunately - the final choice was made by a Panel of Judges. They decided that the ABBA Song was only the 3rd best Song, & it was unable to enter the Contest. Swedish TV Viewers were so angry that in 1974, the choice was made by TV Viewers, & they chose 'Waterloo'.
5) In Australia, ABBA were actually losing popularity, just as they arrived there for their early 1977 Tour. 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' only reached Number 9, at the time. Then, it turned out that 'Arrival' was their final Number 1 Album there - until 1992 - 'Gold'. After, 'Arrival', no ABBA Studio Album got higher than No.4 in the Australian Album Chart. By 1981, 'The Visitors' could only get to No.22 there..... After, 'Money, Money, Money' became their 6th Australian No.1 Single, ABBA never again even had a Top 3 Hit in Australia. Their highest Charting Hit, after 1976, was 'Chiquitita' - No.4 in 1979.

'Fernando' spent 3 Weeks at No.2, before reaching No.1, not 4 Weeks. Its UK Top 10 Positions were:,
4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 4
It was ABBA's only Single to spend 10 Weeks in the Top 10, but it was outsold by, 'Dancing Queen', & 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', which both spent 9 Weeks in the Top 10.
Benny & Bjorn's only other 10 Week UK Top 10 Hit, was, 'I Know Him So Well', by Barbara Dickson, & Elaine Paige, in 1985. It outsold every ABBA Single in the UK, except, 'Dancing Queen'.
Its Top 10 Positions were:,
6 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 8 - 10

I would have bought 16 Singles in that Top 20.
These days, I struggle to see a Single in the entire Top 40 that I want to buy. Yet, many people say that the Charts of the 1974 & 1975 period were rubbish! God knows what that makes 2007's Charts, then!
