4th place finish is a great result for GB, was looking like 6th to me for quite a while.
Gobsmacked at Jason Kenny's Gold in the Keirin, where on earth did that come from compared to his earlier performances?
Laura Kenny unlucky - brought down through no fault of her own in the preliminary race got no points and yet still finished 6th.
SPOTY is going to be a minefield - I wonder how many nominees they'll have?
Already I can see a large number of recriminations about who is left off the list.
I have a favourite at the minute as to who I would vote for but who knows what yet could happen in the next few months?

It was her early exit in the elimination race that really did the damage. Jason Kenny's win was as much down to outsmarting his opponents as it was a sudden increase in speed. It'll be interesting to see if he carries on for 2024. Laura has already confirmed she's going to carry on.

Didn't know that they had awarded points to those who crashed in the preliminary.
Certainly shock tactics but the commentators were almost in disbelief that he was able to maintain his lead to the finish.

They were all awarded points equivalent to 13th place, which was one position after the last rider to finish.

What a fantastic Olympics that was.
A near constant stream of excitement and success, ending with Jason Kenny's breathtaking opportunism.
I've really loved the new action sports - BMX, skateboarding and climbing. And they're such accessible sports, as demonstrated by the backgrounds of our entrants.
Thank goodness the organisers bucked public opinion polls in Japan and went ahead with the games anyway. To think that all of those tremendous competitors of all nationalities might never have had the opportunity to test themselves...
Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. I've already submitted my top tier ticket requests into the public ballot. Once I know which events I've been lucky with, I'll be able to fill the gaps with sports I'm less enthusiastic about. Having been to the London Olympics, and the Manchester and Glasgow Commonwealth Games, I know being there becomes addictive, thanks to the vibrant and friendly atmosphere.

A huge round of applause to Panda for his fascinating curation of this thread, with its excellent daily updates, statistics, forecasts and comments. You've greatly enhanced my enjoyment of these Olympics as a result. Thank you very much. Thank you sir. It's been great fun to do - the Olympics is my favourite sporting event, even ahead of the World Cup. Japan did a fantastic job of hosting in difficult circumstances. Will round things up after I've finished work.

All those who crashed in the opening race of the omnium were awarded points. It was her early exit in the elimination race that really did the damage. Jason Kenny's win was as much down to outsmarting his opponents as it was a sudden increase in speed. It'll be interesting to see if he carries on for 2024. Laura has already confirmed she's going to carry on. For an endurance multi-track event, I preferred the omnium event to be the 6 events over 2 days rather than the 4 events in 1 day. Other than the elimination race, I thought the other events were quite similar.
Other than outsmarting his opponents, I think his opponents wrote Jason Kenny off too after his performances in the sprint events this week. Personally if he does continue I think he should focus on 1 event - possibly Keirin? - see how he performs in Worlds and Commonwealth before deciding if 2024 is worth it.
I've said it before on this thread but despite the restricted broadcast permissions, the coverage on BBC has been good and you barely noticed in most of the events they were commentating in the studio in Salford from the same pictures we were seeing.
I was skeptical before the games started, whether the no crowds / fans situation would affect my enjoyment of these Olympics. Not hearing the big cheers from the crowd when someone wins a medal or enjoying their lap of honour of the stadium. It was noticeable in the hockey / football matches on how quiet the atmosphere was. However under the circumstances, it has been a fantastic Olympics and Tokyo should be proud.
I hope they can get another chance of hosting another summer Olympics (hopefully within my lifetime!) to fully show what they're capable of as a host city.
Roll on Paris 2024!

Odds for SPOTY: (will definitely be revisiting this after the Olympics) 5/1 Dina Asher-Smith 11/2 Mark Cavendish 14/1 Laura Kenny 16/1 Alun Wyn Jones 18/1 Adam Peaty 20/1 Lewis Hamilton 20/1 Harry Kane 20/1 Raheem Sterling 28/1 Katarina Johnson-Thompson 33/1 Anthony Joshua 33/1 Duncan Scott 33/1 Jason Kenny 40/1 Ben Stokes 50/1 Sky Brown 50/1 Bianca Walkden 50/1 Laura Muir 50/1 Max Whitlock 66/1 Jade Jones 66/1 Helen Glover 80/1 Tom Daley 100/1 Jemma Reekie Peaty looks great value at 18/1 though he'll be shorter with most bookies. Jade Jones' odds will tumble if she wins gold on Sunday. Laura Muir at 50/1 is tempting as well. Updated SPOTY odds: 11/4 Tom Daley 3/1 Jason Kenny 9/1 Adam Peaty 12/1 Laura Kenny (one bookie has her as 2/1 co-favourite with Tom Daley and Jason Kenny) 12/1 Mark Cavendish 16/1 Lewis Hamilton 20/1 Max Whitlock 50/1 Duncan Scott 50/1 Raheem Sterling 66/1 Jimmy Anderson 66/1 Charlotte Dujardin

Interesting odds there Tom Daley from 80/1 to 11/4! - I can't see that Mark Cavendish would have much chance also surprised that Gareth Southgate isn't listed. Thanks to Panda for all the information supplied throughout the fortnight - it was quite often easier to find information here than I could from my newspaper.

And here's what Tom knitted while he was watching his team mates in the diving. That's got to be worth some sort of prize.

GB's sprint relay silver medal is under threat after CJ Ujah was suspended for a positive drug test: British sprinter CJ Ujah has been suspended from competition after testing positive for a banned substance. Ujah, 27, was part of Team GB men's 4x100m relay team which won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this month. He has been provisionally suspended, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said. The AIU said a test showed the "presence/use of a prohibited substance (Ostarine and S-23)." A UK Athletics spokesperson said the governing body does not comment on ongoing processes. Ujah, who has yet to comment, won the 100m at the British Championships in June. Britain's men's quartet missed out on the 4x100m title by just a hundredth of a second in Tokyo. Ujah ran the opening leg as anchor runner Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was overhauled on the line by Italy's Filippo Tortu. World Athletics Anti-Doping rules state that in instances where an athlete who has committed an ADRV competed as a member of a relay team, "the relay team shall be automatically disqualified from the event in question, with all resulting consequences for the relay team, including the forfeiture of all titles, awards, medals, points and prize and appearance money". Enobosarm, or Ostarine, is listed as an anabolic agent - banned at all times - in the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances. The UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) website said it has "similar effects to testosterone". S23 is a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (Sarm), which, according to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) "have similar anabolic properties to anabolic steroids". Ujah can request analysis of the B-sample - kept for storage while the A-sample is analysed - and should that confirm the Adverse Analytical Finding [AAF], the case will be referred to the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport [Cas ADD]. In turn, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said: "The Cas ADD will consider the matter of the finding of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation [ADRV] and the disqualification of the men's 4 x 100 relay results of the British team". Three other athletes have been suspended after tests carried out during the Tokyo Olympics. They are Bahrain's 1500m runner Sadik Mikhou, shot putter Benik Abramyan of Georgia and Kenyan sprinter Mark Otieno Odhiambo. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/58193101

Only heard this this morning - so diappointed for British Athletics especially the other relay runners - it taints the whole team.
I suppose I'm glad now they didn't win the Gold - it does look odds on as if they will be stripped of the medal.
I can only see this heading one way.
TBH I was personally rather sceptical about the performance of the Italian guy who won the 100m Gold from "nowhere".
