*drumroll* iiiiit's... the TOP FIFTY! ;D (well, the first bit of it. ) what follows is a list of the fifty best songs ever recorded, as i believe them to be. but they're all so fantastic that they could have been in almost ANY order. this was haaaard 41 moonshine - feeder would you come back to me? would you shine out for me?42 scattered black and whites - elbow i come back here from time to time... i shelter here somedays43 bittersweet symphony - the verve try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die44 run - snow patrol even if you cannot hear my voice, i'll be right beside you, dear45 losing my religion - rem i think i thought i saw you try, but that was just a dream46 fell in love with a girl - the white stripes the two sides of my brain need to have a meeting47 idioteque - radiohead we're not scaremongering, this is really happening48 sit down - james if i hadn't seen such riches, i could live with being poor49 the small print - muse i'm the priest god never paid50 tell me ten words - idlewild so i keep lying to be honest, but it's not a real defeata fairly varied group, this... from the gorgeously evocative piano of scattered black and whites (formerly a top 30 entry ) to the likes of muse and the white stripes. interestingly, four of these songs (including the best two) are album tracks, though album tracks tend to do pretty well in my chart the idlewild album track scraping into the top 50 has also done much better in the past an rem song i've inherited a love for from my dad, my 101 of last year, firmly establishes its place as my favourite ;D snow patrol close off the list of supreme 2004 songs with one of the few songs that moves me to tears almost every time i listen to it elsewhere, radiohead fall a little, the verve rise a lot, and feeder just about defeats elbow in the battle of the closers oh... and remember when i said there was only one james track left? i'd forgotten about one of them so there's still one more to go... with luck, more to come tomorrow!

moving down to groups of five as we approach the summit... 26 don't mix your drinks - elbow i'm coming cap in hand, begging you to listen something draws me in, and i just can't christen itanother former top 10 entry slips down to just outside the top 25 certainly not what everyone would describe as one of elbow's best songs, but i love its sombre, almost chilling mood... 27 born slippy - underworld SHOUTING LAGER LAGER LAGER LAGERa recently unearthed gem, this is a totally new entry addictively bizarre and haunting at the same time, it is truly worthy of its accolade as the best dance song ever. 28 three of clubs - hell is for heroes open doors that i can walk through, give me eyes that i can see through give me skin so i can touch you, give me space so i can break throughi'm not usually a big fan of this genre of loud, metalesque emo-rock... at least, i wasn't until i discovered hifh the masterful way they change pace and intensity, coupled with excellent lyrics and more than a spark of originality, takes their best effort to 28. 29 57 - biffy clyro and i'll try not to feel this music's for youa relatively new addition to my collection, biffy have nevertheless racked up quite a few hits here. their second-best song and one of the first i heard has shot up to the top 30, in all its brilliant ODDNESS ;D 30 pride (in the name of love) - u2 free at last, they took your life they could not take your pridedespite having taken a slight fall, this clings onto the top 30... another enduring legacy of my childhood u2 are known for their powerful, politically-flavoured anthems, of which this is undoubtedly the best.

21 black star - radiohead i keep falling over i keep passing out when i see a face like youwhat was once my favourite radiohead song falls from second to third... yet, mysteriously, still manages a small rise the fade-in, the crashing guitars and, best of all, the ending... oooh aaaaaaaaah, this is killing me... *sigh* 22 showbiz - muse they make me... make me dream your dreams they make me... make me scream your screamsmuse's second-best song sees them experimenting with slow-building agony and downright creepiness. i can't think of another song that radiates so much pure anger... ;D 23 she bangs the drums - the stone roses how could it ever come to pass? she'll be the first, she'll be the last to describe the way i feelironic that a song as happy as this should find its way into a top 30 full of pretty gloomy music it's also risen a lot, having overtaken i wanna be adored. yay for jangly happy vintage rock! ;D 24 burn baby burn - ash look into my tired eyes, see someone you don't recognisehooray for ash! this song has risen MASSIVELY... and very deserving of its new place it is, too absolutely brilliant guitar music. 25 paranoid android - radiohead ambition makes you look pretty ugly kicking screaming gucci little piggy YOU don't remember, you don't remember, why don't you remember my name? OFF WITH HIS HEAD MAN OFF WITH HIS HEAD MANnuff said. ;D
